The return of the king
Better than 80% bionic arms that you can buy.
Super happy to see you back! Was wondering what was going on, because you never know... Glad to hear that you'll be doing a wider variety of stuff, too. I loved your videos on the mechatronic eyes, and seeing other projects done with your style gives us more examples of how various stuff can be integrated into our own projects. I'm also glad to hear that you'll be including more of the failures into your videos, as I find I learn much more from them than from videos which only feature successes. It's often super helpful to illustrate the gotchas so we know to watch out for that sort of thing, ourselves.
Omg, you're back!!
HE IS BACK
Great to have you back!
A legend returns
love your projects, huge inspiration!
Awesome to see you again, love your work man
Reflow ovens are so over in the maker community. People moved over to hot plates. Fast, cheap, good quality, easy to use. Even without stencils. So go for surface mounts - people are totally ok with them nowadays. That surface mount phobia thing is history. Oh, and I'm glad you're back!
Nothing says “Happy New Year” quite like this, , “…it’s been a year daddy, I really, really miss u…”. Happy
New Year.
3:42 LUV THE CONTENT, as an artist/designer i found out that deep purple is the nicest color for that, and when the bronze/golden metal of the circuit gets exposed, its like BAM! pure magic! then using black sub boards(small addon ones) will bring elegance to it all. so theres my humble yet qualified(Master of Arts) suggestion.
Don't worry about what you're putting on here too much. Robots/animatronic projects are just as interesting to me as the hand, and I'm prob not alone on this. So do whatever interests you most and gives you energy, the videos are a win win for us anyways. (Sidenote: Receiving fabricated PCBs is better than christmas)
Holy shit I was waiting for this day
There's no other project I've been able to find that could do this in a way I found satisfactory. The one with those hydraulic muscles just barely seems to work and it lacks the dexterity this has.
Thank you for coming back.
As long as the pitch isn't too small (or BGA) it is actually not that hard to solder SMD components, like the servo IC's you mentioned. I would recommend to go the surface mount way instead of using clunky adapters.
Great to see some progress.
Thanks for the update!
^^ this. Some good magnification can go a long way towards making your soldering good too. I will add that if the IC has a ground flag, you will need a hot air rework station or reflow oven though
Agree. $50 reflow gun, some flux solder paste, and a pair of ceramic tweezers, it's easy peasy.
I'm currently waiting on a board from JLCPCB with about 300 SMD components, most of which are 0805 size. It also has four PCA9685 chips so that I don't have to bother with the breakout boards. I'll be soldering the whole lot by hand, as I don't have a reflow oven and the board is populated on both sides. For me, that's about the limit for what my SMD soldering patience will tolerate.
I think normal smd can be soldered with iron. qfn and others with pads under it will need hot air station or special pcb design. Also when get used to it hot air is nicer for mid size smd chips.
I have soldering station that has iron and hot air. (it was around 200e and haven't regret)
Great to see you back. I'm right there with you on delays in releasing videos because of perfectionism. My currnet project I've been working on for over a year. And that's why I havn't released a video in 8 months. Anyway. Glad you're back!
I had no idea F360 could design PCBs! A tutorial would be very welcome!
They integrated what used to be Autodesk EAGLE into Fusion360 - any EAGLE tutorials should be mostly applicable
“Perfectionism could be one of the things that stop me from posting videos or even working on this project.” Exactly. “And it’s good to show you the reality of things like this, which is that stupid mistakes happen [all the time, and engineering is iterative and difficult]”. I think a channel that excels because it shows the journey of engineering projects is Stuff Made Here. It’s cool ur posting again
Also I can’t believe it’s been 2 years. Happy New Year
Welcome back, looking forward to seeing more projects from you!
