What's astonishing was as she slowly lost her battle to Anorexia and her body literally withered before our very eyes, that magnificent voice remained fully intact.

What is interesting is that it is commonly asserted that despite Karen Carpenter's severe anorexia nervosa/bulimia condition that her voice never was adversely affected. I disagree. When you listen to the last song she ever recorded - the beautiful song "Now" - although she sings a significant portion of that song in her upper register (i.e., her head voice), you can definitely hear in her voice that the wonderful extra richness that she once possessed in her voice is missing! There is just that extra something unique and special that is sadly not there in that recording even though overall the song sounds very good.

I somewhat agree though Karen, in her worst of days, still sounded magnificent and unequaled.
As a life long fan, in her recordings, I did notice a "pulling back" in her delivery around 1976 (after her collapse ). The major issue it seemed was her stamina. The wear and tear of touring and recording did take a toll even when she was at her healthiest.
The extreme complications from Anorexia undoubtedly was a ticking bomb that proved too formidable.@@michaelbarlow6610

I think there was a noticeable difference as she got sicker especially in thei song Now. Her lows not as strong and when she sings near the "and i never really knew how".......her voice was reed thin and she sounded a bit like Connie Francis. Her strengths were always in her regular alto voice, "the money is in the basement.": Her phrasing, her diction, her breathe control was unrivalled but in her later years she just didnt sound the same with her illness.

@@brenthancock7118 I know what you mean about not utilizing her 'basement" voice as much.
After showcasing the fullest glory of her vocals in "Horizon", I noticed a difference in a "A kind of Hush" album. A "brighter" tone to her voice - less reliant on the deep forceful melancholy and fullness of those low notes in earlier recordings. This, I attributed to her calculated refinement of her vocal technique . By "Passage" the typical "boom" in those low notes where no longer that forceful.
Arguably, her physical decline and weight loss happening then contributed to the "thinning" of the Karen sound. The best indication I can think of is the TV special Music Music Music's Act 3 Medley. where sher famous Alto still sounded magnificent but less "booming".

One day my friend across the street brought over this new cassette titled " Close to You", knowing, as a musician, I would appreciate the sound. I kept it for about two weeks until she sweetly asked me, "can I have my cassette back?" Karen and Richard's gifts amazed me Then and Now..

That interview was so painful--the denial in her eyes, Richard's fake smile. I can understand why it was never aired. It's just such a shame that it didn't stop Karen in her tracks. I went through the same denial when I was 19. I was 5'1" and dropped from 160lbs to 92lbs in a years' time. I didn't believe my family and friends when they told me enough! I was so happy to be skinny I thought I looked great. I finally saw the truth when I was shown a picture of me in a bikini. The sunken chest, every rib sticking out, my pointy hip bones. Four years later I was 120lbs the night Karen died. I sure wish I could've talked to her. 💔

Karen brought national attention to anorexia! Unfornately she will always be remembered for this disorder instead of her God given musical voice!

I disagree with you. Although Karen Carpenter💐💐 will be remembered for her anorexia, there's a lot of people out there including fans like us that love her music! You should check out Maggy Max's RUclips channel and she is young lady from Thailand and she loves Karen Carpenter's💐💐 beautiful singing 🎤 voice and her drumming🥁, as much as we do!!!! Maggy Max also talks about the history of popularity of their music!!! And Karen Carpenter 💐💐also like to collect teddy bears 🧸🐻just like I do and she also collected Mickey mouse plush❤️💛🖤!! Also, there was a Vietnam vet that wrote to Karen Carpenter when he was in Vietnam and she actually wrote him back!!!! Karen Carpenter💐💐 was very down-to-earth despite being very talented and a star!! Also Karen Carpenter💐💐 had a really good sense of humor😁😁 too! In one RUclips video other than Maggy Max's video, Karen Carpenter said in an interview on that she wanted to appear in musicals too!!! So as you can read Karen Carpenter is going to be remembered for her talents, her interests, and for being kind down to earth! And yes, she will also be remembered for her anorexia, which has helped certain people get help that had the same condition.
