  • Today I'm testing out the Selah flavored water bottle (pronounced "sella" per the company). I test and rank all 10 flavors and ponder how it might fare against the Cirkul.

      That's why I have an Epson Ecotank. You just fill the tanks with more ink when you need it. The off brand ink made by Koala only cost 10-15 dollars for all the colors. Black ink can be purchased separately really cheap. Basically, the average user won't spend more than 10 dollars a year on ink. I'm above average printing around 500 custom, colored Christmas cards each year, which is why I bought it, and still don't spend more than 20 dollars of ink a year. You can flush the ink, and put in other types of ink, but that's for advanced, fabric users, which doesn't apply to most people.
      Epson is like the Kool-aid pitcher of printers, and you just fill it with whatever flavor packets and water you want.

    The thing that makes the Selah make no sense to me is that it just squirts the flavoring into the water and flavors the whole amount of water in the bottle. Which means... why tf even have a fancy bottle and dispensing system and special pods...? There's no difference between this and if they just sold little squeeze bottles of their flavoring that you could squirt into any bottle or cup. It's just MiO etc but with a convoluted delivery system to get it into the water. Everything about this system is redundant and needless other than the flavoring liquid in the pods. The only thing that makes the Cirkul _slightly_ less needless is that you can freely adjust how much flavor you get at any point if you want I guess. I've also heard people say the Cirkul cap fits on other insulated bottles etc so there's that I guess. This Selah thing doesn't even have that one small advantage though, and is literally just selling a fancy bottle so that you have use their flavor ecosystem and their bottles that don't actually do anything. If those flavor pods were little squeeze bottles instead, this whole system literally becomes irrelevant, because all it does is squirt flavor into a bottle of water in an overly-complex way.
    Just to illustrate what I'm trying to say: *He just poured all of the flavored water samples into cups to drink later because it is the same outside of the bottle...*
    The bottle is entirely pointless after using it to squirt the flavor in. There's 0 reason for it to be in that bottle. If those pods were squeeze bottles MiO or packets like Crystal Light those cups of water would be exactly the same as they are after pouring them out of the Selah bottle. The bottle system _doesn't actually do anything._

    • @J.Hill49
      @J.Hill49 2 месяца назад +2

      100% agree and the fact that if you added too much flavor you're screwed until you're able to add more water to balance it out or you're having to pour the flavored water out to make room for fresh water. Doesn't seem very efficient to me.

    • @brianlawson3757
      @brianlawson3757 2 месяца назад +1

      Yeah, I was just about to say the same. If keeping up with that tiny squirt bottle of MiO is too much trouble, you're going to hate this thing. Not everything has to be complicated and look like it came out of a sci-fi movie by Stanley Kubric. Honestly, these pod systems for drinks and coffee products can't be good for the environment, either. It's just a subscription based product designed to keep you buying their pods like Kuerieg, or the Juicero which folded in no time. I think I remember that thing costing several hundred dollars and didn't even work correctly. At home I just toss lime wheels, cucumber slices, and a pinch of sea salt into a jug and shake it up. Flavored water...done, and no weird chemical aftertaste.

When the flavor that came with my bottle ran out I just disassembled the cartridge and kept the top part. Now it functions like a normal water bottle and it holds a little bit more water without the bottom part on it. Two things about the Selah: it's harder to toy with the level of flavoring. If you add too much, then you are stuck with that unless you dump it out or dilute it with more water. With the Cirkul, the dial is easier to adjust since it doesn't add the flavoring until you actually drink the water. If it's too strong, you can just dial it back down. Also, if you really wanted you, you can refill the cirkul pods on your own. You can separate the pieces, add in your own flavoring (I usually use those mio pods), and then put it back together. That saves you quite a bit of money in the long run. In the end, for me, it comes down to the variety of flavors and how well those flavors taste that decides which one comes out on top.

  • @JBIRDRN8

    My son and his family have the Cirkul and they love it. He said that the flavor is not injected into the water, but you taste the flavors when you take a drink. He said that he can refill the flavor section with those little Fuel squirt flavor drops bottles or any other brand even sugar free so he saves a lot on the flavor pods: this one looks good, but def more complicated to use and it doesn’t look like you can refill it with your own flavors.

But, I like that I can just pop a few of the little cubes into my purse or pocket and drop them in a bottle of generic bottled water anytime I want. The cubes can be a little on the expensive side, usually around $11-13 for a box of twelve, but I have found them on other sites for closer to $9, and I really enjoy the convenience and the flavors, so it is worth it to me. How is the mouth feel though, the issue with a lot of flavor enhancers especially crikul is that it often made your mouth feel quite dry after drinking it.
    do you also get any of the artificial sweetener after taste?

