Low range: Mariah. Those notes don't seem like they're any effort for her at all. Leona, though she's hitting them, loses clarity and strength at her lower range, forgetting to focus downward. Belts: Hmm...difficult...Leona's are nowadays much more consistent. However, Mariah's resonance (when she's rested) is pretty much unsurpassed. Just listen to how much her voice RINGS at the top of the belted notes, even after her prime, because though they thinned out like the dickens, there's still a ringing force behind them. Leona loses that ring at around E5/F5. Head voice/falsetto: Mariah - she uses a more connected voice, especially at the C6-D6 range, where it's a perfect blended head/whistle mix that is incredible in tone and sustainability. Leona has a great falsetto, but due to this, she rarely uses actual head voice. After looking at the three ranges presented, I'd give it to Mariah. Leona's a great singer, and she isn't that far off from Mariah (despite not being to my personal taste, I simply judged them both up to standard vocal technique), but she simply isn't on the same level. To be fair, very few are.
that's right! you can listen to Without You and that wasn't even her lowest note. That's what you can do when you have a 5 octave range. Her voice is incredibly complex, her technique is flawless. So many people are too impressed that they don't believe it. The video on youtube maybe dubbed, but if you want to find her real performances just type undubbed behind the songs. It's still perfect, though.

Leona's head voice is brighter, has a more clear bell like sound, and has a vibrato. Mariah's head voice tends to be dull and most of the time she uses falsetto or whistle. Love this video! Mariah and Leona are my two favourite singers, it's too hard to choose between them! I'd love it if they could be friends or something haha :) Mariah's lows are everything. Lower Register: Mariah obviously(she doesn't lose color and doesn't drop her larynx on an Eb3) Belts: Mariah. Doesn't lose color even on a G5 and can make her larynx neutral. Leona belts with high larynx above an F5. Head Voice: Mariah because she uses it more often than Leona. Falsetto: I would say a tie. Leona's sounds beautiful but so does Mariah's. Whistle Register: Mariah of course because she is the one who utilized the use of the whistle. Not so sure about Leona's.

Oh God.. First of all Leona has incorrect technique, she pushes her falsetto to hit notes E6's and shit, the notes sound flat and she strains. All of Leona's belts are strained. Leona's lower register is breathy and weak. Mariah (nowadays) strains on belts when she's not rested (she has nodules). Her lower register is really good. Great Head voice and Whistle register. Who wins? Mariah.

Leona wins, if you compare Leona's top 10 live vocal performances of her songs with Mariah's she slays even if leona has a shorter career, the runs, the melismas, the silky smooth tone she never loses, that's an artist, check run live on x factor uk and the first time I ever saw your face. Compare with full songs not notes.
Mariah's melismas are far more complex than Leona's and many of Leona's runs and her style of singing is basically ripped off Mariah (see nearly all her X Factor performances). In terms of mastery of the full voice and range, melisma and agility, register transitions/switches, technique (larynx position, breath support) and power/resonance, Mariah has a big advantage over her. Not saying Leona is bad because she's good but not on Mariah's level and certainly doesn't "slay her". Besides, I think Leona's tone begins to get shrill and whiny the higher she ascends, particularly when belting above F5 and using too much falsetto to imitate whistles, it comes out very thin and breathy.

Sorry to say but Leona will never enjoy the same level of success as Mariah, she just doesn't have the ''it'' factor. Mariah not only brought a phenomenal voice to the table, she brought great song-writing skills and innovative material. She was one of, if not, the first mainstream pop singer to include a guest rapper (ODB) on her song Fantasy. This was kind of pioneering at the time and definitely left an impression on listeners. I want to say Mariah Carey. Leona can be sharp at times and it's very impressive! They both approach with different techniques. Leona is more operatic while Mariah is more artistic pop culture. Even with Leona approaching her singing with the technicalities of opera, Mariah still seems the better singer, not by a great amount, but still a noticeable one. I could only imagine if Mariah went for an opera based technique, she is definitely capable and experienced enough for it.