Revision is the bane and lifesaver of innovation. I have seen and used a " trick " for lowering wire count from servos. You already send power to the servo, you just need the difference between power and ground for the feedback so you can have a second connector from the distribution where power and signals go to the servos, power for the " Position sensors " from the board. The catch is all ground has to be ground for the entire system anyways so you could use conductive materials ( think Car Body ) for that and only one wire for power ( which is not likely in the prototype stage ). To sum up, 4 wires to/from the servo and 2 wires for powering the sensor ( resistor in place for position sensing the servo ). At the servo, 4 wires, power, PWM, to/from the wiper of the position sensor and ground. The wiper will be 3 contacts, the 2 for the distribution board and 1 needed to go back to the servo. This is a very interesting build and you can also change the shape of the PCBs to be a better fit in your design instead of your design to fit the PCB.
Perfect is the enemy of good. Glad you're back and also glad you're working on creatively-fulfilling things too. Engineering is fun but also aesthetics is fun too. Looking forward to spending 2023 with you Will!
HES BACKKK
FINALLY! I loved your mechatronic hand videos. I'm already exited and I haven't even watched your new video yet.
The best way this year could've started is by the return of the king 👑
Welcome back! Looking Great! Enjoying the progress.
Welcome back Will! I found your channel while researching bionic hands for fun last year. The work you do is amazing. I totally agree with your new mindset to post videos like this even when failures happen. I think we can all learn from each other's failures and even despite the shortcomings, it makes for great stories about how certain pitfalls can arrive in the process. Hope to see more soon!
Great to see you back! Happy new year!
dude it awesome to see you return, this brings me with so much joy. dude i love your videos
Welcome back. Great to see you again. looking forward to seeing more videos from you.
You're back! Great to see it. Happy new year!

Glad to see you back. Can't wait for more.
Glad you're back. Happy new year!🎉
that spine you showed for a sec looked awesome. cant wait to see vids about that
Thank you for comming back. I can't wait to see your quadrup design. Look so bionic
Glad your back whatever the reason of your absence the quality of your work prevail !
Happy to see you come back!!!!!!!!!!!😁😁😁
So glad you're back, love the videos!!
I'm excited to see more artistic and animatronic style videos, those are the ones I really love. Really am glad you're back, you're inspiring me to finally start some of my own projects finally.
you're back! this is amazing!!
So glad to see you return!
now THIS is a proper christmas present !! :) welcome back !!
Well come back, Will! I am looking forward to your future projects.
You're back!! Happy new year mate!
Love to see you back again❤
I love watching your process rather that the specific project itself. So I don't mind Videos that are failures
Glad you're back I only checked on your website last week to see if you'd posted on any news.
Welcome back! I've been waiting for more stuff :3
Finally!
Welcome back ☺️!
YAY nice to see you back!
"When the world needed him the most, he returned"
Im really excited for future content!
This is fab thanks for coming back to us!
Oh man I've been waiting for you to return!! so glad ure back
Welcome back, it's so nice to see you
Nice to see you back 🔥🔥
Welcome back, I hope to see more of whatever you come up with!
Hi Will! It's great to see you back and be sure that I for one am always as interested to see the "failures" as the success. The later never comes without the former! To maybe help you on a few of your pain points from this video: 1. For desoldering, consider using liquid flux and wick rather than those sucker things, it will make your life 100 times easier. 2. Don't be affraid to hand solder SMD components. With quality solder, flux and a little practice, it really isn't too hard. 3. Consider LCSC for browing and sourcing components, they're a sister company to JLCPCB but keep a much wider stock with a better search interface. Good luck this year!
You are ALIVE !!!😄🎉
Will you're back! That's what you love to see
I can't wait to build it, I cannot afford testing. So I have been waiting for u and finally you are back
AAAAGH! So glad you are back, I missed your content.
Glad to see you are back! I really loved your animatronic videos!
Awesome that you're back.
Welcome back. Cheers
I've soldered surface mount parts with a hotplate and bismuth solder. The hotplate was intended to preheat PCBs before soldering, but was a good bit cheaper than a reflow oven. Bismuth solder has a very low melting point, so it is easy to work with.
Also, hand soldering SMT is rarely worth it without a stencil. OSHstencil makes cheap stencils.
