Cr0cket was on to something when he said, "...you have to have an edge for that." The parang looked to be the only one there that had any degree of sharpness to the blade, being sharpened half way up to the spine. Sort of nullifies any test done on design of the machete if they don't all have an equally sharp cutting edge, or at least to the limit that the design of the machete allows. That way, they're all at peak operating performance levels, and thus a fair test can be run.
an unsharpend cold steel kukri couldn't have been a worst choice they come with an absolutely terrible edge, the 2x4 was probably sharper than that thing
@@reuben4710 A GRINDER?? Negatory! A file if needed, then the stones. Too many guys don't use a grinder properly and will over-heat the blade and reduce the edge temper, not to mention messin up the edge geometry. As far as Cold Steel goes, I never received ANY knife from Lynn Thompson that needed any work on the edge beyond a few passes with a ceramic stick. Including the CS kukri.. I collect CS (Thompson) knives, mostly bowies and kuks).
Not sure what happened with the Cold Steel Kukri. I have the Kukri Magnum. it stays sharp and destroys everything I put in front of it. one of my favorite blades by far.
I've been eyeing those Condor parang for awhile, either the Eco or the Bushcraft. It seems like one of those and a small knife for lighter tasks and you're set.
Out of the box the condors always come real sharp, but given the chance to put an edge on each one I think the Gerber would have prevailed. Love those heavier bolo type blades. Thanks for listening.
How about a Barong Machete... they are very good and have most of the features of all 4 types. Great video. That Condor Parang has been on my wishlist for quite some time.
U should get guys who have run a particular type of machete (masterchete) style go against each other and see who is the fastest. That would be a test of best design overall same rules out of box products and see who runs the fastest.
I have a $20 Carona I bought 30 years ago. I cut line with it land surveying for 10 years and have used it for literally thousands of landscaping tasks. Still chugging. Best $20 I ever spent. Came with a genuine leather, highly detailed, latin style sheath as well.
I have had a real kukri for years (made in Nepal) and I would say it does better than the one in the video. I have done all those tests less the pineapple one. I would mostly agree with the results. The only machete type I have not used is the parang and would love to have one. From the many comparisons I have seen, I believe it is the most versatile design.
I like the video but there is a lot of inconsistency, from the amount of twigs on each brach, his fatigue, the wood, the amount of swings. Still a good effort to make a comparison.
I own a few cold steel machetes and I sharpen knives for a living. I consider these things unfinished from the factory. There's a bevel but not what I'd call an edge. While that's true for most machetes, cold steel is one of the worst. These tests comparing styles don't make a ton of sense without putting a proper edge on each of them.
You Hey, Blade HQ, I got this idea. You know how you guys do the contests with the knife obstacle course? I was thinking you could either do a different type of contest or add this element to the “obstacle” course. Have part of the course be a segment or several different segments in which you have all the different types of opening methods represented by their respective knives and have the contestants open and close each type of mechanism like 5 or10 times. For instance, there could be a CRKT Snaplock, a flipper, an out-the-front knife, a back lock, a CRKT Fulcrum, and any other type of mechanism ( There could also be a Spyderco hole-type that needs to be Spydee flicked too. ) . I just think that the finesse required to open and close should be incorporated into the fun. PLEASE!!!!
Best brand out there I have seen for the buck is a Thai company called Aranyik---the Etoh is my fave. Canterbury used a scyle style in Dual Survival. Hand forged and high carbon only bsd is the sheath
Awesome vid, but I love it when 2 or more people compete. There should've been 4 people starting off at the same time, or turns, or partners and that would've been a great video. But I did like the accuracy concept.
Say Heah BladeHQ , Thanx for the service and how great my knives look when I get them, Job well done, Thanx. But this is the time of the year, I start practicing with a Long Knife in Buckeye Country, Brambles can get as tough as that team up North. I teamed up my Ka-Bar Johnson Adventure Parangatang and my Potbelly. I could carry both but not both on person, one or the other. But the Parangatang is awesome. I wished you could of show cased it in this video. Again, Thanx BladeHQ.
Nice video, had a feeling the Latin and parang would do best. Ontario has their design down when it comes to their machetes. And condor with manufacturing roots in el Salvador know how to make all kinds of machetes.
