Other people may have said this, but in case they haven't I have a tip, Scott - in Floaroma Town you can get the TM for Pluck, a 60-power Flying-type move with the unique effect of stealing and eating the enemy's held berry, assuming it's holding one. Since pretty much every ace in this game has a Sitrus Berry, it could help Flying-type Pokemon turn the tables on the enemy.

its a weird thing with wingull and tailow. Based on the pattern of what people use the qualify as the "regional bird", Wingull fits the boxes, even moreso than Tailow. It is the first flying type avalible to the player, and its found ALL over the region. Tailow comes a bit later, and is much more limited. it used to be that "regional bird had to be Normal/Flying" but that was broken with Fletchling becoming Fire/Flying, and then Rookidee being pure flying. My theory is that when fans coined the archetype of regonal bird, it was just that they had to be normal/flying, because it was prior to fletchling.

When you look at the hoe and region and notice that it's one of the most water dominant (is that a good choice of words to describe the Hoenn region) regions in all of Pokemon, the idea of the water/flying type Pelliper being the regional bird makes a lot of sense...

@@craigyeah1052 so looking at the bulbapedia list of moves by index number, Rock throw, Earthquake, Dig and Fissure are all clustered together from index number 88-91, which I am gonna choose to read as supporting my theory since that's in the middle of a bunch of sets of moves of the same type: before that you have thundershock thunderbolt thunder and after that you get confusion psychic hypnosis, so I am going to argue that the index number indicates rock throw was originally a ground move that was changed later, particularly as rock slide, the only other gen 1 rock move, is at the end of the gen 1 index at 157, as if they made up a new type and realised they needed more moves for it.

Just a side note: Cranidos is very frail, so you could potentially have beaten Roark by not being so defensive with Endeavor against it. It's pretty much a slow glass cannon. With that said, I'm very impressed by how well you did with Staraptor! Plus I'm pumped for the next Platinum video :)

Staraptor is such a stacked regional bird. Great stats, strong moves including good STAB options with early Wing Attack and not to mention getting Close Combat on final evolution. Also just has a cool design, plus the Intimidate ability makes it legitimately kinda bulky on the physical side at times.
Best bird in my opinion. Talonflame is cool, but I just think Staraptor has done its thing longer and more consistently.

    • @louc.6735
      @louc.6735 5 месяцев назад +1

Talonflame also got giga nerfed after gen 6, and only gets its good features through breeding. It doesn't even get many good moves via levelup. Talonflame is also iirc not guaranteed due to Kalos distribution, whereas it's very hard to not get Starly in DPPt. By solo run and nuzlocke terms, Talonflame is kinda bad and Staraptor is an S tier mon.
Competitively, Talonflame also fell off because of its mediocre stats and how most of gen 6 ou moved to not needing defog at all. It's still good but our dear Smogonbird has seen better days.

The tip about using recoil moves is pretty good
Keep in mind that the recoil damage is a % of the damage dealt, meaning it won't be severe sometimes since your mon has more HP because of overlevel/effort/DVs/stat experience/high base HP compared to the target
To add a bit: besides Intimidate, Staraptor got Reckless later, dealing extra damage when using recoil moves

  • @redwings13400

I bet the reason Lucian is so bad is because you've been using overleveled physical attackers so far. I think he'd be a lot scarier with a primarily special attacker, and even though you've had pokemon that were supposed to be special or mixed attackers, you've gone with swords dance movesets for them, so they were physical by the time they arrived at Lucian.
With special attackers, I bet Bertha becomes a lot easier and Lucian a lot harder, with Flint and Aaron being the generally weakest members.

I feel another reason why Staraptor beat Infernape also has to do with move sets and I'm not just talking about coverage. Every time you drastically change a Pokemon's moves it takes a little bit of time and when you do it frequently it eats up precious seconds maybe even minutes all together. Staraptor had more or less its final move set the second it fully evolved only swapping out one move for Brave Bird. Also Staraptor relied soley on raw power never wasting turns setting up.

Despite its type, Cranidos is frail. Just attacking it is often the right move. Growl isn't much of an answer to Roark given Screech Onix.
I did my Staraptor run before realizing just how potent late-game Rare Candies are, so I couldn't take such an offensive approach. Brave Bird and Close Combat made me unable to handle five Pokemon in a row. I ended up using Roost and Fly. The AI can't predict your change in type, so Roost is amazing against Pokemon with Rock, Electric, or Ice moves. It'll be great for Flying-types with less raw damage output.

