i did this exact process for a jason voorhees mannequin i did this past halloween. i would have never known about the foam if it weren't for your mask filling video! i did add some sticks in my limbs for added durability. i also just left the tape and everything on there.
I bought a mannequin off amazon for about that much, the only problem is that its way too skinny for most of my needs. This is great because i can even make them per actor if needed. Thanks again man, you're gonna get a special mention in the credits of my monster movie👍
Great video! Love that it's a durable build. Would love to see some follow-up tutorials of how to use the manikin to make costumes. Thanks for sharing. 🤘💀
Have you ever measured one of these and compared it to the original model? I'm curious to how it compares cause this could be a good method for dress form making as well!
I've done this, but found that the amount of foam it took was so expensive that I might as well have just bought a real one from Amazon. The expanding foam also tended to deform the packing tape outward. The second one I did, I just stuffed with crumpled up newspaper, and it was mostly fine, although it tended to bend and buckle under heavy clothing. If I had to do it again, I'd probably soak newspapers in a cement slurry and cover it in a sort of cement papier mache.
@@StiltbeastStudios No, I used Loctite, the same stuff you use for a lot of your props. I've never worked with fence post foam. I guess I should give it a try.
Is there a second half to this video? If so, can you post a link please If not, I would sure love to see how you make the arms and head be detachable and what materials are used. I really want to make a couple of these, to use as a life sized nativity scene. Too bad I can't get my cows to sit still while I use plastic wrap and packing tape to make their forms! LOL Many thanks for all your great videos!
I did not film that part, but here is how, get PVC pipe and a pvc connector sleeve for each joint you want to move I like 1" PVC. drill out a hole for the pipe on one side and the connector on the other. leave enough pipe stub to fit into the connector sleeve. Gorilla glue them in and they press fit together pretty good
You are legend! Could this be something that an armature/frame could be incorporated into? To maybe create something poseable (aside from the original model’s pose), or even have potential to serve as the form for an animated prop?
My bother made one of these but we filled the body with newspaper. It cost a whole lot less than filling it with foam. Although it was not as sturdy as yours.
Because then it would have a meter stick shape in the tape. Every now and then we will do one and someone has a cell phone in their pocket and in the finished shape form, you can clearly see the cell phone shape in their pocket!
@@StiltbeastStudios good to know!! thanks for the heads up!!! im working on one of these and gonna try an eva mannequin build as well. thank you for all you do
No, since canned foam uses air to cure and it won't get enough air inside. You really need an a/b foam like the fence post foam that cures from a chemical reaction.
Awesome video! Thanks so much for this! I remember the original and I would never had discovered that foam if it weren’t for your ‘how to foam fill masks’ video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and inspiration! 🤘🏻🎃🤘🏻
Cutting it open with the knife and the piece of wood is a bit dangerous, there exist special scissors that are made to cut open bandages which would by perfect for this kind of task ✂
I've been doing this for years. I put a pvc frame inside, the fill with plastic grocery bags and construction canned foam. My husband has suffered through the wrap process. I saw how some use medical scissors to prevent cutting person, but I like how you've done it with a wood stick.
Good ol' clear wrap. We 'abused' that in my old sculpture classes. A few students created clear wrap clones of themselves. I played with the stuff to make limbs for a robot that I made with cardboard boxes, blue glitter cardstock paper, and silver tape.
WOW! Thanks for sharing your expertise with us. I know it sure has helped make my haunted path a success. And Ill be using this technique make my newest addition to my path, I'm making PinHead from Hell Raiser! Or I'm going to try that is. LOL Wish me luck. If you have any ideas I could use for making Him please share it with me. Remember I have NO POWER out on my path so everything has to be battery operated..... THANKS SO MUCH AS ALWAYS Stay Safe!!!
Can you use a furniture type of foam to fill the majority of the cavity after you distribute the liquid foam around the outside perimeter of the form ? To save money and time ?
yeah, but the poses always suck with them, its really hard to make them not look like mannequins. These can have any pose the person can stay in for 30-40 minutes.
@StiltbeastStudios Hi, I'm in LA, and checking out homedepot website, I see the price tag. First $35. Then again I followed your video to make Loctite, foam heads, and I gotta tell you, thanks s to you, I'm working on 2 zombie head, following your detailed instructions and for that. I thank you my friend ! see not all is lost! Keep up the good work happy hunting!!
Man you got me worried there for a moment I was thinking he cut off his hair and he's not letting us freak flag fly anymore ha ha Thank god that was an old video ha ha ha Keep the freakies a flying, keep the monsters mashing and keep the creatures creeping sir👍👍👍👍
I wanted to see the finished figure? What happened? It's like a cliff hanger? Or like you're just getting to the reveal and your power goes off!! What happened???
yeah this figure has been used in the shop for five years now- the figure is shown at the end of the video, I just got to editing all the live videos together into a YTW to show the process.

