It's always interesting to see how different people fix their traffic problems in CS2. Although the traffic is *a lot* better than it was in CS1, I think we can all agree that cars merging into lanes needs to be looked at by the devs. The cars, vans & trucks/lorries seem to stop, turn, stop, turn again, & then finally merge into the right lane rather than doing it in one fluid motion like you'd do in real life.
Traffic is better in almost every aspect, except for that one issue, and it arguably makes the entire system worse than CS1 because of how massive of a problem it is with high capacity traffic.
The issue comes from sims merging into a different lane only when they are in the final segment of road before the node with the turn they want to do. They need to make it so that they are able to start merging several segments before the node with the turn. and if the segment of road is below a length, then just don't allow merging at that node. that would solve that weird nodes too close together issue that happen so often.
I'm facing the Same issue and the crashes Don't help either.I'm still on lvl 5 with Bare bone infrastructure and grids coz I can't design as good(subjective) as Kibitz.. So, Yeah.
Traffic is cosmetic in this part. City functions perfectly fine with bad traffic. Cars just despawn and teleport to their destination. Heck you can even build completely disconnected town and it will still work.
Hey Kibz, a note for the 27:45 mark! The reason they do that is a combination several things, road hierarchy, lane math, and pathing. The ones trying to go from far left to far right are entering the highway on the left side, but their destination is on the right side. The same goes in reverse for the far right to far left drivers. To fix it, you either need to adjust the road hierarchy at the highway entrances and exits to actually restrict traffic flow, as too many are in the same spot at the same time for lane switching to be effective; REDUCE the number of lanes if possible to reduce lane switching, or if that is not possible, add an additional highway exit on the left side that ends on the output of the far right side, so far left doesnt have to switch lanes, and vice versa for the far right to far left. I hope this helps :D
Based on how lanes like that look like over here in Germany, I'd argue that this checks out. Sure, this is a game and the AI may also be stupid at times but I'm sure that these changes could aid the AI from getting into these situations in the first place where they get confused. :) Hope Kibz sees this comment!
Kibitz: These parking structures are creating traffic hotspots! Also Kibitz: *keeps the parking structures almost all in the city centre* Kibitz: Why is there still traffic? XD My brother in Urban Management, you created the traffic magnets!!!
18:55 this is an actual, real-world phenomenon called "induced demand" it most commobly show up in cities that just use adding more lanes to fix traffic. While it seems like it should work, it actually doesn't for the exact reasons you listed. More lanes, more reasons to drive cars, more people drive cars, traffic re-emerges, and the cycle continues. Enjoyable content as always!
25:25 that is so cursed. the elevated highways and tracks around the district look (and probably function) like a wall to keep out all of the poor people from the decaying inner suburbs and the district itself looks totally lifeless. congrats, you’ve made houston.
As a suggestion, why not have a city bypass highway? Basically having a highway going around the city that either loops into itself or a highway going out. It'll reduce the number of people going through the city to get to the outer edges of the city and you can strategically place exits to reduce the traffic at those major points in the city.
That's what I've discovered is the best option so far in my playing, as the one major issue the traffic system has is what happened at the very end, very weird lane merging that screws everything up when dealing with high capacity traffic. Basically spiderweb bypasses and throughways into the city itself, focusing on keeping the pathway of it in commercial areas and have the exits and entrances on the edges of housing areas or dense commercial/industrial areas.
But im confused why kibitz doesn't understand the importance of forcing public transport onto people. I have nearly enough parking space for 10% of my population in decentralised transit hubs and it soothes the traffic massively
@@heinshaaine8153it's funny he almost got to that point when he was talking about the parking and essentially inviting people to drive rather than use the public transport, then he goes and takes out the public transport and I don't remember him putting it back in lol
I learned a cool trick to help with busy intersections!! You can get wider/larger intersections like the old node controller option by reattaching roads without snapping. Make a normal 4 way, delete 1 arm at a time and replace it with snapping off. When you replace the road place it as far away from the intersection as possible and let the roads magnetically attach from further away. Repeat on all sides one by one and you can get some nice big traffic junctions. The results are useful and actually look pretty good too!
I don't watch gaming channels but since I used to love simcity 2000 back in the 90's and had no idea this game even existed, I find myself binging all these videos. Right on brotherrr.
The traffic AI in this game is arguably just as stupid or even worse than cities skylines 1. The 3 point turn on highways and random u-turns in the middle of a busy highway is just ridicilous.
Hey Kibz, loving this series. I feel the pain of trying to fix traffic. My city has about 350k people in it and trying to manage that much traffic is a nightmare.
I made like a park and ride system with loads of free car parks on the outskirts of my city and a free subway line that heads into the city centre and that actually seemed to work well
from what ive seen with car parking, if you put them at the end of a T road, it seems to prevent the traffic slow down as they will go down the main street to the car park and drive straight into the car park rather than wait to slowly turn into it.
*Regarding highways:* - You might want to inspect the Twin Cities in Minnesota - The city has two major interstate highways - I94 and I35 - that cross the cities. But where they meet the cities, they bisect to a I35 East and West before becomming I35 again East and West of the cities, while I94 becomes I494 and I694 North and South. I94 does continue through the cities, but I494 and I694 separate and then rejoin that highway once they pass the cities. They meet in the middle with several more highways in the city of Saint Paul at the renowned Spaghetti Junction. The point is that there are highways that completely encircle the twincities, bisecting in North and South. and again by East, West and Central. I believe completely wrapping your city with highways while bisecting it north-sout, east-west and providing on-ramps and off-ramps as you go would get rid of a good deal of traffic.
I wonder if Kibbitz realizes instead of traffic dispersing throughout the city by building highways over main roads. It might be better to build a ring highway around the downtown area with various entrances and exits. But meh, we're talking about a man who zoned an entire residential area for the sole purpose of being his slave- I mean.. "workers" to work in the mines and make more money. XD

You need to connect the train lines so it is possible to go from one end of the city to the other end. Those short shuttle lines you have now don’t work.
I think one of the problems with this is just how the game decides that cars should take 3 point turns while on a paused highway... Like, in reality, you NEVER take 3 point turns on a highway regardless of how slow traffic is, because... Well, it just causes more traffic!
Not sure if it would work, but have a central parking area with highway access and one ways, but then have pedestrian streets from there to subway, train, and bus terminals.
