  • In today‘s video it‘s time to break down contrast. Contrast is such an essential part of photography, but it's often reduced to less than it actually is. Therefore here is my attempt to break down the topic and all the aspects I could think of.

Hey there, I hope you've had a good day - mine went alright, but not as planned. I completely underestimated the amount of work this video is going to need, so here it is a bit later than usual, I hope you enjoyed :D
Btw. I forgot to credit one of the photographs - the skier at 05:52 is by Kellen Mohr. I left all featured artists plus a link to them in the description in case you‘re interested :)
    See you next week!

Your discussion videos, that deliberate the philosophy of photography are amongst the best out there on RUclips.
Barbara Hepworth, on sculpture talks about ‘all my early memories are of form and shapes and textures...”.”I am the form and I am the hollow, the thrust and contour”. By capturing forms, shapes and textures (contrast) through the medium of photography, we capture the essence of our emotions. Visual and conceptual contrasts are our tools.
I recently produced a book (non commercial) of lockdown photographs, contrast as you describes it abounds. But, for me the emotions the photographs generate, from the contrast(whether it be visual or conceptual) is the end point. As you say, we need to use contrast to generate emotion, otherwise our photography is flat. The end point is not a pretty picture, but something that generates an emotion.

Ohh thank you so much, I'm happy you connect to the thoughts I'm sharing!🤗
Ohh what an interesting parallel you see to Hepworth, great! Yes, I agree. I love how contrast is such an effective tool to deepen a photograph👀

Love this - I especially enjoy your videos exploring the fundamentals of imagery like this. Whenever I think of contrast I just think of the contrast slider in Lightroom, you've helped expand my mind more to think of contrast as an essential element in picture taking. It's something I tune into subconsciously when I take a photo but now it'll be more conscious!

I think you make a great point opening up the idea of contrast for discussion! I really like how you at the same time explain what contrast is and what it does but also how open it's meaning really is

Many thanks for this breakdown. I am still very much in the beginning of the photography learning curve, after starting in a serious way about 1 year ago. Through your explanations and thoughtful considerations, I came to realise that I can try to reduce visual contrasts, in terms of colour, tone, texture, shape, form and sharpness etc., instead of *always* aim to maximise these types of contrasts. Also, the realisation of topical contrast, is very useful, in order create photographs that tell a more compelling story. In all, contrast as 'difference', in any kind, is a valuable one. I will try to apply that concept more, the next time I go out to photograph or edit photographs. Many thanks!

When I finished the video, I thought to myself that this was one of the best photography videos on RUclips. It was logical for me that you had at least a million subs, so I wanted to check out the channel. After seeing how many subs you had I couldn't believe my eyes lmaoo. This is just a sign that you are getting recognised for your work, and that there is a lot of success ahead of you 😁!

another really excellent video... everything makes sense... a couple of things your video helped me realize... generally, it seems that thinking about visual contrast works well on a shot to shot basis, but when contentual contrast kicks in when talking about image sets, larger bodies of work... also content contrast is important in the realm of street photography... so a tip to improve one's street shots is to think of content contrast (at least that's what i usually think of when looking at well-timed and/or cleverly taken street shots, I'm usually noticing the interplay of elements of the photo and not the just brightness, shapes or colors...

Very well done Teo, thanks for your effort and time and I totally agree with you on this topic of contrast. So good you think out of the box and formulate your own ideas about these kind of things. I think that contentual contrast is very important, cause there are lots of photographers who use this in their photography, especially when photographing real life series like 101 billionaires by Rob Hornstra. Greets from Holland, John!

Your video’s explanation of different ways to document contrast beyond color or tone is p important for making good images, so I appreciate how you approached this topic.
My only question: saturation contrast is what photographers call chroma, right? The color’s saturation is its chroma value, as far as I understand it.
