Exploring Bere Island - Biking, Walking & Camping

- Two nights spent exploring the wonderful Bere Island with fabulous weather. There are many places of interest on Bere Island including - Martello Towers, Ardnakinna Lighthouse, Holy Year Cross, Gallán Standing Stone and Bere Island Heritage and Information Centre to name a few. I brought a bike which helped cover a lot of ground but some places of interest were definitely more accessible by foot so the combination worked well for me. The island is 11km long by 4km wide (and not 10km x 2 km as stated in the video).
There are two separate ferry operators serving the island from Castletownbere and another about 5km outside Castletownbere. The two ferry providers bring you to different parts of the island.

Touching. Lovely nature, and good living. Yeh, about the brainwave and camping next to a working lighthouse - I had the same thought last year when the only non saturated ground I could find was within ear shot of a massive wind turbine.
I recall last year a reviewer honouring you for your communication about being in the nature wild.
Outside Edinburgh we have the Pentland hills, which are a set of 570m summits that you can can, if determined, pull and ride a bike up and down. I was summit camping there four mths ago when at 7pm a young woman came by with her bike. I found myself chatting about the benefits of contact with the wild hills, and recommending your channel for inspiration and guidance. Takecare.

Super late to pop a comment on here Miriam, I actually watched this the night it came online, on the big tv, where there are no comment options - then life got busy and I totes forgot. Better late than never ay? Lol. And how full of sparkle were you on this trip to Bere Island 😁You do research some amazing areas to visit, and this one was no exception. What a fantastic place, with so much to explore on so compact an island, and the best way to do it is by bike, even if it's hard going at times. And some beautiful drone work, as always.
It's a good idea strapping the backpack to your Brompton - I always worry I'm going to encounter a locked gate when I'm out bikepacking on the e-bike, then having to take the panniers off, and the e-bike is pretty heavy for lifting over fences (I haven't had to do that yet). Brompton life looks a lot more carefree lol. And easier to stash - like a body 🤣🤣
I'd never heard of Martello Towers before, but they look really interesting.
Another extremely enjoyable watch. They all are. Ireland has so much to offer and I love it when we get to see these smaller islands first hand. Thanks Miriam 😁👍🏼

@@farmerspud1270 Hi there! Exactly - I’ve lost all interest in foreign travel in recent years 😉 I didn’t notice any taps on the island but I wasn’t exactly looking to be honest. When I’m on a cycling trip, I have no problem knocking on someone’s door to ask for water. Luckily I remembered that I was short on water when passing the final houses - everyone has always been very happy to fill a bottle(s) for me thankfully!

Thanks Ed! 🤩 The first night had a small amount at the beach but not enough for me to even get my spray or net from my bag. The second night had none and there was very little breeze also. We’re nothing like Scotland - they can be bad but I could count on one hand the amount of times they’ve interfered with a trip away to be honest 😉

Wahoooo!! That was a whopper of a sausage that was leftover from a BBQ from a few weeks ago. I parboiled the sausage and stuck it in the freezer to bring with me on a trip....it worked a treat!! At least I knew it was cooked right through when I cooked it on my little pan 😎

I absolutely love Bere Island. I spent many days there with the FCA or the Army Reserve as it is now called. I got to zip line across the strand where you camped, shoot on the range & go fishing off the rocks. The history of the island is unreal from Vikings using it as a base & somewhere to repair their long boats, the Martello towers you mentioned & of course Loneheart battery which is a huge fort built by the British to defend their fleet. The whole island has the most incredible vibe that it is simply indescribable but you certainly nailed it. Thank you. Keep up the great work.

Thank you Susanna!! 🤗 I was surprised how much this island offered - such a relaxed and lovely spot, it certainly delivered! That beach was fab - I should have hopped in the water that morning but I thought I’d save it until later in the day and then the opportunity escaped! 🤦♀️ The red sitmat is always close to hand (and bum!) - I’ve lost a few over the years!! I’m feeling a lot better these days and I’m back jogging and building up some better fitness at last 🥳 The hair is definitely growing and I’ve developed the infamous chemo curls…it’s great to have hair again! @@faulknertkd the aul sausage sambo adds a special element to a trip for sure!! 🤩 I often bring a book but hardly ever read anything…the night just escapes…by the time it gets dark in the Summertime I’m ready for sleep. In the winter I just potter around - cooking, drinking tea, dunking biscuits, sorting my stuff out, sitting there with a smug grin at how great it is to be in a tent!! It’s amazing how the time passes!! Just sitting in the tent or staring out of the tent brings plenty of entertainment 😊
I like solitude myself, calms the mind, I discovered wim Hoff breathing a good while ago and his cold water therapy.....cold showers and it works for me! Gary Brika recommends it ! Yeah I get it , when you walk a long time with your thoughts you do get tired! Miriam try this one.... when you want to quieten the mind ask yourself this question "I wonder what my next thought will be?" Let me know how you get on 😮
@faulknertkd I’ve been a meditator for nearly 30 years so I’m well used to watching my mind at work 😉 Great that you get such benefit from the cold water work - so many sing its praises! My interest in camping started with my desire for solitude - a wonderful opportunity to get away from the trappings of life for sure!! The novelty hasn’t worn off for me after years of it - it still works!! 🤩

Great to catch up with your latest marvellous offering Miriam. I have been cycling on the Brompton from IJmuiden to Amsterdam recently and didn't find any time to devote to RUclips. Since then, I had a wee accident and fell off the bike fracturing some bone in my elbow. It was a pity as I had intended on cycling the D-Day Beaches in Normandy before travelling back home by way of Ireland: the Cherbourg-Rosslare ferry, then trains / bus / ferry / and bus to Glasgow. Your video as always has lifted my spirits after my travails and I continue to marvel over your technical abilities in producing such videos in the face of all difficulties. You are an inspiration indeed !

