You should replace your front drive shaft with the double cardon one so you don't wear out your u-joints so fast. They came on certain models or you can get a custom one for more $. You can also put 1" spacers between the trans mount and the unibody to lower the angle. My WJ has both of these. Also, you were likely joking, but your rear window struts are worn out and you can get a complete set for the window, hatch and hood from the jungle site for about $20.
Firstly I want to mention you got a great taste in music, I had to shazam it lol. For me your video of the carefree type energy while being outside, at peace with nothing but mother nature! Thanks for that Bern.
These WJs are in a class of their own. I've gone offroad ( mainly sand, deep powder sand and mud) with new Toyota Landcruisers, Isuzu Max, Hi-Lux and that Toyota with the rear doors that open weird... FJ I think. My 2002 Quadtrac2 I didn't need to let the tyres down but went a lot better when I did and had to pull the others out. It's a beast. Get one. Must admit, mine has a few mods. Lifted 2.5mm, all terrains as they don't need muds, upgraded balljoints, prop sharft etc. But it's the V8 engine and the mechanical quadtrac 2 that wins. It's amazing. Wish they had them at work instead of Toyota rubbish. I've been bogged in new HI-lux a few times and wished the jeep was there to help the day. Don't make them as they use too.
Bought my ‘04 WJ Laredo with 129k on it. It’s been my hauling, hunting and banging around ride for over 5 years now. Put a RC 2 inch BB on it with some 31s, rebuilt the front steering, along with the brakes. It’s run like a champ until a couple weeks ago. With almost 191k on it the transmission has gone out, specifically 3rd and 4th gear are MIA. 4 grand to pull the tranny out, rebuild it and put it back in. Luckily there’s a couple of WJs on marketplace with mileage in the 100,000 range for less than 5 grand. So, stop telling folks how nice and capable they are, you’re gonna drive the prices up! Good video!
I have an 04 that had the tranny go out around 210k. I got a remanufactured one for $1,500 online and paid a local shop $700 to swap them out. Got out for less than $2,500. I have the 4.0 i6 so here's to another 210k lol.
Very good commentary. I own a 2001 grand. 174,000 doesn't burn a drop of oil. I installed a 3" lift w/ Core 4×4 adjustable control arms with differential llift block for the "boomerang" upper spacer. 2007 JK aluminum 17" wheels w/Copper AT/3 tires. It's unstoppable. New front drive shaft & front hub bearing assembly. Until you do the work and appreciate the rewards your comments are appreciated.
I rarely floor the accelerator pedal of my 2004 WJ Overland with the High Output 4.7V8 powerplant that I recently snagged in a partial trade, The acceleration is fearsome and sudden, but this sure-footed beast also acquits itself admirably in deep mud or loose gravel while offering superb all-wheel-traction when driving along rain-slicked road surfaces, thanks to Quadra Drive2 in both trucks. Both my '04 WJ Overland and '04 WJ 4.7V8 Laredo ride on factory stock suspension with no lifts beyond the factory one-inch suspension lift on the Overland. Even if cost were no object, I would choose to drive a WJ as my primary means of transportation out here in the boonies where most roads are dirt roads.
The WJ is a great platform with many advantages over other 2000s 4x4s when stock. V8, solid axles, interior space, light weight, etc. If you're looking to buy one, find one with the high output V8 and selec-trac 242HD transfer case.
I have bought my 3rd Jeep and it's a 2001 WJ Will see where it takes me but first ironing some repairs and cleaning. New wheels and tires. Shocks and a tranny service. Around Bend Oregon out!
Nice video. The factory method for shifting into 4 low is to have it rolling at 2-3 mph in neutral when you shift the transfer case. If you shift it standing still, sometimes it doesn't catch.
Regardless any speed under 45mph maximum 35-45 mph letting off the gas and immediately thrusting the selector lever into neutral, shifting from drive to N then shifting to low range then back to drive also works on the fly. Please remember to ensure you're off the gas during this move.
Had a WJ in 2016 I bought cheap from a friend. Super clean but didn't have 4WD so I drove it for a little then sold it. Always liked them and snagged another one a couple months ago for $500 and working 4WD (selec trac) because of a "bad transmission" however I just had to change the trans solenoids and it's good to go!
I found your video as I was looking for WJ info. I subscribed because you do such a great job going through the features of vehicles. Looks like you’re in the DMV area.
To sleep in the back, you take out the bottom of the rear seat and then put a storage tub in the foot well and move the front seat forward a little. That' will get you a full 6 foot.
To be fair, this isnt the finest modded WJ. Nothing of the sort, however it is still quite capable. You are supposed to upgrade the front DS when you do a 4in lift kit, otherwise it will, as shown, cause it to fail prematurely. Also if you are going for 4in, do the gas tank tuck. Its not that difficult and makes the vehicle far more capable.
Good comprehensive review. Agreed, it's a Chrysler and not a Toyota, so longevity is likely not the same.... BUT it depends in large part how it was cared for in both cases. I do wish you were a little more daring on going through the mud and not around some of the holes. This suggests maybe it could not have handled it, which i know is not correct especially with the larger tires. Oh, one side note, the largest tire that fits in the spare well is 245-70-17 and 'just barely' when new. With a little wear on it then the fit is fine! Kudos.
That's why jeep beat Toyota ass in ww2 , God didn't support Japan in ww2 it was a punishment, you put Americans out of work buying Toyota crap that killed Americans

