    It has been 60 years since I practiced Okinawan karate and when I saw those forearm blocks it immediately made me cringe from the pain. Don't ever get in a fight with an Okinawan karate-ka. Their forearms are like steel pipes. Did you notice how such forearm strikes cause your opponent to flinch and turn away? That's called creating an opening. The next strike would have been a lethal kick somewhere on your body. At 79, I'm trying to revive my old body and have been practicing again. Oh my poor old hip joints and unused muscles have been screaming at me but I'm starting to see some progress. This video has helped renew my enthusiasm to be what I once was. Although I wasn't on the level of these fellows in this video.

    Es impresionante ver a un maestro que aprende de otro sin ningún problema adombrandose y no poniendo su estilo sobre el otro sino tomando el conocimiento y adaptándolo a su propia tecnica, un verdadero Budoka sin palabras Oss

    I trained Shotokan but have always admired Higaonna Sensei of Goju Ryu, I think we Shotokan students can learn a lot from Okinawan Karate, very powerful. Maybe both styles can combine and use the strengths of both styles...Oss!...

      As a Shotokan guy myself, I agree. At the very least use Goju Ryu’s defensive techniques and combine them with Shotokan’s offensive techniques. All styles should just be called Karate (before I got into it, I thought the styles were just Okinawan and Japanese lol).

I know the guy is "humble" and a major name in Shotokan, every karateca should be "humble" enough to learn and adapt new techniques into his style, without assuming a "i know it all" attitude. My comment was "sarcastic", look it up, maybe you will learn something out of this.

      Hi gomergilligan I tried looking for this on google but most of what I found say that Tohei actually would handle multiple judoka with ease. It did mention that he said he would lose a lot against bigger judoka when he was doing judo, but that all changed after devoting himself to aikido. Do you have a link to what you were talking about?

    Karate as i understand its meaning is "empty hand", you fight with your bare hand and feet without holding any weapon like ,knife, sword, stick and the like. You use only your bare hand and feet as your weapon thus the development of some karate technique to simulate some weapon with their bare hand like the brass knuckle and spear. They simulate the brass knuckle by extending the middle knuckle or the forefinger middle knuckle to protrude; and the spear by simulating it with the spearhand where the fingers form together a spear-like thrust. In training this simulated weapon they hardened their knuckles and fingers through hard work of repeatedly hitting them on a makiwara or other devices purposely for that training.

    • @josef-peterroemer5309
      @josef-peterroemer5309 Год назад

      The empty hand replaced original of Chinese hand so that it would be acceptable to teach in Japan. Since Japanese do not like anything Chinese. Karate has always included weapons. Hands only is last resort.

      Karl Panzinger The more you train, the more your belt degrades. In essence, you start off as a white belt. Eventually you'll promote to black and through training it returns back to it's original state. Back to white...from the beginning. A full circle.

  • @akirakanda7972

    Karate was never meant to be used for show or sports. It is a deadliest form of combat art which was meant to be used against Japanese swards. No rule, no responsibility for the final outcome. So, it never was to fight against the sport martial art. Almost all deadliest Karate attacks are banned in the existing sport martial art. The whole essence of this form of combat art is to kill by one impact as against Japanese sward, Karate man has only one chance. Karate is never a kick boxing. The practitioners were ready to give up their life. Either you die or your opponent dies.
    As this is not acceptable in modern world, Karate should not drift into the "full contact" sports martial art. There is no real martial art in sports combat art.
    Karate should detach itself from these fake martial art. Oyama sensei tired to find a middle ground and I do not think in the end he found anything acceptable. Funakoshi sensei declared that Jiyu Kumite [under rules] is against the spirit of Karate. In modern days, what should Karate be is a serious question to ask. But one thing, we must not become a part of the sports show martial art which is absolutely fake.

    • @KaizenDojo
      @KaizenDojo 7 лет назад +10

      Well that is an interesting premise, but I think the whole " meant to be used against Japanese swords" thing has been debunked a long time ago. Not sure what style of Karate you practice, but you may wish to take a trip to Okinawa to educate yourself.

    • @akirakanda7972
      @akirakanda7972 7 лет назад +1

      Oh so, then let me know how and for what purpose Okinawan Karate was developed. As far as I can see, short maai karate of Gojuryu for example is so only to make the swordsman difficult to swing swards against you. Of course, Japanese government does not like this history of Okinawan Karate as it reminds people the colonization of Okinawa by Satsuma. When Okinawan Karate was developed combining Chinese Kung Fu and Japanese Kempoo, there was no such thing as sports karate.
      This tradition was passed to Kyokushin Karate in Japan. Have you seen Shinken ShirahaDori?

    • @KaizenDojo
      @KaizenDojo 7 лет назад

      Yeh, no. Kyokushinkai is NOT the descendant of Okinawan karate. But, you know, nice try. You seem to have all the answers. Perhaps you need to make your own videos. Show the world what true karate looks like...

    • @akirakanda7972
      @akirakanda7972 7 лет назад +7

      Kyokushin is a combination of many different styles of Karate. Oyama sensei came from Shyotokan. But he leaned a lot from Gojyuru.
      Even Shytokan was full contact no rule to begin with. As too many serious injuries took place, they banned full contact.
      About 15 years ago, a UFC Champ had to defend himself in a fight where there was no rule. Yes the attacker had a knife. He in the subdued the attacker and gave him to the NPD. But all of this was only after he was seriously injured by many cuts and stub wounds. There is a famous video recording of a Kyokushin teacher in US handling many street gangs in USA. Some of the attackers had knifes. He handled all of them well and passed them to the police. It was long time ago. So, I do not know what is now with Kyokushin. In karate we have Shinken Shiraha Dori, a skill to take Japanese sward way with bear hands. Can MMA champions do this?
      The reality is that most of Karate's deadly attacks are banned in MMA to avoid death or serious injury. So, it is a competition on who can hit harder. In karate we do not hit hard. We use Ki energy and hit fata pressure point to kill with one impact. It was to destroy internal organs.
      An alternative "solution" to this problem is modern Karate in which full contact is banned or most dangerous attacks are banned as in Kyokushin. Kyokushin karate was also grossly compromised to participate in MMA. It is best described as "kick boxing". Boxing is a sports to begin with. . If it is kick boxing, I would rather watch Sawamura. But, I have to say that it is sports not a martial art to kill or to be killed.
      in modern days, real martial art like Karate are not acceptable. But we want to preserve some part of it as culture. This is what modern karate is all about. Karate was never a business. MMA is a business, show.

    • @akirakanda7972
      @akirakanda7972 7 лет назад +1

      Well a good way to say it is that Kendo and Kenjutsu are different things. The former is a serious and deadly martial art. The latter is a sports. I bet that when they fight in Kendo rule, Kenjusts will loose. But when they fight without rule as in any Kenjutsu, there is absolutely no chance for Kendo.
