Dostoevsky visited his soldier brother in Tallinn in 1843, 1845 and 1846. The sailing events actually took place at Pirita, which is over on the far right side when you look at the sea from your location in the video. The Linnahall building where you're at was built as an ice rink and a concert hall loosely related to the Olympic sailing regatta.
Hello! I live in Tallinn. When I watch your videos I always think if you would visit Baltic and Estonia, big was my surprise when you uploaded a video from my hometown. Thank you! As I watch your videos, I have noticed that many countries you visit, were more prosperous under the Soviet Union. So the people living there say that things were better back in the Soviet Union, now its just abandoned buildings. Well, in Estonia there are different opinions about Soviet Union, but overall we don't think kindly about Soviet Estonia. We are proud about our independence and Estonian Republic (1918-1939, 1991-present). My great-grandfather was arrested by Soviet Union, sent to Saransk, where he was murdered in 1942, because he was quite an important military figure in the first republic. My father despise everything to do with Soviet Union, because he was in Soviet army and life there was very rough and hard. But older people have said, that it wasn't that bad living under Soviet Union (there was free healthcare etc). In school we are taught about Soviet Union's oppression, so the younger generation have probably negative emotions about the Union. Most of us don't miss/like the Soviet Union, but like I said opinions differ, you can find some sympathetic people about Soviet Union in the older generation (maybe 60 and up). Your videos have shown me, that not all previous Member States have that kind of opinion about the Union and I can see why. So thank you for broadening my knowledge! About the architecture, you went to the Old Town, which is mostly preserved from Middle Ages and was protected even in Soviet times. If you want to find Soviet architecture in Tallinn you have to go to Lasnamäe or Mustamäe (they are districts of Tallinn), which were built in Soviet times and most houses are from that time. This is common Estonian winter and we are used to it, but as you have experienced yourself, the icy stairs and roads are brutal to everyone, so be careful. I hope your hamstring will heal soon. By the way, my father played in a band in 1980 during the Moscow Olympics in Tallinn near the Linnahall (the monstrosity you climbed on). All in all, I am very happy that you visited my country and even hometown. Keep up the excellent work and hope to see your videos about Estonia and Baltics! Killu
Funny thing is, you actually can't call "Linnahall" a soviet building. Yes, it was built in the 80s under USSR regime, but architects of that building were estonians and estonians also built it, it's not even soviet architecture. Bald uses too much word "soviet", and often in a wrong context.
@@peeterl.2016 It's a buzz/trigger word foreigners love to use, besides more often than not being a former part of the USSR is the only thing Westerners know about Estonia, so they cling on to that single factoid for dear life.

Bald! From one bald and beautiful man to another, you are hands down my favorite youtuber! You have inspired this Yankee to start learning Russian to start my international travels in Europe! Also, perhaps you should start doing some stretches before climbing snowy stairs!!! Cheers!
Good luck with the Russian in Europe!
@@beorlingo hush!!! Haha! I know my continents! I should have said "Europe and Asia". Way to call me out!
Beautiful journalism with love and lol hamstring..the snowman eyes harold was legendary...
That building is Linnahall. Its where the intro scene to Tenet was filmed.
I love your new channel, give me some Bald everyday! Especially now with corona quarantiane it's nice you show us some other places
A week later and he's walking 10 Km in the snow and freezing cold from Viivikonna back to civilization, and it's no big deal. I'm telling you, you can't kill this guy or even put a dent in him.
Nice to see you again!!! I haven’t see any of my three amigos for awhile ❤️❤️❤️. It kind of looks like where I live in NH. Long brutal winters. Stay safe! Ive been watching Dan Sheekoz you have me addicted to Russia😂
When he said "new Tallinn..." I thought he was going to die right there.
it is so generic :(
@@ligametis Better than soviet Tallinn.
@@jaanus4568 I like Soviet Tallinn more than modern one. It is so boring, myself living in Vilnius disappointed that Soviet heritage is demolished to build new glass towers and boxes.
@@ligametis Okay so you say you don't like glass towers and boxes but you like concrete towers and soviet boxes and copy paste buildings? Pretty shit taste if you ask me.
Hope þhe ankle injury was not serious Mr Bald as your videos are all so entertaining no matter the weather or what country you are!!
“How do people live here in Estonia?” Clearly this man forgot about Bolivia very quickly
Was the weather in Bolivia worse?
