  • My son and I took the opportunity to spend a few days kayak camping on the Kangaroo River in the recent school holiday break. We used the Hobie Lynx and an Ocean Kayak as our watercraft and I spent a few days preparing all the gear for our adventure. With the Mt Scanzi road out of service for repair meaning Tallowa dam was not possible as a launch point we opted to launch from Bendeela Camping ground and paddle 11km downstream to access the remote camping areas. We settled on Acacia Flat as it allowed very easy access for the kayaks and is a great flat area to camp also having a drop toilet. The weather gods were smiling for out trip and we had sunny days and light to no wind. Early morning was wet and damp with the fog and mist but that is normal for this time of year. I noted from the trip a month earlier that the water was a chocolate brown due to the recent flooding in that area. There was also a lot of debris in the water as we travelled down the river. Big hay bails were also seen way downstream washed by the flooding. The water level under Hamptden Bridge was 12m at the time. We also saw about 5 wombats that had obviously drowned in the flooding and were floating on the river bank.
The fishing was a lot quiter than prior to the flooding but we managed a few fish. This trip was more about enjoyng the camping and all the natural beauty that was around us. Being off the grid with no cell service also makes for a less disruptive trip and allows you to fully relax. My son (Cody) and I had a great time. We shared some great meals and had the whole campsite to ourselves.
We saw plenty of wildlife whilst we were there. Kangaroo's wombats, goanna, Kingfisher, Water Dragons, Wallabies and loads of other bird species.
I put up the DJI Mavic 2 and captured some awesome scenery. Check out the set up as we had to carry all of our gear for the trip. On my previous video I showed how I transport it all and what gear I take with me. The Hobie Lynx and Ocean Kayak handled the gear easily and we had everything that we needed.
One one of the nights about 1.30am I heard some rustling out under the tarp outside. When I got out of my tent and lifted the tarp i came across a big water rat that was ripping into a pack of biscuits that I had accidentally left out. My torch light startled him and he made a run for the water jumping in. There had been a big goanna prowling the site earlier so I was happy that it was just a water rat and not a big Goanna.
On the third day we made our way back upstream to complete our trip, having really enjoyed a few days away.
Looking forward to the road reopening in a few months to head back down and do it again.