Welcome back! I discovered the joy of PCB design as well a few months ago. Such freedom, and incredibly cheap even with SMD service (I also used JLCPCB). But as others have said, those sop-16 chips you were looking at should be easy enough to solder yourself if you have to buy them from a different supplier. You could probably even do it with a soldering iron since the pins are exposed.
Good to see you're back!
The Mechatronic King returns!
On the topic of surface mount, you should look into drag-soldering. You get a glob of hot solder on an iron tip. It's for heat transfer. You then melt the tinned legs and tinned pads together. It's both easy and hard. Just remember to check for bridges. Your camera can make a really good microscope.
Absolutely brilliant to see you back! I work in mechatronics as well and love your work. In a way I am really glad you showed some of the silly mistakes you made. Serves as a more faithful representation of the things I also go through when working on projects (I have butchered so many PCBs at this point...). Looking forward to the next update.
It's a pleasure to see you back on youtube! I'm glad I stay subscribed
Great to see you back! These aren't failures, they're learning opportunities on a truly impressive project. Well done and thanks for sharing!
Great to see you back
A bloody pleasure to see you put out another video and see you doing your thing again. Happy New Year Will. Hope all is well. :)
Brilliant to have you back, I appreciate you going through your thinking process and showing your failures, too many of these channels make it seem like the creators are infallible
Welcome back man missed you tons
Great to see you back! Don't be scared of SMD components. They are pretty easy to to solder and you don't need anything special to be soldered. The iron you have is all you need.
thanks for posting. I'm working on a similar project and your videos are inspiring because as slow as you think you are going, I'm going even slower and so your speed of progress is actually very good compared to me and motivates me!
glad your back lad!
Thank you for returning...
Welcome back! I was so afraid that we had lost you!
Nice to see you back
So happy to have you back! I just checked the animatronic jaw of yours today and thought it would be fun to work a little more on it...time flies and these things take time!! So glad you are planning on doing videos again, keep up the good work!!!!
Just a tip, SMDs with side leads don't need reflow oven. If you have many pins it's a bit time consuming perhaps, but with the right technique it gets super easy. Actually I usually go for SMDs only in my projects and avoid through-hole components unless necessary (e.g. some power ICs).
I had to check I was still subscribed, good to see you again.
He is really good and so detailed about the work he does. His best quality is that he shares useful knowledge.🙏
The new year already starting out good with your return!
Also subsurface mount soldering is not such a big issue as long as the used packages have exposed leads, so no BGA chips, and have a reasonable size.
These can still be hand soldered with some patience, or with low temperature solder paste can be done with an hot air gun. This is still janky but way less than some messy prototype boards with hundredths of wires hanging of.
Welcome back❤️
Holy crap, I never thought you would return after 2 years I had lost all hope. So glad to see you back!!!
HE'S BACK! THE LEGEND RETURNS!
amazing work, great to see you're aback at it
I know the jump to custom PCBs is intimidating and then going to surface mounted is as well- but it is well worth it. You can pick up a $30-40 reflow heat gun and get everything you need onto a single board with a small footprint and minimal wiring. Good to see the progress and thought process behind all of this. My last job involved designing and assembling a few dozen surface mount boards for custom devices, and I have always had an interest in biomimetics. If you want to collaborate or just chat, please feel free to reach out. Best of luck, either way.
Yay! You're back!
love your work i am glad that your continuing this project
You're alive 🔥🔥
ZINDA HAI!!!
Woohoo! Welcome back!
Holy shit an update. I am stoked
Glad to see you back! I dont know how many times I have screwed up something I was designing. Then think ok I got it now for sure, only to forget something else. There are so many little details its impossible to get them all right in one try or for me even several. :)
Amazing work!
Hi glad you are back. Hope you make some cool stuff soon
Happy New Year! SMT is perfectly doable without an oven! Easy, even. I would just do a single SMT version that's easy to solder by hand, no THT necessary.
Yeah, no reason to double the effort by designing two versions, especially not during the proof of concept stage.
Welcome back!