@@taekatanahu635 no I’m not sure what he was talking about the weather was sunny
In the Tallinn main Square, in summer, with all the restaurants spilling out onto the cobbles - most blissful holiday I ever had. Keep going Mr Bald. Bankruptcy seems to have deserted you!
Tere tulemast. Was actually wondering, when you would come to estonia. Cheers

Had to check this channel out from the link you just posted. Came, saw and subscribed. Cheers!
"Oh please don't kill me Soviet steps Im just a young hombre lookin for adventure"
Love your work bro!!! Your video are addictive. Keep it up mate
These steps were my first Soviet experience. I remember being on a tour, which ended at that structure. After enjoying the old town, I was so fascinated to discover the structure, and went back there 2 more times during my trip . I don’t know what it is about seeing something Soviet, maybe because it’s a reminder of the superpower that suddenly collapsed just 30 years ago. I understand you bald
i mean it's a badass building even without the history i think
@@hhelina I thought the structure itself was pretty unremarkable. In my view, It’s the nostalgia that gives it the appeal
Interesting. Ostalgia of foreigners. I don't have it, i was born in independent Estonia and my memories of it are a place where i used to see all the musicals and went skating every spring with school until it closed 2008. Occasionally hung out with friends outside there and enjoyed the view. Now sometimes go swimming directly to the east of the building. But yeah i like the structure
@@hhelina I guess it means something different to do, understandable given how you saw it still full of life. I thought Estonia itself looked like it was doing well with a prosperous future ahead of it.
Mr Bald, Thank you for making a new series of videos for us . We love your journeys ❤️ Gosh you hurt your leg ? Take care . 🥰
You should make more videos in Estonia!
There aren't many things to film with a Soviet vibe, it's just another western European country
@@rogerthat3157 Yeah we got rid of most soviet things. We are not very fond of soviet.
@@rogerthat3157 I know, but he doesn’t need to only look at Soviet stuff. He’s been to other places that have no Soviet architecture
Bald I think you’ve sold me on Tallin. I was applying to internships/jobs there before the pandemic started. I’ve been debating ever since, but this video settled it - what a beautiful country!
1:38 special appearance by Harald Baldr.
Benjamin we are from Kent and have binged watched your videos during lockdown.
Come to Lithuania! Would love to see you here 😊
I don't think he will be able to travel between cities there.
@@PeopleCanFly23 yes he wouldn't now but in future it would be okay
@@TheLostBrit you can cross the border if you have legit reasons for instance booked a hotel in other city and going there for work and etc
@@AnzJammin Yes but we can't travel anywhere in Lithuania now so he could only go to one place and then nowhere else (legally)
Dude you seem to follow me... first Minsk, now Tallinn... so great to see that awesome little town completely covered in snow!
imagine looking out your window and see a bald man scramble up some steps whilst talking to a camera 😂
woud be funnier to see fat man doing it🤣
Always enjoy your videos. Good to see other parts of the world from your prospective. Thanks...
Thanks for not dying on the steps of Tallinn!
It's cool you seem to appreciate even the smallest thing, need more of that these days
Yeah, hard to find anything "Soviet" in a Medieval City :P
If you are obsessed enough like Bald seems to be, you'll find some.
He thought that Tallinn is named after Stalinn ? He Didnt Read the History ?
Finally you are here! Welcome from Estonia mate🇪🇪!
Come to Finland! Not much soviet things here though (thank god)
Lots of memorials along the border though
@@fletch397 and bunch of bunkers of Salpalinja on the eastern line. Those are not soviet either.
There aren't many soviet buildings in Estonia as well, yet he went there
Obviously there is 0 Soviet influence in Finland but there is quite a bit of Russian influence from being part of the Russian Empire.
Who knows, maybe Bald will find Kekkoslovakian architecture interesting because everyone else loathes it. 😆
Funny video Bald. The Harald Baldr joke was a good one too 😂
In the next Video: "Welcome to Soviet East Germany".
Awesome to see you walk the streets of a town I visited not too long ago. 👍👍 Loved Tallinn!
You are so close please come to Finland!!❤️
Finland was once part of the Russian Empire, but never part of the Soviet Union.
@@Sunlight91 Sure, Finland was never Soviet, but there is still history regarding the Soviets here. He could visit eastern Finland along with the old Finland/Soviet border and former Finnish territories from the Russia side for example. Also if he will not visit Finland, he can visit the Karelian republic, home to our closest relatives, the Karelians.
Wow! What a treat! My favourite RUclipsr in my homecountry.
