Please note that Canadian Kindles do not offer Bluetooth, so playing Audible or any other audiobooks is not possible. Also Amazon has chosen to ensure that Kindle is not compatible with Libby. Kobo in Canada offers Bluetooth making audiobooks a possibility, and also allows Libby to be used. For Canadian E book users, Kobo is the only proper option.
wish id known this before getting my kindle :(
Wonder why Libby is available in the US and not Canada. That seems odd, but possibly a rights issue.
THANK YOU!!!
@@adamhenderson6943 yea libby is in canada
@shavohna it is in Canada, just not with kindle
Thank you for mentioning that flush screen is actually not as good as people want the “aesthetics of a flush screen”. When I read I want crisper text, closer to what it looks like on real paper. Less glare, the point of getting an e-reader..
@Nancy Pelosi which Kobo do you mean exactly? If Clara 2E, then I mean that the Clara 2E has a sunken screen and it may actually look better than the paperwhite. It seems to be trendy to prefer the aesthetics of a flush screen but people don't realize / mention how the flush screen takes away from the crispiness of text. That's what I'm blabbering about.
I really don't like the flush screen on my current kindle. It really makes it easy to skip to the next page I preferred the concave screen that was on my previous kindle which somehow got lost.
indeed
Kindle going backwards. That button placement made this version junk
Just switched from PW5 to Clara 2E, Clara 2E does have better screen, lightweight, still fast, but one thing you should know is that if youre not lucky enough, you would get the clara 2E with cones of light along the bottom, which means it would have uneven backlight
Edit: its actually frontlights
"cones of light along the bottom"
Backlight bleed (or in this case, frontlight bleed)?
@@kbhasi yes it was, i returned that one for a new one but still unlucky to get a clean screen. So I switched to the kindle basic, cuz its as lightweight as the clara
You can pinch to zoom/shrink the Kobo screen without pulling down the settings. I think this was a very recent update.
It works awful on my Kobo Forma, it is extremely slow, not to mention that I never get the right size
@@ComtessedArtagnan very clunky.
Be advised if you are over 50 years old, get a larger screen (KOBO Libra 2) or Kindle PW 6.8 (or Oasis) You can use larger fonts and still keep enough text to read fluently. I got tired of using larger fonts on a small screen and having to turn pages so frequently.
You can be over 50 years old and not have eye sight issues :)
@@TheUntypicals you can be any age and not realise that eye sight degenerates with age despite how impervious to it you feel.
@@TheUntypicals Good for you...but you will eventually have
I'm over 50 and I am using portable glasses for nearsighted that hold on your neck. They are cheap and connect with magnets. You can read more text with smaller fonts and at the same time save your battery.
43 and now I have to take my glasses off when reading my phone. Actually I'm looking at Scribe, quite pricey though.. thinking of just 6.8" read in landscape mode..
Thanks for the visual comparison. Each has advatages and slight disadvantages but this presentation lets me visually see the differences, though may mot have helped me decide. Lol
Those text sizes he compared are nottttt the same
Would be good to mention that kobo devices can read many different files while kindle has you more or less locked in the amazon system. Big reason I chose Kobo over Kindle.
Kindle used not allow epub doc downloads, they recently changed that and they do now though.
@@mryan4452it's not a real epub format that they use. They convert it only when you use send-to-kindle. It won't be the best possible copy but good enough.
How do I transfer my epub books from my pc to my kobo?
The Kindle power button for me has not been an issue at all. I had to force myself to press it while holding it, and I have a case which makes it virtually impossible to press while standing it up. I feel like the power button on the back of the device is much more of an annoyance if a case doesn't allow for it.
personally I like the power button at the bottom, it makes it easy to wake up the device hehe compare to putting it at the back or top that you have to reach for it 😅 my personal opinion
I have neither of these versions, but the Kindle looks to be sharper and has a cleaner appearance on screen in this vid. Kobo also seems to be a bit more sluggish.
I'd love to install the Kobo software on a Kindle PW. For me that would be the perfect ereader.
@Nancy Pelosi Im not. I just like the PW screen size without the horrible buttons of the libra or sage, but I prefer the kobo software.
@Nancy Pelosi Where do I said so? I was talking about screen size. And the PW screen is not glossy (at least is not annoying) Anyway, I have both kobo clara hd and kindle PW and I prefer the PW desing overall. The only thing I really dont like is the amazon ecosystem. Im not a fanboy of any brand, all of them have good and bad things, im not really sure who's the fanboy here. You're making me remember that old meme that said "Stop liking what I don't like".
@Nancy Pelosi Yeah sure
man, If only the Kobo screen were a little larger. :/
There's always the Kobo Libra 2. 7" screen, and the rest of specifics are the same.
@Nancy Pelosi oh Nancy, are you drunk?
That is nice but some of my reading material is PDF so bigger screen is necessary
@@rokko_fable so buy Libra 2 then? This is for people who like to carry their E readers in their pockets.
still can't choose between the two
I’ve never had an issue with the kindle button. Don’t even know it was an issue
Yeah baby, praise Taiwan!!!
I just got this as my very first e-reader and it arrived today. The box shows it was made in China though and not in Taiwan as you had said in the video.
