The cartoonish blood and violence of the first Mortal Kombat was subversive and controversial for its time, but I gotta say that staring at people being turned into living fruit gushers has gotten more and more nauseating as the graphics get more realistic.
Really, the big thing is that it's gotten less and less interesting. Fatalities haven't advanced because the only thing the devs have given them is shock value. MK tends to have a similar problem that sonic the hedgehog has. They’ll have some good ideas here and there but the execution isn’t always excellent. Not because I'm a fan boy who wants them to go back to it or something, I just think treating it like Voldemort makes it even more awkward.
Both of them never actually have any problem with people talking about the old channel. Its a major part of their brand and career. The only issue is when people are being weird about it, like asking for a reunion, or how they missed "the good old days when everyone were still best friends" or other stupid shit. People just tend do be inconsiderate tactless parasocial jackasses whenever that topic comes up.

Seeing Woolie try to come to grips with and try to undermine Pat's defenses was like the best kind of schlocky anime battle. @CS Terra Kotal gets too hate, he’s cool character they just chickened and brought Shao Khan back to job him. Which is dumb when they just have Shao Khan job too.
I kinda like MK, but my absolute biggest gripe with it is that they fill the roster with a large amount of zoners, but then make the zoning really really really boring. Projectiles cannot interact with each other unless they are specifically coded to do so. Most projectiles are just going from left to right with nothing special about them. There is just no cool counterplay surrounding it.
As someone who gravitates towards zoners, I 100% agree. I like zoners to be crazy like Dizzy, the Murakumos and JP. NRS zoners have always looked lame as hell.
I, like Pat, fail to see the value in a hyper violent spectacle that doesnt deliver in any other department as far as enjoying a video game is concerned. Always felt that way... MK 9 was mad fun tho imo
I mean there’s good stuff in there, Mileena’s ending in 11 is legitimately heartwarming but that’s tiny part of a bloated generic mess. People made fun of the Deception era shit but at least it was trying something new.

Pat just listed every reason why I don't want NRS to handle this rumored Marvel/ Marvel vs DC fighting game. The disappointment I felt with MVC:I infinite would just be magnified x10.
My main issue with the MK games is that 11 felt like a downgrade from MKX in gameplay and that’s what assuredly we’re all here for. MKX had complexity and depth because of the resources being tied to offence and defence, if you got hit you had to choose to spend 2 bars, sacrifice potential okizeme and damage for a breakaway or ride it out and trust in your defence plus the run gauge gave you more explosive offence and another thing to manage, more management - more depth. MK11 split those resources into offence and defence and there’s no real decision or sacrifice to be made there, if you get hit spend your bar, it comes back on its own anyway, you don’t have to pick and choose your pokes to earn bar. On a purely personal level I’d also say the variations worked better in MKX. Shirai Ryu Takeda is a different character from his laser sword variant or Hellfire Scorpion vs Ninjutsu they’re so clearly different and distinct, the roster feels like it’s triple the size that it is. I know I’m biased and I sound like a Melee player complaining about Brawl cause it’s different but honestly I still go back to MKX, I haven’t touched MK11 since before aftermath
@@li-limandragon9287And making a giant plot hole by making a character secretly evil just because she looks evil. By 11’s logic Earthrealm should’ve been under Shao Khan’s control ages ago. While Sindel’s pretty background character wise, the things she’s done in lore are huge.
Pat’s argument for characters like Hsu Hao is a perfect reason why they should put them in newer games I do also want to add that yeah, the gore is the broad appeal of the games for a large majority of fans. To someone who has been a fan since Deception, the characters and lore are what made Mortal Kombat for me
I've said it before but as an MK fanboy the problem with MK Vs DC wasn't the lack of violence, I was that it played terrible and the finishers were uncreative. It is funny to me how much hate MK gets from the "tradition FGC" scene when it is the most popular FG bar none. I honestly feel like a lot of "purists" just hate anything that isn't structured off the backbone that SF started with and are salty that MK is massively successful with a casual audience over SF and other Japanese fighting games. Yeah it is dumb, but I like it. It is easier to just get angry and hate things than engage with it on an earnest level.
It's not the factor of like oh it's popular and they hate it it's more just fatigue sure we'll get somewhat better gameplay I guess I hope the story probably might be stupid but the ones in the mortal Kombat is known for is fatalities and that's it
it's not salt, it's just not a good fighting game. The original gameplay was based on digitized photos which made the gameplay very stilted and each character had the same normal attacks with only different special moves . Not only that but all the characters were the same size, same speed, and jumped the same. Street Fighter 2 had various fighters each with a distinct fighting style except Ken and Ryu. Street Fighter had characters with different reaches, different normal attacks, jumped at different distances, and had different learning curves for each character. In MK the same foundational stiffness in basic gameplay remains which is a shame.
MK might hit high highs, but the audience doesn't stick around for long. People aren't "salty" because of the success, they're critiquing it for being sloppy.
I really appreciate Pat openly admitting to being a hater at the start just so he can go as hard as he can hating on MK with no regret.

WARNING: TACTICAL NUCLEAR PAT DETECTED! THE BOIVIN HAS GONE CRITICAL!

@@kapkant6197i mean, they had a MK Saturday morning cartoon back in the day ffs, adapting the spirit of the series for a lower age rating is not unfamiliar to them
It is funny to me how much hate MK gets from the "tradition FGC" scene when it is the most popular FG bar none.