Hey, I can relate. My '01 that I coil lifted, "not spacer block" will go anywhere I chose. The last of solid axle GRAND CHEROKEE.

Love this video, I have one WJ, two JKs, had two XJs. Keep this great content coming because I'm also an older, simpler truck guy.

Back when Jeep had soul awesome video
Thank you!!
Great video. Love those WJs. Very informative video. And a very nice example of an off-road modded WJ.
Thank you sir! Glad you enjoyed!
This is perfect! I would say the WJ could be a capable off roader than the XC90.
While your statement is correct, don't forget that in the same time what you stated it's an "apple to orange's" comparison ;)
Definitely more capable because of it’s solid axles and dual range transfer case!
I love this review and the subsequent revisions. All revisions increased the utility and may I say enjoyment of the content.
Thank you!
What an amazing review and channel! Well done, mate!

@@jamesdewer Good luck with that. You're not supposed to exceed 25 in low range. You'll blow the engine up in short order at 45.

Si!!!
Great video Bernard. Looks like a cool place to run off road.
Thank you! Certainly is!
I just use vice grips to hold the rear window open
Got an 01 4.0 with 226k miles still going strong. 💪🏾
I picked up a unicorn the other day. An 02 overland WITH select-trac. I couldn't believe it.
Good find!!
@@BernonCars 4.7HO with select-trac. Needed some work, tune up basically. I've had 9 Grand Cherokee and this is the last lol.
Excellent video.
Thank you sir
Just got an '04 laredo with the 4.0 engine and selec Trac 😊 I can't wait to give it some upgrades and go off road. She's at 213k, and ready for more

Ahhhh you're right thank you for the correction!
I had to re-upload! I hope you guys liked the maiden voyage with the WJ!
For my off-roaders, what do you drive?
'02 GC Overland and same color as this one. 8-)
Mine now has 240k miles.
Nice video and wj! Those tires are the perfect size for a wj. Do they ever rub? What kind of lift do you have?
Thank you! They do rub a bit on full lock. Its a Rough Country lift
nice video. thanks for the info
Glad it was helpful!
that is not the high out engine. the HO 4.7 was only available from 2002-2004.
какой размер шин?
I agree w you, if you’re going off road something older is just fine. It’s gonna get dinged anyway
Absolutely!
I'm 5'9 and we just move the seats forward a bit and you have plenty of room to sleep. I've done it many times in my wj
Good to know!
I'm 5'11 and live out of mine full time. I think it's cozy to sleep in. just wish I could open the hatch from the inside
I own a JL and a WJ, but why do I continuously go back to the WJ? 😅
They’re just that good! Classic Jeep
mannn. you have no idea how shitty the 99-01 grand Cherokees are compared to the 02-04. interior , motor , exterior wise. HUGE difference.

Toyota didn't have longevity in ww2 when jeep beat its ass, Toyota killed alot of Americans would never own one buy and support American made