Great! Keep making cool stuff!
How you add joints for swaping limps and head?
This is great. Sorry I didn't finish watching, I got the point and love the idea about the popsicle stick!
Lmao, look how clean those drawers are! And the shop is in general! Throwback Wednesday, I love it.
Right?! now it looks like I got robbed cause so much has left for DH

you can, but the poses are pretty terrible and they fall apart easy- I like this cause I can control the positioning.
If you want you can do this with your mannequin and change the body size and positioning
Lol

Great suggestion! will do!
@StiltbeastStudios thank you, sir. You rock!
Have you ever measured one of these and compared it to the original model? I'm curious to how it compares cause this could be a good method for dress form making as well!
If you want a mannequin for sewing, you might want to use saran rap and tape, plaster over the tape to make a shell
I've done this, but found that the amount of foam it took was so expensive that I might as well have just bought a real one from Amazon. The expanding foam also tended to deform the packing tape outward. did you use fence post filling foam? thats really cheap considering. the yield.
@@StiltbeastStudios No, I used Loctite, the same stuff you use for a lot of your props. I've never worked with fence post foam. I guess I should give it a try.
its MUCH cheaper for the yield and it cures chemically not with airflow so its much better suited for this purpose.
Thank you for this video! I’m currently creating an undead diver and now I’ll be able to make a great body on my budget!
these are great cause they will hold any pose you make them in.

What was the stuff you used to rap Bill the 1st and 2nd coat?
saran wrap so the tape would not stick
@@StiltbeastStudios Thanks, and the tap is?
heavy duty packing tape.

Yes, if you'd like!
This is awesome. I will be trying this. Thanks for sharing 👍🏽
do it!
My bother made one of these but we filled the body with newspaper. It cost a whole lot less than filling it with foam. Although it was not as sturdy as yours.
yeah, they can also breed mold if they get wet, I prefer long term things if possible, but that is a fast and cheap solution.
why not put a meter stick along the back before you start wrapping
Because then it would have a meter stick shape in the tape. Every now and then we will do one and someone has a cell phone in their pocket and in the finished shape form, you can clearly see the cell phone shape in their pocket!

Could we coat the mannequin with bondo to give it a durable hard surface?
yeah, Id use fiberglass resin or west system epoxy, they are both more durable than bondo
Love it! How long do you think one of these body forms would last if used outdoors?
its fence post foam, so its fine outdoors, 10-12 years?
This is definitely be a fun project. Thanks for the upload! 😊
lots of options!
Would this technique work with spray foam inside, like Gaps and Cracks?
No, since canned foam uses air to cure and it won't get enough air inside. You really need an a/b foam like the fence post foam that cures from a chemical reaction.

Thats what i was thinking. Mother is nurse and i thought the bandage blunt end scissors would work great.
Thanks for sharing!
is it possible to bulk out the insides with blocks of expanded polystyrene? the 2-part foams can get really pricey where i live.
Im using fence post foam so its not that expensive, but you certainly can pre fill it a but with styrofoam
@@StiltbeastStudios ah cool, thanks for the advice.
Does this work best with museum poses or do you think it'll work well with an action pose as well? Cool vid. Thank you!
That depends on how you want it posed! Could definitely work with both, just have to be careful
Very cool, thanks for the tutorial! Was thinking about the haircut but then you mentioned this was a few years ago 🤭
this video jumps around timewise over the course of 3 years lol.

what pose will he be in? he pretty much wears a skirt so you could do the bottom half the same as my weeping angel build I think
@@StiltbeastStudios I think I'll just have his arms stretched out in front of him with hands holding the "box puzzle " like he's handing to someone.
Can you use Marine Foam??
you can use any foam, I chose the fence foam due to durability and convenience.
Can you use a furniture type of foam to fill the majority of the cavity after you distribute the liquid foam around the outside perimeter of the form ? To save money and time ?
Great mannequin ❣️
great comment!
Why not mix the foam in the bag itself and dumb it into the casting?
to finish filling out an arm, I might only need a 1/4 bag. so as to not waste and to control the foam- I remove it first.
Very cool you are my new fav channel!!
you are my new favorite subscriber!
There was a time before Covid when the full body female mannequins on Amazon were only $45 + free shipping. I should have bought them ALL! :(
