    when painting plastic, its best to use plastic primer first, that will fill in that sanding gaps and then you can put the base coat on and it will be shinny and smooth

    Thanks for posting this video! It has given me enough information to know this is too much work just to paint a little item like that. If I were to do this job now I'd make sure that I were to do other items too. Things like the radio surround and other items similar to justify spending that time pulling the interior apart. After watching ya video decided on the vinyl wrap option first attempt showed up the defects in the plastic pretty well so tried again went down to a fine 2000 grit paper took a lot of work but end result looks fantastic. and by far the cheapest option. $8 for a sheet 1200x1000 went for a wood grain wrap

      @BrowneysGarage  3 года назад

      @@ahmadabdurrehman528 I'm far from an expert mate so I'd only be guessing, and not sure if there's much restriction in the stock head without a lot more power but can't hurt. Probably up around the figure we ran before a tune though if I had to guess, 150-155rwkw?
      The stage stuff people use is way too vague unfortunately, but if it shifts a bit firmer it may have just had an adjustment on the S5 solenoid (I believe, again I'm a hack!), seems to be a good go to mod for the BTR. May have to shoot the old owner a message for more details if you really keen though mate.

    Great video man, really well explained. I've just picked up a BA XR6 and the only two things letting it down are the shifter surround and the clear coat peeling off the spoiler (I've already fixed the stuffed bonnet struts). I'll probably go with the chrome plate option because I'm lazy and once I fix the clear coat it'll be sweet. I'm surprised you guys can fail a warrant for no selector lights, pretty sure that doesn't matter in NZ, could be wrong though.

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  4 года назад

      I need to get to the bonnet struts too actually, thanks for reminding me! If I wasn’t running through all the options I definitely would have just gone with the chrome plate in hindsight.
      It’s one of those horror stories I’ve heard is possible but you’d be very unlucky to find someone picky enough to fail you on.
      Thanks for watching mate.

    • @KiwiPokerPlayer
      @KiwiPokerPlayer 4 года назад +1

      @@BrowneysGarage I had an E39 BMW fail a warrant because of a few dead pixels on the dash display meaning it was a bit harder to read odometer kms. It was still obvious what the numbers were but he failed it anyway. Turned out the guy's son had been giving easy warrants out to his mates, one of them crashed and it was partly due to something that should have failed the car. So this guy was being ultra picky on everything. That's fine on the safety stuff, but things like dead pixels and selector lights are pretty frustrating. Especially when they're a pain to fix.

    Look out for the Gear Position Indicator Lamp when removing the Shift Surround, it's easy to pull the wires out of the lamp socket.
    (ask me how I know)...
    The Shift Lever needs to have the "trigger" removed to get the rear trim off for refinishing. there's a screw under the TOP of the lever inside...
    It IS possible to remove the Shift Surround (SS) WITHOUT removing the console. I have just done this job today and am typing this waiting for the paint to dry.
    You can lift the INNER console enough to get the SS out, but ensure you remove all fasteners and flex the "sides" of the rear console out of the inner console, removing six screws located under the console lid (and after the console lid has itself been removed there's a couple of scews as a surprise!)

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  3 года назад +2

      @Corn holio Didn't suss it at the time and it's been a while but looking back I think it would be possible. Would mean cutting sections of the center console that overlap/are bolted down by the shifter assembly. Likely all cuts would be hidden under the rest of the surrounding trim but I wonder how much this would effect the structure or any any noises and movement coming from the center console assembly.
      Don't think I would do it but I sure as hell hope I don't need to do it all again any time soon as well!
      And yes I'd say you do have the only one that isn't broken, wonder if that'll be worth big $$$ some day!

      @@BrowneysGarage turns out that was the least of my issues have to get all the bushes done the trans is leaking a very small amount and that was only replaced in September according to the invoice in the glove box.aswell as the lpg duel tank being just on 10 years old that needed re testing the rear drivers door window isn't working and lock isn't working I thought it would be the actuator after looking up a few vids so I've ordered one of eBay but I'm starting to think it's something is the power window in any way connected to the actuator your other video had an earth wire ground and that had both the symptoms I have. I'm gonna try do the gear selector globe and the door lock and window myself I'm a carpenter by trade pretty handy with tools I just have a fear of breaking anything else on this. The rest is out of my depth getting done at the shop now. @adam odering Oh damn, bit of a list there. Nothing too major I guess but doing those bushes may hurt the wallet.
      I’m sure you won’t have any troubles tackling those jobs you’re going to, there not too bad at all and they’re already broken anyway - how much worse could it get!
      I don’t think there is any interaction between the power window and lock actuator other than perhaps the wires are ran together, maybe just check they are still there running into the door from the body? If they’ve been pinched/cut/not hooked up when replacing a door?
      More than likely though just the actuator and window motor, shame cause I’ll have a video on diagnosing power window issues early next year hopefully.
      Have a great Xmas to you too mate, let us know how you go and hopefully things will be on the up for you soon 👍

      @@BrowneysGarage the power window for that is working from the drivers door control just not the rear driverside door so the window motor is working must be a wire break in between the door pillars yeah? Just got it back this afternoon new bushes and arms drive shaft replaced with a reconditioned one they cleaned up under the trans and can't see it leaking so I'll just keep an eye on that for now they cleared the check engine fault light but it came back on as soon as i turned the lights on I'm guessing from the gear selector blown globe. They did all that for 1500 which I thought wasn't bad it hurt like hell but I thought it would be more. Gonna try again tomorrow for a road worthy and hope they will let me fix those 2 faults over Xmas I have another concern that was raised today it's currently sitting on 265/45r20 factory for this model is 225/65r17 a couple of people have said there not road worthy the have brand new trends on them. I have to say I love everything about straya except road worthy process in nz we have to get a warrant of fitness every year twice if your car predates 2000 I thought it was awesome getting out of that but come to buying a second hand car at least you know they have been looked at by a mechanic at least once a year.

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  4 года назад

      @@adamodering4330 If the motor is working from the main control then the wiring to that door will likely be fine. Will be the wiring for the rear button in the door, button not plugged in properly or no longer working. Easy enough to see if all the wiring is there and plugged in with the door card off, if it's the button itself you may be able to pull it apart and check that all the contacts are clean? Otherwise they're reasonably cheap to replace, could maybe swap the one from the other side in to test first but not sure if they are interchangeable.
      Price sounds about right, hopefully you're not far off a RWC.
      And don't encourage them to bring in any more laws, it's hard enough to enjoy our cars sometimes as it is!

    I see the video is a year old. How did you go with the chrome? I've got an '03 Magna with a chrome gear selector surround like that, also wrinkled, and when the sun catches it, it blinds me! Happened several times when I bought the car. Then I put a 'cravat' on it,( in reality a tea towel) to stop the reflection- !!! 😂😂😂. Might have to upgrade to a paint job.

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  3 года назад +1

      Chrome surround is still going strong and looking good, though the car is normally garaged so hasn't had the hardest time.
      I have had a few instances of the blinding as you say! Really hasn't been too bad overall though so I'm happy with it so far. Well done on classing up the tea towel though, I'd run with it! 😂

      Hey Rob, bugger but I’d be lying if I said I’d never done similar!
      To replace the shifter plate carefully pry at the top of the shifter button, slightly down and out to remove the button. Then there’s a Phillips head in behind here from memory holding the plate on.

      Hi Phil, thanks mate.
      Probably asking the wrong guy, I am a hack who often operates on a ‘safety third’ basis in the garage! But yes battery disconnect, not sure of any further precautions beyond this - would hope they’re a pretty well fail proof device and not be prone to just ‘going off’.
