@Ellis Dee Sure but I think we can all agree it is very unfinished without something in that center cavity. I think its fine to put it back but something special needs to be done. a custom paint job on the airbag cover etc.
I have a toyota echo 2001 whose wheels have covers made out of some foam(or flexible rubber) that is attached to the steel rim. after hitting a wooden box, one of the wheels got badly damage. Since its been impossible to find a replacement I had to use a conventional steel rim with no cover. I was wondering how to reproduce the original cover, either using urethane foam or other type of polymer that can have a smooth finish
This was very informative. Could you tell me how to "fatten up" an existing steering wheel? I want to leather wrap an original 1968 steering wheel but the wheel part is very thin from the factory.
I think the back of the steering wheel where it sits on the hub is centering it. Can't explain it properly, but if you watch closely how the mold is made you'll see it.
Very informative! I personally don't want such an ugly steering wheel in my car, but you did a great job explaining the steps and shows the craftmanship of your work.
Hi Milo! I really enjoy watching your videos. I have a project that I have been planning to do using smooth-on products and watching your videos to learn how to do what I want. I have a 1999 Camaro and want to create my own modern-looking LED taillights. My plan is use my stock taillight housing to develop a mold that I can use to create a new housing that will work better with my idea for the LED’s. I also plan to separate the lenses and create new ones using your video of the yellow lenses you created. Would you be able to create a video showing how to mold and create a taillight housing that shows what smooth-on products would be best to create the mold and the housing, as well as the best method for producing the mold (e.g. vacuum or pressure). My idea for the new housing is to keep the basic shape of the taillight and the screw posts that mount it to the vehicle, but removing the exterior convex/interior concave of the taillights and flatten them out for LED strips. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding my request! Thank you for your videos and I look forward to seeing more of them!
Very impressive. Wouldn’t the fill cavity had been better on the bottom of the steering wheel to hide any imperfections after you remove the excess casting?
So we have to buy a pressure pot to make the mold, and a vacuum pot for the pour, plus materials?Damn! What's this wheel gonna cost, even though it's neat as hell?Is the final product hard,or "grippy",like rubber? It looks hard. Are there other materials or additives that can make it more like rubber?
I recommend contacting Smooth-On Customer Service at (800) 762-0744 or visiting their website for more information on purchasing a steering wheel mold.
What material do you suggest for casting a steering wheel and replicating the oem p.u. foam? Can a more rigid rubber be used? Also, How about to keep it a black uv safe pigment? (Instead of upholstery the wheel later on)

i've never done any of this, but just based on videos i've watched over time and the quality of materials used and used professionally, i would *guess* at least 50 castings. i'm just throwing that number out there for ya because just about any 'answer' is vague, like 'more complex moulds don't last as long.' that answer doesn't help any more than the other thing they always say, 'properly stored, a mould made from xxx should last xx years.'
