I like your definition of the different styles. I run a railroad style. I know the end game and the players are deciding how to get there. I’ve been running the same campaign for years, they’re 18th level now.

Sandbox all the way here... well, in my regular campaign games that is. I'm rubbish at one-shots. I like to sit back and let the players take the reins. As such I like to have plenty of options, and a reasonably fleshed out setting. Once the ball is rolling, things take on a life of their own.

Being a first time DM, I was always afraid of falling into doing a railroad campaign, especially since I opted to run WDH, but it's been a blast for myself and my players. Having the autonomy as a player and still having an overall storyline (mostly story beats that I know I want to hit based off their backgrounds) allows for a good middle ground.
Your points of mixing the styles is absolutely true, I know for the holiday oneshots I've run all 3 styles, as it really helps keeps things fresh.
Great video, absolutely saving this one as a resource for new DMs!

Running some Rollercoasters gives me time to prep more sandbox style play later. So I think that makes my game a golf course? 🤔

So what do you consider running multiple modules back to back? Is that a railroad or a roller coaster?

depends on the adventure modules and how they are introduced! some modules may be more sandboxy style, and others are just a full on rollercoaster ride!
