the first dish was Nasi (not mee) Goreng Kampung (kpg is the abbreviation of Kam-pung). The small fishes are anchovies, dried & fried. The fried rice is fried with green chilies (that gives the green color), quite spicy, shrimp paste, eggs & topped with fried anchovies.. Prawn is optional and added some 'luxuries' to the original dish
we dont have any protocol on how to eat them. eat the way you like.. no problem...

The reason why they make the sambal not that spicy probably to consider the taste of people there assuming not that much people there can handle spice. But if you have time to come down to Malaysia, the amount of spiciness may suits you because the sambal have varieties type and the way they serve in different regions, there are some sambal made very spicy that can burn your tongue, moderate one and even sweet. Nevertheless, thank you for reviewing our food and enjoy our delicacies :)

Mix the rice with the sambal...then scoop it together with the fried anchovies, a bit of the fried chicken..then straight into the mouth. It'll be more flavourful. The sambal of our nasi lemak here is hotter and spicier..the one you had there is a bit lighter. Btw..I like your idea of dipping the fried chicken into your laksa's broth...I guess we all could have our food in any posssible way as long as we enjoy eating it..😁

Hi Malaysian here! You're doing great with all the food, no worries hahaa. Malaysians LOVE our dried and salted fish. We always eat them with plain rice so you get the hint of salt and crunchy bites along with sambal belacan (spicy shrimp paste). Malaysian cuisine uses a lot of spices for flavors, not for heat. Though some of the southern cuisine (in Negeri Sembilan and Melaka) tend to be spicier. Anyway my favorite from your picks is probably that dessert Sago gula melaka. I literally watched with mouth open and have never been so jealous of a mukbang 🥲
Oh and "Nasi Goreng KPG" is actually "Nasi Goreng Kampung" btw. Literal translation is "village fried rice" (village-style fried rice) and is a common menu at restaurants in Malaysia, with fried anchovies and spinach as some of the key ingredients.

For our culture, its one of the richest you can find anywhere in the world thanks to the multitude of races and no one's gonna gate keep you from celebrating any of it, if fact do celebrate it and feel free to wear any of the traditional outfit that you like. Bruv, Malaysian here. FYI Tuk Din means Grandpa Din...Din being owner's name I presume.
I think you triggered every Malaysian eating nasi lemak (fatty rice). The rice is cooked with coconut milk. Here in Malaysia we use fresh coconut milk, not from a can. The hot sauce, called sambal, is key for this dish. It needs to be sweet, savoury and spicy with a fishy taste, as it usually has ground anchovies in it. And you need to use a lot more per spoonful. People mix it til most of the rice turns red here in Malaysia. Spicy level ranges from a 1 to 10. And as other people have mentioned, IT ALL GOES IN THE MOUTH AT ONCE!
Even the curry noodle you ate. Fork some noodle, every protein and veggie you can find, and stuff your mouth. Chase this with 2-3 spoonfuls of curry each time. Now repeat til finish. I nearly switched off watching you eat these 2 favourites of mine. Lol.
Hope you get to try other Malaysian dishes sometime.

  • @kluangh1tam

The first dish was nasi goreng instead of mee goreng and that particular fried rice style is called kampung or village, call it village style fried rice or nasi goreng kampung. Mee goreng is a fried noodles or ramen dish. Famous version of mee goreng was made by Indian called Mee Goreng Mamak.
There's no wrong way to eat nasi lemak. Usually eaten like the way you ate the Kari Laksa, just put little bit of everything on the spoon, put it in your mouth and indulge. I usually save the best part for last like piece of chicken with little bit of sambal.
The salad came with satay is called Rojak, using the same spicy peanut sauce.
Roti canai usually eaten with chicken, beef or mutton curry and my favourite dhal gravy with sambal.
The egg came with nasi kerabu are usually salted egg, and the flower called bunga telang or talang usually used to colour the rice blue or violet with no particular taste or flavour.
Beef rendang was kind of a spicy curry stew that was cooked for a very long time, usually until the meat was super tender and dry with few to no gravies so you can keep it longer compared to other dishes, around 3-4 days and reheated daily. Usually cooked for a festivity like Eid celebration, rendang was eaten with lemang, sticky rice cooked in bamboo or ketupat, rice ball cooked in palm leaves packets. But the rendang was so tasty and wonderful it ended up eaten with nasi lemak as well as regular white rice. Chicken and cockles version of rendang are also popular among Malaysians. For Indonesian, they usually make rendang as one of a side dish for nasi padang.

