the danger of this video is the craftsmanship is so incredibly high and attention to detail so thorough, it actually manages to make this look easy. The patience and skill this takes is next level. I've been making wheels and now sim wheels for a while and this makes my heart happy. well done !
A lot of prep work just to make the mold for the steering wheel, but required with great attention to details. Outstanding presentation. Somebody said in the comments, a nice Sunday afternoon project, he has no idea it requires days, not hours to perform this type of work.
dude... i've had an acrylic wheel thats been cracked for 8+ years that i've always wanted to repair. This gives me so much hope. Thank you for the video.
For the epoxy plug, you could have cut the container to height and hot glued it to the plywood and poured the epoxy in through a small hole at the top. That would eliminate the need to epoxy it to the plywood after it's cast and wait another 24 hours for that to cure.
I love how just about ANY project - silicone mold making or not - ANY project around the house often begins with "first we need to cut up some plywood."
Am I the only one that thinks that was insanely labor intensive? I don't think I want anything that bad. Just saying. But GR8T Job. You RoCk! Thumbs up! (does that get me off the hook?)
Thanks for watching. It is labor intensive however Milo is a master at what he does and this is the process that it takes to make a lot of things that you or I interact with daily.
Excellent video, thank you! Could you tell me how much silicone was needed per side? Looks to be a few gallons. I'm looking to do this but I can't believe the price of that silicone!!! Yikes.
Daniel, there are other ways to do this that would save some rubber. Can you send us a tech ticket? Our team can help you - www.smooth-on.com/support/ticket/add/agree/
How about making electrical connectors for automotive wiring? The actual wire portion uses standard connections but many are set together in a larger connector.
Why did you have to use the fiber glass? Is it just because yo wanted to save the silicone that you would otherwise use when trying to completely fill the mold to the highest part?
I need to have a vintage steering wheel mold made This is a great video but I think it's too much for me. Do you know of anyone's that can do this for me?
Great job on this one. I have learned a lot by watching your videos but I surely would have put the pour spout on the bottom of the steering wheel. There is less chance for it to be visible even after cleanup.
This is for people that are running a business for production. There are easier diy video to learn. I make carbon steering wheels from scratch at home with about 150$ material and they value for $800.00-$1200.00 all day long.
But is this safe to use? I feel like in an accident, sudden stop, times where the wheel locks up or gets forcibly turned, and other times where the wheel experiences stress, it seems this would break.
Why would it break? It's the same core that was originally there from the factory. It's like changing the door panel them claiming the door itself is unsafe
Lol, this was just a video on how to make the mold. ..to use to make the steering wheel. ...he will be using different materials to make the actual steering wheel and recycle the hub if I'm not mistaken. ..
Thanks for watching bluspirit81. We do not provide moldmaking services, but we do have a list of moldmakers on our website: www.smooth-on.com/moldmaker/

Do you make carbon fiber parts?
I love how just about ANY project - silicone mold making or not - ANY project around the house often begins with "first we need to cut up some plywood."
We use a lot of it around here.
how much silicon was used to make the mold? wanting to replicate this process for my own wheel?
This is something I've always wanted to do. Absolutely amazing! Do you guys offer any in person classes?

Now someone should show this video to west coast customs. The guy had to do it three times.
09:40 Is there no vacuum de-gassing of the silicone?
Mold Star 30 requires no degassing.
How many months did you spend making that mold?

You're welcome 😊
Good job! Shoot please how using TASK 8😇
Why did you have to use the fiber glass? Is it just because yo wanted to save the silicone that you would otherwise use when trying to completely fill the mold to the highest part?
Correct, creating this type of mold with the support shell saves on silicone used.

can i use plasticine with this moldstar 30? cant find any oil base clay....
As long as the clay is free from sulfur, then yes.
Is that a MKV GTI steering wheel?
Where can I purchase the material for EU Bulgaria thanks
Thanks for watching Metodi Veselinov. You can find a full list of Smooth-On distributors here - www.smooth-on.com/distributors/
why did we do the fiberglass part?
To maintain the dimensions of the final casting.
An after market wheel is safer i think. My opinion.
But is this safe to use? I feel like in an accident, sudden stop, times where the wheel locks up or gets forcibly turned, and other times where the wheel experiences stress, it seems this would break.
