One thing about shotgun mics that I want/need to know is how the angle they are placed in towards the mouth of the subject is affecting the sound quality. Have so far not found anyone mentioning it, you included.
To make the question clear: How much of a difference does it make when I place the shotgun mic on a boom close to the subject but facing in a steep angle down towards the subject's mouth. This seems to be the typical pattern. But how about placing it a feet more away but therefore more on a horizontal axis so that the capsule is more at the height of the subject's mouth? Since the soundwaves of the speech are moving more directionally out of the front of the recorded person, I wonder if that changes the audio quality noticeably.

the angle you choose will change the amount of room reflections captured. The angle also effects the if you experience any plosives. Best thing to do is to try it for yourself, so you have a working knowledge of what happens when you change the position, angle and distance of a shotgun mic from your sound source.
