'We Won't Progress Without Fine-Tuning Our Multilateral Toolbox’: UNGA78 President | United Nations

- Reflecting on the work of the General Assembly, the President of its 78th session, Dennis Francis, said, “we will not progress at the pace or scale required without fine-tuning some of the tools within our multilateral toolbox,” and highlighted the role to be played by the upcoming Summit of the Future, “the pivotal event of 2024.”
Francis said world leaders expected to gather in New York in September for the Summit, are expected to “forge a new global consensus on how to better deliver for people and planet.”
Highlighting the Veto Initiative at the GA in 2023 in the face of Security Council deadlock, The PGA underscored “the critical importance of fostering accountability and ensuring robust cooperation between all UN Principal Organs to achieve UN system-wide coherence.”
He said there was “sufficient room to co-exist, and that by strengthening the role of each individual Organ, we can fortify and improve the United Nations system as a whole.”
On the challenges of climate and conflict, Francis said, “as we continue to fight human caused wars, our planet is ablaze with wildfires, scorched by increasingly high temperatures, submerged by rising seas, and parched by drought.”
These “cataclysmic” challenges, he added, “will not wait for us to settle our issues.”
He called for cooperation anchored on mutual respect, dialogue and diplomacy.
To conclude, GA President said, “we have enormous untapped capacity to effect transformational and impactful change - if we properly leverage our collective strength and the convening power of this august house, our General Assembly.”
He said it was “no exaggeration that realizing all that we have set ourselves to accomplish - for the benefit of “We the Peoples” - will benefit more from enhanced solidarity, unity, and robust international cooperation through a stronger multilateral system.”
The Summit of the Future will aim to enhance cooperation on critical challenges and address gaps in global governance, reaffirm existing commitments including to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations Charter, and move towards a reinvigorated multilateral system that is better positioned to positively impact people’s lives.
Building on the SDG Summit in 2023, Member States will consider ways to lay the foundations for more effective global cooperation that can deal with today’s challenges as well as new threats in the future.