You are trying our food. That's a great start.
From what I've heard, most of our dishes over there have been toned down because Europeans and Americans are not used to the spiciness and the aromas that is common for us Malaysians. Also, some of the ingredients are either too expensive or just not available in your country.
So, if you really want that truly rich flavour and spiciness, you'd just have to make a trip to Malaysia. 😁
From your reactions, I'd suggest at least 3 weeks here. Our cuisines are endless and varies from one state to the next.

    Watching 10 mins in,
    1. glad to see you can take spiciness! you'll be fine if you ever visit Malaysia.
    2. the color of the nasi lemak doesn't look right to me tbh, and the sambal is likely catered to the local's tastebuds hence it's sweet instead of spicy hehe
    3. I like how you dipped the fried chicken into the laksa broth. Us Malaysians LOVE it when you enjoy food.
    4. My-low, Mee-low.. doesn't matter to us, we know what drink you're talking about 😃
    5. "Nasi" means rice, and "goreng" means fried. Then kpg is short for "kampung". "Mee" = noodles. so your first dish is nasi goreng kampung = village fried rice.
    6. you can also opt not to squeeze the lemon. I usually only squeeze it when I feel the laksa flavour is beginning to overwhelm, and i squeeze the lemon it to get a more refreshing taste.
Hope you can visit Malaysia one day. We have many staples, and you can go for the popular ones to establish a baseline (Village Park Nasi Lemak, myBurgerLab, Nirwana Maju etc), but start in KL because other states are a totally diff story. I would suggest visiting the capital first then move on to visit other states.
For references, you can watch many many foreign youtubers' take on Malaysian food.
e.g. Blimey (Korean), iChang (Japanese)--they love our food so much they cook it when they're not in Malaysia❣
we welcome you and hope you would do that one day too ^^

You should try eating Malaysian food the Malaysian way, we don't use spoon or fork most of the times and some say eating by hands make the food tastier (with exception to Mee Curry, Laksa, or most noodles with a lot of gravy mixed in) and much more enjoyable. You basically scoop the rice by posing your right hand fingers into sort of like a duck's mouth, maybe you can look it up online on how we do it, if by any chance you plan on eating Malaysian food next time. Really enjoyed your reaction on our food, simple and straightforward, honest, with a lil bit of humor here and there, keep it up man!

Nasi goreng KPG (KPG-Kampung) is Malay style fried rice, normally with fried anchovies, water spinach and chili. sometime some people will add some chicken. Milo is chocomalt drink in case you don't know. Nasi lemak the chili must eat with chili-(sambal) the rice, anchovies and peanut is crispy element, the boil egg can help you reduce the spiciness from the sambal, the cucumber is to refresh your mouth because nasi lemak is quite strong in smell. the nasi lemak sambal (the chili) it should be sweet and spicy, depend what type of chili they use, the spiciness is kick in afterward.

Beef rendang you have to cook for about 8 hours before serving it which is why it's always very tender. And we usually have it on occasion like the Ramadhan. Pair it with some sticky rice omggg.

We used to have smaller version (coz it's supposed to be small meal for breakfast) rich nasi lemak served in banana leaf. And the sambal was spicy, and was served together with freshly cut cucumber, anchovies, roasted nuts, egg by the rice, no extra small plate needed. And then can choose whether want chicken, prawn, or squid. I love squids the most. Need to go into old folks stall to taste the best. The town or city version can't compare.

What I love to do with Nasi Lemak is to take out the yolk from a boiled egg and then I mix it in with the rice and its just woah. But that's just me hehe

mans got his priorities right! looking for a good spicy, flavourful sambal. and i would say, the way mans ate the malaysian food, all of which has no right or wrong way , just mix this and that , mans got it right. mad props for the good content. if given the opportunity, should try malaysian streetfood, like karipap, karipap sardin, cakoi, chee cheong fun and various cakes ( known as kuih in Malaysia).

As reference, mee = noodle, usually the yellow colored one, and nasi = rice. Watching this as I eat my curry maggi mee at 11pm.. really is the time to head over to a mamak and order a plate of nasi lemak and roti canai 😂 Thank you for your review, and I hope you'd have the chance to sample more Malaysian food in the future!

When eating nasi lemak, i usually take some chicken, nuts n rice mix with sambal and chomp em together. Sambal is the soul of nasi lemak, the flavor enhancer.

I always prefer mix up all the sambal with the rice for the Nasi Lemak. And no worry dude. You will find the sambal at Malaysia here hot enough as we use to eat spicy food. There's few more type of Laksa as well. Beansprout Steam Chicken, Satay Jerloot, fancy ice desserts like Ice Kacang, well known of warm desserts like Buburcaca etc.