@joshpheonix There is a device called "mixer" which balance the level of sound... ... which levels the volume of the sound from the singer. so as long as it is not too far, you can hear just as loud as it is right near your mouth. and many old and experienced singers like to hold the mic a bit further when they sing high notes. leona did the same when she sings C6 in this clip....
Had Leona come out in the 90s, she would not have been noticed beside Mariah and Whitney. Though she is really talented, she rose to fame because most of today's singer are of a vey bad quality.

Even so, Leona doesn't win. A lot of her notes are weak and thin - her lower notes especially are barely audible nor sustained well, her upper belts are usually forced and her falsetto is breathy and shrill. Her musicality is ok but limited (very safe and very samey in a lot of her performances) and her use of melisma is basic in comparison to Mariah and actually very derivative of her more complex style.

I actually prefer Leona's voice, it's more expressive. Mariah's voice is amazing, and has a such a large vocal range, but that doesn't mean the notes she hits in that range are the best or nicest.

Low range: Mariah. Those notes don't seem like they're any effort for her at all. Leona, though she's hitting them, loses clarity and strength at her lower range, forgetting to focus downward.
Belts: Hmm...difficult...Leona's are nowadays much more consistent. However, Mariah's resonance (when she's rested) is pretty much unsurpassed. Just listen to how much her voice RINGS at the top of the belted notes, even after her prime, because though they thinned out like the dickens, there's still a ringing force behind them. Leona loses that ring at around E5/F5.
Head voice/falsetto: Mariah - she uses a more connected voice, especially at the C6-D6 range, where it's a perfect blended head/whistle mix that is incredible in tone and sustainability. Leona has a great falsetto, but due to this, she rarely uses actual head voice.
After looking at the three ranges presented, I'd give it to Mariah. Leona's a great singer, and she isn't that far off from Mariah (despite not being to my personal taste, I simply judged them both up to standard vocal technique), but she simply isn't on the same level. To be fair, very few are.
that's right! you can listen to Without You and that wasn't even her lowest note. That's what you can do when you have a 5 octave range. Her voice is incredibly complex, her technique is flawless. So many people are too impressed that they don't believe it. The video on youtube maybe dubbed, but if you want to find her real performances just type undubbed behind the songs. It's still perfect, though.

At Leona's place in her career, Mariah had already made one of the biggest selling albums by a female of all time, had an unprecedented 5 consecutive first #1 singles, and was already a very big force in the music bis. Her songs had very deep musical impact, and she played a part in changing the face of pop. Leona barely fits into the scene; she's not that versatile. Leona wins, if you compare Leona's top 10 live vocal performances of her songs with Mariah's she slays even if leona has a shorter career, the runs, the melismas, the silky smooth tone she never loses, that's an artist, check run live on x factor uk and the first time I ever saw your face. Compare with full songs not notes.
Mariah's melismas are far more complex than Leona's and many of Leona's runs and her style of singing is basically ripped off Mariah (see nearly all her X Factor performances). In terms of mastery of the full voice and range, melisma and agility, register transitions/switches, technique (larynx position, breath support) and power/resonance, Mariah has a big advantage over her. Not saying Leona is bad because she's good but not on Mariah's level and certainly doesn't "slay her". Besides, I think Leona's tone begins to get shrill and whiny the higher she ascends, particularly when belting above F5 and using too much falsetto to imitate whistles, it comes out very thin and breathy.

I want to say Mariah Carey. Leona can be sharp at times and it's very impressive! They both approach with different techniques. Leona is more operatic while Mariah is more artistic pop culture. Even with Leona approaching her singing with the technicalities of opera, Mariah still seems the better singer, not by a great amount, but still a noticeable one. I could only imagine if Mariah went for an opera based technique, she is definitely capable and experienced enough for it.

Even so, Leona doesn't win. A lot of her notes are weak and thin - her lower notes especially are barely audible nor sustained well, her upper belts are usually forced and her falsetto is breathy and shrill. Her musicality is ok but limited (very safe and very samey in a lot of her performances) and her use of melisma is basic in comparison to Mariah and actually very derivative of her more complex style.

I actually prefer Leona's voice, it's more expressive. Mariah's voice is amazing, and has a such a large vocal range, but that doesn't mean the notes she hits in that range are the best or nicest.
