    With any mild plinking load (not screaming hot), in all my guns so far, the non-gas checked bullet will out group the gas checked from the same mold, batch, alloy, etc. For a while I would always do the load development with checks and when the best load for accuracy was found load up a group without checks to compare against. The non-checks shot as well or better and without the added work. Also, I did learn that there are different width checks for most calibers to accommodate powder coat or not. I believe it was Sage's Reloading that had a wide selection to choose from. Thanks for another great video!

      I have heard that before, and have pretty good luck without using GCs for the most part. It's just another thing to test and see if we can push it any faster. Maybe they help in the AR? Idk, we'll see when we get there. Going to mostly use them unchecked if I can get away with it. Thanks for watching!

    Interesting test. Looking forward to part 2.

    Just getting into shooting mild cast bullet loads in bottleneck cartridges, and it is a lot of fun. Was a bit disappointed in my first batch of testing with 154 grain Lymans in 6.5x55 and IMR 4198 and H322. Groups are running around 4” at 100 yards. I think I’m going to try large pistol magnum primers for the next go round.

      It's definitely more of a challenge to get the cast rounds to shoot how you like. I've found that they fly much better on the slower end than near a top charge. Also, slower burning powders seem to help by not hitting their peak pressure so fast, but rather a gradual push down the barrel. It could simply be a matter of what diameter they were sized to compared to your barrel. Are you powder coated or old school lube? Good luck!

      @@DummyRound My Lyman sizing die is marked.266,” but results are.2655.” Maybe I’ll try the RCBS version as they generally give the advertised diameter. Rifle is a modern CZ, so bore shouldn’t be an issue. I use traditional lube with gas checks.
      My charge of IMR 4198 is mild at 1690 fps, so I can definitely bump that up a bit. The H322 load is 1920 fps and gave very similar results to the 4198 load. I bought a pound of Accurate 2015 to try once my range opens back up on 3/1.

    Never used gas checks before, cast my own a lot and powder coat them.
    Only use tight group for Cowboy loads so I'm not sure if I should even be commenting !!

    That riflerange is very nice and quiet. Interesting because I was wondering how gas checks are put on the bullets. Looking forward to Pt2.

    • @DummyRound

      It is a very nice range and I'm usually the only one there for some reason. GCs are applied with several different methods, but I do it while the bullet is getting sized. More to come, thanks!

    Good stuff . I like that you tested them with and without gas checks . Did you water quench these ?

    • @DummyRound
      @DummyRound  2 года назад +2

      They were quenched. I have some more cast up that I am going to GC before PCing this time. Then we can test GC vs no GC once I find a decent powder.

    Case would have lots of empty space in it with only 8gr of powder right? Would that make it more dangerous or inconsistent? Can you add filler material to the charge?

    • @DummyRound
      @DummyRound  Год назад +1

      It has potential to be dangerous, and definitely inconsistent. You could add filler. I was just seeing what was possible with the fastest burning powder I have on hand. It will not come anywhere close to cycling an AR, these were just for a bolt gun and some fun. If you want reduced loads, powders like Tite Group or Trail Boss will be better suited for that purpose.

    Is your sizing die a Lee or Lyman for setting the gas checks , I use the rcbs lube sizer it pushes on the top of the bullet forcing the bullet into the gas check for my 308 win

    • @DummyRound
      @DummyRound  2 года назад +1

      It is a Lee sizing die. Going to try GC before adding the PC on some freshly cast boolits. Thanks 👍🇺🇸

    DR do you have videos/recipes for semi auto on this projectile. Need a good base staring point. Can we use the same powder we have for fMj? Example cfe223.

    • @DummyRound
      @DummyRound  2 года назад

      I plan on using them in the AR when we get to those types of powders. CFE223 is definitely doable. I'd probably start at 15 or so grains and slowly work up in 0.5gr increments until you have function and lock back. From there, you can fine tune the powder charge up or down a few tenths at a time, as well as play with crimp and what little bit of seating depth you can play with to find some kind of accuracy. Thanks!