I would cover international shipping if I won I am in the market for a good brush clearer, at my clay pigeon yard the stands get overgrown. Great video! Thanks
The Cold Steel comes dull as hell with huge burrs and a burned edge. They picked the worst representation of a Kukri(even though it's more of a Kukri shaped object) and wonder why it doesn't cut.
Alexander Yuri I was so just saying the same thing and then read you and other comments not to mention brands material and skill all make a large difference
I still remember my first machete that I purchased at Home Depot to try and clear the ivy in my front yard. Worst experience ever, my pocket knife did a better job. Wouldn't mind giving them another try after this video though. I wonder how it would stack up against a larger fixed blade.
I think a major flaw in this competition is that all 4 tools came from different companies. If all 4 came from one company like cold steel or condor then I think we would have had a better representation. The difference in the tools edge geometry/sharpness varies greatly from company to company. I'd like to see this revisited with the tools all coming from the same company. Good content though keep it up.
+KnifeHQ what made y'all change your minds? Was it to not show favoritism to a certain company so people wouldn't be like "So-and-so must be getting paid by -insert knife company here- to do this video." Or was it to get a variety of different products on screen to maximize advertisement? Or what?
I've been waiting for a video like this...was looking at a kukri and it was so sad seeing it not able to get through the 2x4 :-( ..... but great video! After seeing this video I might have to check into the parang too. Hope I win one!
I liked the video and info but i dont liked that the quality standard for the machetes where diferent from each others, example edges and the size of the machetes where the smaller versions.
+Rush Yeah my thoughts as well. That was a Cold Steel kukri machete they used, there are plenty better than that. They should have used a better Bolo too, instead of that Gerber with the hollow ground edge.
umm, the short parang is "evenly weighted" It's the long parang that is heaver out front for chopping... you can tell just by how you are holding it in your hand.
the test should be redone....the kukri must be sharpened in all honesty authentic kukris are around the same weight class as the kukri machete...the latin machete used was an ontario with a much thicker blade and also a poor edge on it consider using a tramontina machete sharpened or a gavilan machete sharpened.....
And btw I have bought knives from blade hq so just asking seems like last one was miss used...represented but I'm no expert and my otf broke in less then 2 monthes
Heard many stories about Malaya jungle warriors fought off Japanese and communist during ww2 with the parang. I think the name parang means war in native language.
Goes to show how much edge geometry effects a blades ability, that condor parang has the best edge geometry out of all of them with that long convexed edge and condor out of the box probably had the best edge, cold steels machetes from what i have seen with mine have the worst edges out of box.
i agree. my kukri machete had no sharp edge whatsoever. but as a knifemaker putting an edge on was easy. i do love it though. one of my favorite machetes, works very well in chopping and small stuff.

Andy Ho if it's a properly sharpened tool it should bite right into the wood, especially at that angle he's swinging it. With a sharp blade I'd be confident in holding the 2x4. That being said, with something as dull as the cold steel kukri was I wouldn't put my hand on the wood either

@Matthew Longo start with a bench grinder to put a real edge on it and then sharpen it with a good old fashioned wet stone and a little elbow grease.

can we get a redo of this one with quality competitors vs the condor? I knew the parang would win but I was looking forward to a decent challenge.
I like the video but there is a lot of inconsistency, from the amount of twigs on each brach, his fatigue, the wood, the amount of swings. Still a good effort to make a comparison.
That's a shame on the Kukri. If you gave him the Cold Steel one Mark was holding, I think it would have been a much different story...
He WAS using a Cold Steel kukri. The machetes shown in use were all of similar price range. The Gurka Kukri would have been far out of that ballpark.
@@DeadBoysTwo yeah but the royal kukri that they sell is better
does anyone else cringe when he slams the blade of the machete into the ground when cleaning the green stuff??!!!!
Really great way to show the capabilities, I do think that a better handled version of the Latin would have made a substantial difference.
inconsistent sharpness makes this test/comparison useless