    I have the cirkul bottle. I use to have the sleeve on mine too. I noticed with the sleeve on and if I didn’t like rinse or wash out my bottle just refill it with water it would get this clear slime on the inside. So I just bleach it out rinse it really good every time now and it will still work. My favorite number is 4. With 4 I get at least 3 refills on that then I turn it all the way up and get another 3 bottles of water out of it for a total of 6. It’s the only way I’ll drink water now.

    It sounds like if Selah put a squirt top on their flavor pods, that they could do away with the special water bottle and you could flavor any amount you wanted, drinking out of your favorite cup or one of the water bottles you already own. Thanks for the review James.

    The cirkul lid will fit on most steel water bottles The plastic bottles wont stay cold for very long. Yes you can refil the cirkul pods your self, You tube will show you how. I am sure the selah last twice as long as the Cirlul, but it uses two pods instead of one. The pods for the cirkul can be cheeper if you use a monthly subscription. Just cant see how the selah is a better option than the cirkul. I dont want to have to use two pods and try and guess which flavors go wtih wich flavors.

    It's a cool concept. Don't even have to mix flavors, can double up on one flavor to have more flavor capacity. But I'm mostly looking at how much electrolytes it's giving and it doesn't seem to give as much compared to what Body Armor can do. Really important I get enough electrolytes in my body with summer coming up or something can go wrong at the wrong time when I work outside.

      Yeah the bottle isn't actually doing anything in this system. It's just squirting the syrup into the water. After you do that you could just pour the water into something else and drink it, so this whole thing is pointless lol. You might as well just buy something like MiO so you can put it in anything you want.

    What I'm wondering is why I need a special water bottle in order to inject flavoring into my water. They could just sell the flavoring like MIO and it would do the same thing. I could also use whatever water bottle I want instead of their fancy pod water bottle.

    Personally I haven’t tried this but I like my cirkul. I don’t like plain water and those flavor enhancing drops taste weird to me like crystal light etc. I got my mom and nephew on the cirkul as well. The cartridges last at least a week for me if not longer but I try to start the flavor on a 2 or 3 and just work my way up when it loses the flavor. The only thing I don’t like about it is my nephew seems to go through them quickly even though when I take it apart the cartridge will still be full. I think there’s something about the way he drinks from the bottle like not turning it upside down enough. Also I recently found mold in the colored part of the lid so now I check it every day instead of once a week.

    I bought the cirkul after your review a year or so ago. Then Walmart started to sell them so it was very easy to just buy the replacements. My last three I hated. I don't know what happened. But it was hard to suck? The water and the flavor out of the replacements. I don't know they did something different so I discard the bottle at times. Then I had to throw out the thing after 1 or less of uses. So I'm wasting my money . I might try this out. I just like try new things out like you do. Just not getting paid for it lol

    I received a Cirkul as a gift and while it was novel, it's far from perfect. The thing dribbles water from the drinking spout constantly, meaning your desk, or your clothes end up getting soiled. I like my water ice cold, but Cirkul can't handle the temp change without wetting itself. I might have to try this Selah although I'm resisting the urge to spend even more money on something that's been around for years. I'll probably go back to a good vacuum insulated tumbler or "Coldest" bottle and the pre-packaged flavors.

    Good work James, other than I will add that the Cirkul wins on capability. Having standard size top makes it so nice, I can throw the Cirkul top on any size Hydroflask or any other bottle. I've become addicted to carbonated water. I just fill up my SodaStream with filtered water and carbonate it. I'll add some lemon or lime and drink that. I've bought a few shaved ice concentrate non-sweetened soda flavors that you mix with sugar water but it's honestly not even necessary. And I used to be a big soda drinker! I think the best option is just to get root beer extract for like a buck. And then I refill the CO2 canister with dry ice that I run through my food processor, but that requires a bench vice to close up tight.

    I actually use a regular water bottle and I put in about 50 drops of peppermint extract because I like my water to be minty and there's no sugar. I don't really like my water to be sweet but I do like it to be minty and I think it's better when it's not cold and just room temperature because the peppermint actually cools the water. I think it's much more refreshing than regular water and I use it with spring water. I just decided to try it one day and ever since then I've been hooked. There are other waters that are flavored naturally that are really good and there are no sugar added and no colors added and it's called hint water. My favorite flavor of that one is the crisp apple which is more like a green apple flavor and then I also like the kiwi strawberry and the peach. So I would rather drink something like that then have to deal with something that contains stevia which I think is way too sweet or an artificial sweetener like sucralose which is very controversial whether or not it makes you sick.

