Sandoval is a real musical treasure. His "I Remember Clifford" album is beautiful. His story growing up in Cuba, playing in the band Irakere and "running away" to America is really interesting.
Well I wanna play like he does but I actually play the trombone as my main horn, the second is the Tenor/Bari Sax and the third is the Trumpet. But I would lovely play my whole time on the Trumpet and the Flügelhorn 😉
Dizzy Gillespie, You're my favorite musician of all time and I miss you a lot- I wish I could've seen you play live- but at least we have your students and colleagues to listen to, as well as your own recordings. :-)
The Alchemist League I'm with you 1000% Diz is... He was beyond amazing & I imagine seeing him perform live must have been just that. As you said, thankfully he has so many people he took under his wing that Diz's influence will continue for generations to come. Back when I was in high school (1997) we were able to get Jon Faddis to come & do a clinic. I have never been so amazed & humbled!

As someone who does a little mouth trumpet, I can comment a little on the second lick from Mr. Sandoval. That would have been nearly impossible for Mr. Colbert to duplicate for there are limitations to the mouth trumpet that a normal trumpet doesn’t have. The most relevant in this case being speed. Mouth trumpet is basically singing. It is just singing in falsetto with a mostly closed mouth (so the lips buzz), so a mouth trumpet cannot be played faster than a person can sing. In my experience, there are very few people who can sing as fast as that second trumpet lick.
