A trick I learned feeding a crow I rescued, is to use chopsticks when feeding. They acted like a beak stand in and protected my fingers from the hungry little bugger. 😂
I live inside a forest (in India). A few crows come to my window every morning (and sometime repeats their visit during the day). I give them a treat they like - locally they are called 'gatiya' - little pieces of fried noodle like sticks made from bengal gram flour (it is a local snack). What is amazing is the pinpoint accuracy with which they pick up the tiny tid-bits from my hand - never ever did their beaks touch me - forget about hurting me. It is so wonderful to have these friends visit me and trust me enough to allow such an interaction. We literally have an eye-to-eye conversation.
What amazing birds.......from the kingfisher family. There are species of birds that are of a very high intelligence.... I'm always amazed at how willing your birds are....also magpies, to be so close to you. It's more than just food, I think......but their curiosity as well as being a highly social species.
Did you make that up? Kookaburras are not particularly intelligent and the are most definitely not a social species, in fact they are highly territorial, experiments have shown they will refuse to take food from another’s territory even when it is very close to the edge of the other’s boundary. Kookaburras have tight familial bonds but not with other groups of kookaburras and will defend their territory make them only social when females leave the family group to breed with other males. Highly social species are birds that do not exhibit territoriality such as Rainbow lorikeets.
Such big beaks when they’re so close!! My Dad used to feed blue-winged Kookaburras sporadically and got such enjoyment out of seeing them close up. We lived right next to the Murray River and saw so many varieties. Thanks for bringing back some great memories! ❤
You saw so many varieties of Kookaburras? Blue Winged kookaburras are rarely seen south of Brisbane (except near the coast) so seeing them on the Murray must have been a treat. Don’t worry about their big beaks, they’re not particularly strong.
@teeanahera8949 We had blue-winged kookaburras mostly. I should have clarified that there were varieties of kookaburras young and old and occasionally we heard laughing kookaburras. Along the Murray there are huge numbers of all sorts of birds (sorry about that).
Great start and such a welcome .They love their treats and your knee. Have a great weekend in what is looking rather good weather Hope the chickens are also doing well .Best wishes ... to all :)
Oh wow how cute are these! Beautiful! 😍I remember a few years back, a lovely old gentlemen used to always be stood in our local park, underneath these huge Trees, and he would have his hand out-stretched with bird food and literally every kind of Bird species you could name would be flying down to his hand, landing on his hand and feeding off it. I especially used to love seeing the cutest little Red Breasted Robins feeding! They were sooo tiny and cute! 😍
Thanks for giving treats to these wonderful creatures, your a very lucky person & obviously a kind soul to have such Birdy friends. PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤.
Beautiful birds their chicks are cute too!! They're also good at getting you out of bed early hours of the morning with their laughing calls but hey that's how they communicate. Australia
I'm reminded of a song I learned in grade school: Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, merry merry king of the bush is he, laugh kookaburra, laugh kookaburra...I can't remember the rest...
We owned a takeaway food shop in a holiday resort town & they use to come every day & I would feed them raw mince . I would throw it in the air & catch it to the amazement of our customers. In NSW Australia
They love mince but remember they need to use their beaks for cutting their food. Many butchers have offcuts that ccan be cut up into small strips or even the packaged beef intended for stir fry.
Yipes.....they appear a little rambunctious to me....I wouldn't want to feel a stab from one of their strong beaks! I love wild animals and birds too, but maybe not in my lap! The wild javalina here in Arizona's White Mountains know me...but I take no chances......ok. I speak very softly to them at all times....and never turn my back to them! 😆
Yeaaa Australia gave mee a 3 month e-visa I spent (mostly) in an ancient caldera town: Yuki Disappointed I never got 2 see/experience a kangaroo/"joey" HOWEVER: (happily) did get alot of experience of: KOOKABURRAs giving them cheese chunks .. after 2 months they were so tame as this gal shows us. Physically cookaburras are quite large birds - about like a seagul. Make the laughing sound The smart /sharp looking magpy (black & white) birds can make AMAZING sounds/songs (also like cheese)

That looks like their pecks would hurt. When the magpies take food from my hand they're so precise and careful. But some birds aren't so gentle. (I'm looking at you, swans)
I laugh like a kookaburra whist playing my Didgeridoo.Next thing the kookaburras started laughing back to me.I then did it again and again & they were copying my laugh.whilst playing the Didgeridoo I noticed they were coming in closer TOTALLY AMAZED by the sound of the Didgeridoo. They are my favourite bird since I could remember.🪶
That "shy" one lost his shyness real quick when food got involved 😂

Their mini T-Rex growling sound they use for greeting is just beyond awesome. Fierce and handsome at the same time.
They _"evolved"_ from T-Rexes huh?
There is definitely something ancient about kookaburras that you don't see with other birds.
@@overtorquednutAnd how would you know? Are you hundreds or thousands of years old?

Oh, I knew they looked familiar. Yeah kingfishers.
Didn’t know they’re related to kingfishers, but once I realized it, it was obvious.

I never saw a kookaburra so close up before. I love the brown and black stripes on the tail. And it's awesome that these little guys trust you!
I believe that Robins are quite amenable to hand-sitting ... wouldn't know why them in particular, though
They are so dang adorable❤ love the little dinosaur noises they make😂
What adorable little dinosaurs. 😊
They're so big but they just look like regular small birds. So cute
they are the largest kingfisher species int he world
I SO wish we had kookaburras where I live! The birds are SO LOVEABLE!
It’s one of those rare occasions where I’m glad I’m seeing double.
This is so wholesome. 🥰

Great close up video. What is it that prompts a Kookaburra to let out their magical song, is it at a usual time of day or is it a mating thing?