Staraptor did about as well as I expected. It IS a beast. Close Combat is one hell of a drug for this kind of pokemon, one that improves their performance a lot. And yeah, don't fear the recoil attacks. Respect them, use them sparsely, so you don't waste time healing or resetting, but don't fear them. If you are going to need healing, getting a bit of recoil damage is better than getting a lot of damage done by your opponent.

Recoil moves are definitely going to be your friend in 4th gen, as they introduced a lot of really good type-based ones. Wood Hammer, Flare Blitz, Brave Bird... And then there's Head Smash which is even stronger, but also only has 80% accuracy. My thought is if something learns double team by level up and has issues with the first gym it should be allowed to use it as long as it's overwritten after that (may not need to be deleted but that at least keeps it fair for the rest of the run and keeps things competitive and in line with their level up sets)
But at the end of the day, what you think is fair is all that matters. Cheers! Love the vids

Long post, sorry, just 4 points
Staraptor is Gamefreak taking a good idea of Swellow and making it better.
Today we learnt, Endeavour is a poor move in a solo run, you are never gonna to knock the opponent out and i believe it's meant to weaken the opponent for your next Pokémon to grab the KO.
I guess Scott didn't need to do this, but i was screaming at my screen "YOU HAVE ROOST TO OFFSET BRAVE BIRD'S RECOIL"
That comment about your Pokémon's HP as a resource for more damage, that's a philosophy from many games, notable to me is Yu-Gi-Oh, "Life Points don't matter except your last one"
    Thank you for reading.

its a weird thing with wingull and tailow.

I had a feeling Staraptor would excel. Gen 4 in many ways kind of feels like the first time they really started designing most pokemon to succeed. They don't always get it right, but you can see it in the vastly improved movepools, the more min-maxed stat distributions, and of course the physical/special split relieving so many pokemon of the burdens of mismatched types/stats.

Btw Scott can you leave in a bit more of the overworld? I haven't played Gen 4 as much so I'm still a bit fuzzy on the details and I generally like to follow your run a bit more. Yes you're generally saying where you are and what you're doing but I often times don't quite get it yet. 22:58 Yes, absolutely! I also think Flare Blitz would have improved your Infernape time, for example, as Fire coverage is quite good for a few mons for which you didn't have any, and Close Combat was pretty much always doing more than Earthquake anyway; I totally get being averse to using recoil moves, since you're really focused on solo challenges, but yeah, as Benjamin said, by being afraid of the recoil, you're not using a resource of yours (HP) and leaving a lot of power on the table.

Staraptor's just got the right stats in the right places and just Fighting and Flying alone is great type coverage. Normal being added to it is good too since it gets STAB on Return. Brave Bird being a strong STAB attack is great too. Roark as expected was a roadblock but beyond that, damn it's good.

    @stevenlocke1233 5 месяцев назад

Yeah, I don't know how interesting this series could really be. Seems like it's almost always going to be that there's some hurdle to overcome in the early game that will force you to over-level, thus resulting in not much of a challenge in the mid-game, then the absurd amount of Rare Candies available late will make you obscenely over-leveled for the league, with little to no issues against the Elite Four and, unless you're using something REALLY bad, Cynthia should never be an issue. Also hard to say whether certain gym leaders or Elite Four members are the worst when you're obscenely over-leveled for them, like with Maylene and Lucian.

I've always named my Staraptor's Sergeant Merrick, after a character from Dawn of War: Retribution, an Imperial Guardsman who roars about the thousands of guardsmen who died, with the retort from his commander being "A guardsmans life is to die." That is my view of Staraptors.
A Staraptor's LIFE is to die. It is a trainer's duty to bring it to where it CAN die. They are the wings which bear the team on its back, the suicide scout, the force of fury recklessly disregarding its own well being to ensure victory.

In regards to pronouncing Japanese words and names, it is helpful to know that each vowel has only one sound it can possibly make.
    A is "ah"
    I is "ee"
    U is "ooh"
    E is "eh"
    O is "oh"
Vowels can never sound like anything else.
Also in case you want to be especially accurate, Japanese does not put emphasis on any syllables by default, as emphasis is used as a means of implication in conversation.

I don’t think it would’ve been useful in this run but be sure not to overlook natural gift on some Pokémon! It’s great for if there is one opponent poke that you don’t have a move for and is causing problems although it does make you use your item slot so that’s the biggest downside.
