That note of melancholy on which she ends her visit… she’s a poet through-and-through! Who knew a five-minute video could bring me to wistful tears? :’-) Well done, Ms. Denis!
Carl Th. Dreyer Box Set Tout va bien - Jean Luc Goddard and Jean-Pierre Gorin Gate of Flesh - Seijun Suzuki His Girl Friday - Howard Hawks Summer with Monika - Ingmar Bergman (Something Wild - Jonathan Demme)
She picked movies that influenced her as film student under the directors that came out of Cahier du Cinema, not necessarily the movies the influenced her works. Those films made her melancholy for what is now past forever. An amazing moment.
At the NYFF showing of White Material the screening kept getting delayed because the fire alarm went off multiple times, they had no clue why, and everybody was completely frustrated. Then finally they got a lid on it, and Claire Denis comes onto the stage, and says, "I'm sorry for the trouble but I just wanted to see a real New York firefighter."
It is such a pleasure to just be in the PRESENCE of this woman; and to listen to her thoughts about cinema is a treat! I wish I could spend an afternoon with her, sipping white wine and just talking about our favorite film classics, :)
I always feel good about myself when someone I admire like Claire Denis speaks of certain films the way I do. There's that helpless feeling while viewing Summer with Monika of losing one's youth and I'll never forget the feeling after seeing Ordet. I can only explain it as awe. I should add, I've only seen Beau Travail once and declared it a perfect film (as I did with Ordet).
It's sweet that Denis is still in awe of Hawks. It all makes sense now: Rivette + Dreyer + Godard + Hawks = Trouble Every Day followed immediately by Friday Night.
Please have Robert Pattinson in to do this. He probably has most of the collection, he's a true cinephile and he's also hysterically funny when commenting about films.
It's lovely to hear you speak, Claire. There are beautiful moments in your films too. I think of the very humane 35 Rhums and the ravishing scenes in L'intrus
It too me three replays to realise she was talking about ' Summer With Monika. ' I utterly agree with Claire Denis. Arguably it is Bergman's finest film.
DrunkenM33rkat I feel like Kelly isn’t quite in the conversation yet. I think she’s outstanding, but I think she has a to make a few more films before that can be said. She’ll do it for sure though.
She showed the others that Ive watched just how to do it,(except for Mike Leigh) how it should be done in that closet, give something of yourself, talk about the films, not just run in and grab free films.
I love her. I always feel relieved when a film-maker I like doesn't choose Weekend. If you do, you're dead to me. 'Tout va bien'? Well, it could be worse. Btw, when will we have 'Predator' in the Criterion collection?
Criterion please tell them to show it clearly towards the audience So I can watch it clearly Most of the time one can’t catch the picks titles because of the accent

I could watch her talk about movies all day. I’m always in awe when greats are humbled by the works of others. Only making them even more great.
Hearing her talk about Howard Hawks's effect on her is fascinating and adorable.

this is the greatest thing i have ever read

Love her! She seems so extremely well mannered too.
"Can I put it in the bag?"
NO
"May I put it in the bag?"
I smiled at that moment : ) So cute
I liked that vs the people who just stuff their bag full
"May I put it in the bag?"
"No."
"No, thief. Get tha hell outta here".
Are you trying to be funny? That is amusing.

The biggest thing I miss / regret in my life is not learning French language. Sounds so beautiful and natural.
Il est toujours temps de commencer :)
@@somniansvulpes
oui, c'est l'un de mes futurs projets (thanks to Google translation)
Tout va bien!
@@whysoblutube oui
well have you?
she deserves much more recognition. beau travail and l'intrus are very very good and unique movies.
One of the best directors alive. Can’t wait for High Life, and hoping to see more of her films given a Criterion treatment.
High Life kinda sucked 💀
@@soylentcompany5235 I thought it was really good.
@@DaichiS4815162342 I felt like it was really extremely boring and pretentious but thats in the eye of the beholder i guess
@@soylentcompany5235 UNBELIEVABLY PRETENTIOUS
@pacC-Mman I just felt the self indulgence come off in that film.
She was like: OH, Magnificent, Beautiful, Dreamy, Splendid, What a momemtum, Yes, [Constant breathing].
A LIVING GENIUS!
Thank you so much for getting her on-board, my entire life has been leading up to this moment omg
This is amazing, to hear her talk about these films and filmmakers is beautiful. Such an incredible woman, I love her so much.
It's sweet that Denis is still in awe of Hawks. It all makes sense now: Rivette + Dreyer + Godard + Hawks = Trouble Every Day followed immediately by Friday Night.
I thought we were all in awe of Hawks. I remember watching them on slow or rainy Saturday afternoons as a kid.
her pronunciation of howard hawks is wonderful aha
Can't wait for High Life
Really happy to see her pick up some Seijun Suzuki. Please put more of his work out on Blu-ray!
"...this youth and this light of summer is not going to last" - how very Denis to leave us with that
Please have Robert Pattinson in to do this. He probably has most of the collection, he's a true cinephile and he's also hysterically funny when commenting about films.
omg didnt know i need this
the fact that people underestimate Pattinson because of Twilight just infuriates me, guy is really talented
@@kalel.m2t perhaps I need to give him a chance, there any videos of him talking about films?
@@LorFire have u not seen the lighthouse? the guy just nailed it