My day always brightens when I'm notified of another Miriam video. This one was excellent. I detect a slightly more' laid back' and 'as it comes' sort of attitude which I like. This would be my default setting for bike rides anyway - planning is not one of my strong points. I enjoy the excitement of not knowing where I'm going.

Thanks very much Jeremy! I definitely enjoy a more relaxed style to my trips but I’m possibly less relaxed when I bring the camera along. In saying that - I was maybe able to be a bit more relaxed on this one, possibly as I know I’m not firing on all cylinders 🤔 Without the camera I definitely relax more, I find it hard to completely shut down the brain with the camera. Maybe that’ll come with experience, I do know I seemed to talk to camera a lot more on this one for some reason, no idea why 🤷♀️ I’m doing pretty good - still some ongoing treatment (targeted treatment where I get an injection once every 3 weeks for a year and a hormone treatment of a tablet a day for the next 5 years). I seem to be doing pretty well with the side effects of those to date! 😉
@@MiriamKennedy Thanks for such a thorough response Miriam. I can understand why having the camera with you causes a little more anxiety but watching your videos, you wouldn't know it! I would guess that your 'easy manner' when talking 'to camera' has come as a surprise to you and it's certainly a joy for us. You are 'a natural' Miriam and that's one of the reasons why your videos are so enjoyable. I'm pleased to here that your recovery is going well. Best wishes.

Absolutely magic video. Multi million dollar Block busters don’t do for me what little reflections on a persons reality like this one can do. Somehow took me right back to the proper pace of life that’s so hard to find until you get out west.
I’ve never been to Bere island. So beautiful and intoxicatingly so in the weather you found.
Your gear is so tidy and light. Less is more. I’m always learning.
The mortello towers are intriguing because they’re made in the local dry stone wall style rather than cut granite like in Dublin.

Always a pleasure to find these places. I thought Bere would have been a place you had visited. On my way into the Lighthouse Cinema here for some other escapism 🤗

@MiriamKennedy well it is about 20 years so something has changed. The hostel had just opened but it's now Lawrence Cove Lodge. I have certnally been in Glengarriff many times since. I must take Kathy there some day soon.

Tent right on edge of Scart Beach, amazing sunset/sunrise AND a jam and sausage bun. Doesn’t get better than that! So good the weather was kind as drone shots were particularly good. Many thanks for sharing the trip with us as always.

Well that’s great to hear 🤩 Thank you! It’s called the Lifeventure Travel Bottle Shower - it’s so handy!! I have mine a few years and when I googled it just now I noticed that it comes with a tube but I don’t use that. There is also a hole in the side which I cover up with tape (I can’t remember what the purpose of that hole was)…it works so well though!

On my way home from my hols and this video notification pops up. Nice Saturday evening watch! I've been trying to visit some islands myself this year and this looks the business. You mentioned camping under a working lighthouse not being a great idea, and i would have agreed until i camped under one in Inis Oirr. Because the light shines out from so high up, if you are beneath, you hardly notice the light! It was a surprise to me! Anyway most wonderful to see you looking well, best wishes and continued health to you.

Since your last video I have made my trip to southwest Ireland and back - and plotting a return. I was also in Castletown, closest to Bere Island. It was all so beautiful and wonderous. It was quite an experience for this landlocked Coloradan. "the ocean unknits the mind," John ODonohue🌊

Wow Miriam, i think this is your best ever. You got perfect weather for making video and I love the map inserts-this stuff all looks simple till you try it yourself. I just got to Geneva with my little possee and we'll spend time in Annecy before coming back to Ireland on Fri 28th where weather permitting we'll seek out somewhere to enjoy some hiking and maybe see some of those beautiful sunsets. It took me most of yesterday to edit it but it was enjoyable, except when my laptop was stalling and I didn't know what was going on 🙃 I still feel like I'm pretty in the dark about what I'm doing every time I go at it...I'm just glad it works when it does! 🤩 If the weather works out and you're walking in Dublin or Wicklow let me know and maybe I could meet you and your possee if it suits! Had to laugh as you manovered the brompton through that gate/stile 😅. It seems like a deceptively big Island. You certainly fit a lot into your trips, sightseeing, walks, scone tasting , and tree planting, or was it metal detecting ??😂 . All the best 👍 👌

Yeah so much to see on the island - I didn’t explore as much of the coastline as I would have liked to do…it wasn’t a trip to be rushing to try take it all in I suppose. Cheers for watching!

Really enjoyed your video, I agree that taking the easier route is sometimes the best option. Such a relaxed stay on the island and no midges as far as I can see, mind the wind helps keep them away. Thanks as always for taking the trouble t take us along ATB Big Dave Scotland