    Thanks for your review. I always trust your reviews and most of the time, I agree with them. This time I do not agree with you though. I have the Cirkul. One of my favorite things about the Cirkul is that the water does not get flavored until you drink it. I can refill my bottle halfway through, and it won't dilute my drink. I also like that as my ice melts, it does not dilute my drink. I can also, drink just plain water while still having the Cirkul flavor capsule inserted.(I do that often) I also like that Cirkul sells insulated stainless steel bottles and that the CIrkul lid also fits many other brands of stainless steel bottles. Enjoy your Selah and keep the great reviews coming. Thanks!

    In the UK you can buy a concentrated cordial or squash as we call it, it comes in a little bottle and has 20 servings and cost a mere £1.49, so thats 7 ½ pence per serving. No expensive bottle needed, the obviously made it so you NEED the syrup as the bottle is useless without it.

  • @Eric_G65

    I haven't used the Selah but I do own and use the Cirkul. I completely disagree about how long the cartridges last. Even the worst cartridge will last at least 4 complete bottle fill ups for me. If they're not lasting that long for you then you must prefer it a lot stronger than I do. When I first insert the cartridge, I generally set the flavor level to 3 on the Cirkul and increase it the more I use it. I don't know why it's not consistent with the flavor but I have gotten over 9 full refills and still had flavor on some cartridges. Also, the Cirkul cartridges are way cheaper, especially when you order about 5 at a time because they're discounted at that quantity and free shipping. I think they are about $3.75 each at that point. There are also more flavors. I do like the idea that you can mix them and make your own flavor but they have so many choices, it's not necessary. As far as your mold concern, I am pretty sure, that's almost impossible in the short time the cartridges last. I will say, I have noticed that over time there is some debris that forms around the outer threads of the bottle so I definitely clean it after about every other cartridge replacement. I agree about Sucralose, I am not sure why they call it no artificial flavors when most flavors have Sucralose. Then again, I really don't like their flavors with Stevia, it just doesn't taste good in their product. I have had other things with Stevia that taste fine but not with their drinks. Sucralose is a perfectly safe sweetener and actually has a slight laxative effect so it might aid slightly in losing weight.

    With cirkul, I typically get 5-6 bottle refills before my pod is empty. I think you put it on a setting and try to leave it there as you drink, you need to turn it up when it starts to fade to keep the flavor going (because of the way it dispenses). You're probably throwing out tons of flavoring and don't realize it.

    I always wonder, do other countries not have syrup concentrates to put in a regular bottle? Like lemonade, in The Netherlands you can buy a huge variety of flavors of concentrates, with sugar or without, with fruit, added flavorings etc that you just add to water in a bottle. It seems way cheaper than buying a separate system.

You also said about 12 drinks per pod. with everything you've done, it sounds like the cost per dink goes up and the amount of drinks per pod is reduced. is it more reasonable to say it's closer to $1.20 to $2.00 per drink? I’m filling my bottle up several times over in a day. I can go through 3 pods a day. But I subscribe and for about 3.00 each. It’s better than code red mt dew! If the pods seem to empty out quickly I let the company know. They send. Me 1-2 free pods. Just looking at that bottle looks like it’s gonna break. If my bottle breaks I can buy a similar bottle the cap can fit on. Or just buy a cap! And use on the bottle you have. It’s going to take a lot to make me give up my cirkul. Thank you for being a honest, reviewer!!

    I’m autistic and sometimes it’s hard for me to get plain water in. I don’t like the plastic waste or cartridge cost, but I absolutely love the Cirkul because the form factor does good things to my brain (like a tactile version of what ASMR does to some people), both in the action of drinking and the feeling in the hands. The flavors are hit and miss but finding good ones is relatively easy. And I can swap cartridges and save them in the fridge super easy if I can’t deal with a flavor I liked yesterday- I’m sure other autistic folks run into that too. Being able to adjust my flavor level to what my brain wants that day is unbelievably nice. The Cirkul feels like it was designed by someone who needed to get water into a disabled person but had the good financial sense to market it to rich yuppies instead of us.
    The Selah looks like it removed all the features that make the Cirkul nice, convenient, and good for extreme niche use cases like mine and went all in on the predatory cartridges. It’s no different than a normal bottle with crystal light except with more moving parts.
