Hey Rae, being from Europe I did a little bit of research and the EMB number is not a colour pigment number, but a french packaging number. This means that both tubes were packaged in the exact same factory! So no more speculation there! They are the same! We have something similar here in Germany with foods in discounters, which is why I got that idea. The wasp pictures were amazing!

Yes! Pigment numbers are usually the same between brands from different manufacturers (eg PG7 is always Pthalo Green no matter the brand)
I couldn’t even see a pigment number on the LV paints, which is a major red flag to me as a watercolour painter. Any respectable art brand always includes pigment numbers.

Brands like LV believe that any association with any other brand would dilute their brand. They're a brand that, across the board, exists only for people to be able to say they're paying for that brand because they're rich. There's no promise of quality, having a co-branded name would dilute the exclusivity and the proof that you can spend money on that name. It's not a bug, it's a feature.

Louis Vuitton has some nerve, honestly. I mean, obviously we’re expecting that they’re private labeling from an existing art company - paints take YEARS of pigment sourcing, formulation, and testing to get a high quality product that has been tested for light fastness, etc., so I wouldn’t expect them to start their own line from scratch. But to go to a top of the line brand like Sennelier and private label their bargain basement student range?? For what they know they’re about to charge for it??? I have no problem saying it: *it IS a scam.* It is.

If you're not going to say they're lying then I will.
I used to work in the retail industry and we had a warehouse for clothes. We shipped to all kinds of stores both high end and low end. The thing was the clothes were ALL THE SAME. They were made by the place I used to work and when we had a high end store place an order and we didn't have enough of the certain item they ordered, we would go to the low end store order, pull the item out, take the low end tags off, sew the high end tags on and send the order to the high end store because they were paying more for the item, but, not much more.

When it comes to products that designer companies don't actually make, (this includes makeup and proving with the art supplies) it is common knowledge they do Private labeling the stuff that they put into packaging. It's seriously just to show off their logo and designer bags/containers. This was a big conversation within the Make up community during the time of Morphy when they begun. (but since then Morphy had actually stopped private labeling). This just the first time people are actually noticing the private labeling on the art supplise because of the exact pencils used from both Chanel (a rather problematic company within it's own right for several reasons) And Louie Vuitton. If you see them exactly the same, it's Private Labeled. And they can get away with it because they're not focusing on the actual art supplies in their subscription. they're focusing on the container they are in.

Rae I hope you see this!!! On a similar topic to this video, I recently saw a Koi watercolor set that looked VERY similar to the Stuart Semple one I've been using... Like identical packaging and everything, palette looks the same except in different order. Similar price range though. Would love to see you test those brands to compare!! Would be kind of disappointed if they were the same because I've always held Stuart Semple to high standards, and the watercolors are marketed as "the colorest watercolors" and their website implies that they came up with it all themselves. Please please please do a test!!!

I reckon they've brought these out with their label to give as gifts (eg in gift bags) for high-end clients (think stars at the Oscars- they apparently get gift bags there in hope that these A-listers will support their brand). I can imagine these, otherwise, inexpensive paints have been sent to high-end fashion buyers and magazines as part of a Christmas package. Of course they're not worth $2000 but they're trying to make promoters feel 'special'.

In the coloured pencil sets from the fancy brands, at least you got the case, which was probably the only thing about them that was made by the brand. With the watercolours, you get a clear plastic case with a LV sticker, and the paints, which also have a branded paper wrapper. The whole thing is whitelabeled stuff, and that is just really sad. They could at least have made a fancy bag for the paints, or at least made a clear version of the box the cheap ones came in. I think having a clear palette could be a great way to colour match the paints.
But maybe the LV brush is really special, and worth a thousand dollars?

It’s called private label. Companies will sell their products cheaper to other companies, because these other companies use their own packaging and delivery and advertising. It’s not just art, it’s very common in grocery stores. The grocery store label product could be your higher end product. You have to test them out, because all store brands are not the higher quality. But, once you figure it out, you can save money.

I will say, as a watercolorist, they way you use the watercolor is supposed to be in thin layers that allow for transparency. A lot of artists will allow the watercolor to dry first, then reactivate with water to avoid using too much of the raw paint. As well as when using them wet, you are only supposed to use a small amount with your brush and mix with water. I would avoid taking such a large amount of the paint and just filling with water as this makes it hard to judge just how much paint you are using and leads to too much paint being used.
European watercolors tend to be more muted in color to allow for layering, and you must layer to get full color of the paints. If you want a bright watercolor, I would recommend some eastern watercolor brands like Kuretake or Mijello Mission gold.
It's unfair to judge a watercolor on brightness because often they are designed to be light and transparent.

Louis Vuitton is not an art supply company. These items aren't really meant to be used as art supplies (as silly as it may sound). They're either considered LV collectibles (for example for fancy/rich artists who might like LV or high-end products in general) or are bought purely for the packaging (which they may or may not use). The point is that the "art supply" inside the packaging is most likely just meant as a placeholder for better quality supplies artists already have. The same goes for the pencil cases. It would make no sense for a fashion company to spend lots of money in Research and Development in art supplies when it's not their main business, which is why they white-label products from other companies. This is extremely common in the art-supply world and is nothing "shocking" nor anything new.

I don't think it's disappointing that LV puts their label on a product they didn't specifically create. A lot of brands do that and it's pretty common practice. What IS disappointing is that they didn't choose a quality product to do that with. This tells me that LV is waaaaaay more concerned with the money they can rake in than the actual quality of their products. I would be wary of literally anything from LV at this point. And this is NOT a dig at Sennelier, because they are upfront about their paint - it's student quality and is being sold at a reasonable price point. So, good for Sennelier and boooooooo to LV. (Edit to add that Sennelier also sells a higher quality line that LV could have chosen but did not.)

  • @justacatwhocantype

Even the best artist watercolors would not have been worth $2000. It's clear to anyone, even without having tested the paints, that the price is not about the paints but about the bragging object, in this case a clear plastic box with stickers on it. I could laugh at this, if it weren't such sad proof of how unfairly wealth is distributed in the world. People using their money to buy themselves genuinely nice or useful things is one thing, but this LV watercolor set is on the NFT-level of brain-free frivolousness.