Beau Travail definitely needs to be in the collection. It is insane that that film is currently unavailable to American audiences.
and so it is
Does this mean that Beau Travail is on the way? 🥰
vinayaka bhat Hopefully.

I love these little pick-clips. Merci mille fois. Thank you, Mme. Denis pour votre oeuvre.
I feel exactly the same about Summer with Monika. Beautifully explained
On HIS GIRL FRIDAY: "Howard Hawks is always giving a lesson about how bad I am."
Add Trouble Every Day to the collection! It’s a masterpiece
It's lovely to hear you speak, Claire. There are beautiful moments in your films too. I think of the very humane 35 Rhums and the ravishing scenes in L'intrus

High Life is such a beautiful movie
My goodness, the way she says "Howard Hawks" ... yes, I'm in love with this woman.
Best female director ever.
Better than Agnes Varda or Chantal Akerman?
Tim Holm Varda is at the top for me
Kelly Reichardt!
DrunkenM33rkat I feel like Kelly isn’t quite in the conversation yet. I think she’s outstanding, but I think she has a to make a few more films before that can be said. She’ll do it for sure though.
y'all sleeping on Anna Biller.
Wow. She speaks as lyrically as her films do!
I love the way she says "Owar dAwk"
respect to her for pickin a Seijun Suzuki flick
please get 35 Rhums, Beau Travail and U.S. Go Home in the collection
Beau Travail just announced for September ‘20!!!
High Life is coming to the NYFF. It's gonna be good!

We want Nuri Bilge Ceylan.
titanik bar True that.
YESSSSS
Yessss
She really considers the movies like fine wine.
Holy moly
the best living filmmaker
Good joke
I'm a big fan of 1 out of every 3 Claire Denis pictures.
What a beautiful title in English, Gate of Flesh.
Absolutely divine. Thank you, Criterion!
More females please! Gerwig, Coppola, Campion etc
paul w strongly disagree
why?
Campion is in another league entirely from those first two. "Bigelow, Ramsay, Campion etc" would've been a more even statement.
0Axel0, Campion is still lightyears ahead of Bigelow and Ramsay, too, imo. A more even field of talent for me would be Campion, Armstrong, and Kopple.
FungusMossGnosis Varda, too. How'd I forget about Varda.
Gate of Flesh is great!!
I like how she says Howard Hawks 😃
Please release Ordet on bluray!
All the Dreyer's need to be updated to Region 1 or region-free) Blu-ray.
Mulher incrível. Obrigado por compartilhar um pouco do que esses olhos viram e gostaram.
White Material, 35 Shots of Rum, The Intruder and Beautiful Travel ❤️
Legendary woman.
QUEEN.
"Gate of Flesh. What a beautiful title in English."
Many believe she is the best female director ever. Well, among the blind, the one-eyed is king.
She showed the others that Ive watched just how to do it,(except for Mike Leigh) how it should be done in that closet, give something of yourself, talk about the films, not just run in and grab free films.
Man I love her films
Antonio Campos would be great
What is that puppet on the bottom shelf?
I'd love to see Peter Jackson (and possibly Fran Walsh) in the closet.
Where is Bela Tarr?
Vendredi Soir ♥
Christmas came early this year.
Summer with Monika
"I feel so shy .... i feel like a failure ...." wow
