  • Its not every day that you are first out of the door at the Aiguille du Midi, let alone first out of the station and down the arete on a bluebird powder day! This Sunday was one of those special moments where the clouds departed and the planets aligned, where we were left with a blank canvas on which to paint our masterpieces! Our line of choice was the Grand Envers, the most challenging and technical of the 'classic' descents of the Vallee Blanche, taking the Midi-Plan arete right along its crest, before descending on the Glacier d'Envers du Plan and on to the Refuge du Requin. From there you have two choices, tackle the steep exit couloirs below the refuge, or head to the Salle a manger and rejoin the Classic route. We opted to join the Classic route as the exit couloirs had previously been stripped bare by the warm dry second half to the winter, making them potentially impassable. By this point, people on the other itineraries had caught up, leaving us with a nice easy cruise along the tracks back to the Grote de Glace and Montenvers.

    Amazing video! I wish to do the Vallee Blanche one day.
    I noticed that in the top section you sometimes chose to ski on the icy parts where the top layer of snow had broken away already , the soft snow next to it looked much more appealing of course but was this for avalanche safety precaution? cheers!

      @chamonixskibum  2 года назад

      even if skiing to the side, you would still be skiing on the firm snow underneath, the powder was only thin and soft on those sections, so it wouldnt make a difference

      @@chamonixskibum ah ok, makes sense. I’ll be returning to chamonix to do the vallee blanche at some point. When is the best time to do it? I’m presuming you’ve done it many times

      @@SamFullick generally march-april time. the later the better as the crevasses will be more filled in. you just want to make sure you do it before the snow has completely gone from the bottom, its a delicate balancing act!

    Crazy to see how the crossing has changed since the 90s - so it has safety ropes now? That's cool!
    The day I did the Vallee we had incredible fresh power at the top but the lower glacier was really lacking in snow - man that hard ice really went to town on my brand new Burton Supermodel 62. So sad! lol.
    Awesome day though - what a place to ski/ride.

      it depends what time of year you do it, but i am pretty sure there has been handrails on the arete at peak winter season for decades, you can still see the old wooden stakes sticking out of the ice now!
      as for the line, this is the grand envers itinery, it is the most challenging of the standard lines, and goes way left of the classic line

      @@chamonixskibum When I did it (late 90s) there were no ropes on the first section if I remember rightly - It's a long time ago so happy to accept I might have just forgotten!

    Nice ride !!! 👍Why using the cable car to go down to Chamonix instead of skiing down ? The track from les Mottets wasn't in good condition ?

      @@RatrackSnowDozer not enough snow. it was only a cosmetic dusting down as low as montenvers. by that point in the season the base had largely gone below 2000m

    Sketchy avalanche danger there

      Only on that 1 aspect where the two steeper pitches were, but they had safe run outs and were only short faces, so you could easily out run your sluff.