Yeah there’s Chinese and Taiwanese ones. My Taiwan made Libra 2 is going back to Amazon though. There’s a raised bump on the front plastic housing, the metal part of the USB port has a jagged piece of metal sticking out. And most egregiously, the display isn’t flat under the screen, so the lighting is blotchy and lines of text curve on the side of the display with buttons. iPhones are made by Foxconn in China.
If in your intro that is what is "very important",... bye bye. You sold me to find someone else.
Hey there, we have absolutely no idea what any of that means. Thanks so much
Couldn't agree more about the Kindle power button! It's actually the biggest reason I'm watching this review!
Is there any difference on the battery life between them?
So this year Amazon is going to start to sell a Kobo Aura One from 6 YEARS AGO calling it Kindle Paperwhite. Allways at the edge of the technology.
Maybe in 20 years they start to sell color eink ebooks.
or even let your borrow from your libary
Do you have a source for this claim? There is no place that mentions this online.
@@Synthwave89 Of course, that's because Kobo discontinued the Aura One four years ago. Do a better search, and you will see that they are the same.
I'm gonna buy an E-reader maybe at the end of the year (waiting for the other products to be released). I'm gonna read some self-help books, fiction, and manga. Which brand/type do you think suits my reading materials better? oh and I'm definitely avoiding the expensive ones. I'm okay if it's cheap as long as it's good quality and not old, up to the mid prices.
For free DRM without using Calibre, Kobo, for good subscription method, Kindle, and right now, kindle is the best of the two, but if you truly value freedom, you'll choose a Kobo
@Nancy Pelosi AGREED. I've had a Kobo GLO for 6 years and it still works perfectly and needs charging only every 6-8 weeks; I am buying a Clara 2E today because it's time for a new one. (The old one will not go in the trash; I have a friend who wants it).
Hi Peter
Very good video.
I come from Germany. My English is not very good. But I could understand you very well. I ordered the Kobo Clara 2e today. What I would have been interested in is a comparison between the pocketbook era and the kobo Clara 2e.
I think Pocketbook didn't do that well with the eInk Carta 1200 display.
Greeting Marco
I wish Kobo still made the Aura H2O with the 6.8” screen it was perfect 😞 I don’t like the form factor of the Libra with the physical buttons
How does everyone prop up the kids die without turning it off???
good you highlighted the kobo’s green credentials, it was the selling point for me
I have both kindle and kobo. Despite i live in Canada, where I am not able to borrow books from libraries electronically, I still use kindle as main device for its smooth navigation and user interface
I live in Canada and can borrow ebooks with Overdrive.
@@guskalo1981 Overdrive is not available for Kindle on Overdrive unfortunately
My Kindle power button is now stuck and not working 😭
So I am looking for new e reader
I love Taiwan.
Well Taiwan is best part of China :)
@@MilosJeremic1983 China is the worst part of Taiwan
Thank you, I also love Guangdong
kindle's screen is still more soothing to eyes, arghhh, I can't wait for kindle colored but I think I will :) I hope my patience will pay off :P
I liked kindle paperwhite more it is good package with kindle Unlimited only downfall is no audiobook😢 or bluetooth pairing support here in India.
Kindle Paperwhite is my favorite 😍
I already have PW5 as my 1st E-reader. I now want Kobo only for use Koreader, as Amazon just forced my jail broken PW5 to update FW and I cannot use Koreader on it anymore.
So if I get the Kobo, is it easier to install and use Koreader without worrying about the same issue like on Kindle?
I shave off protruding power buttons with a knife.
Thanks for this video. Very informative!
It seems so sluggish even when disregarding the inherent slow refresh rate of e-ink devices. Consequently it feels like scrolling, or any kind of animations really, is not a good UX for these kinds of devices.
I choose kindle before knowing about kobo maybe when my kindle dies I might switch.
Using a kindle fir medical school
Thumbs up for the Manga alone lol
What about zoom and unzoom in a pdf?
Is the latence time acceptable ?
Kindle is just better for the price. Kobo is behind now.
Why wouldn’t someone want to use for pdfs…? 🤔
What format do you use for comics and graphic novels? I’m buying the new kobo for Christmas and will like to know
@Nancy Pelosi Why do I get the feeling that you’re a 12 year old boy?
Kobo supports .cbz and .cbr file format.
@@jazminlei thanks!
thank you so much that's exactly the kind of advice I needed to make my choice!!
which one did you choose?
Kindle Paperwhite ftw
Kindle Paperwhite wins by a mile, because amazon often puts it on discount which makes it cheaper than the kobo for a larger screen (which is a game changer).
@Nancy Pelosi I don't know about that. I download my ebooks for free from sites such as lib genesis. It's way too expensive to buy them.
@@Tate-Trump-Fan thank you for this!! ❤️
Clara 2e vs onyx boox 4 lite ?
unfortunately the 2e will be going up against the 4e B&N and the Kindle . so we cant squeeze that in :(
@@goodereader what about ur opinion between the two? I'm not asking for a full video, just another opinion because I'm wondering myself between them. Thanks in advance!
Kindle better contrast, better for read. Kobo better software in my opinion
The contrast is the same. It's the same screen on both. The only difference is that the Kindle has a glossy glass screen which means you'll be wasting more power turning the backlight up if reading in a bright space
The clara 2e has the same e-ink carta 1200 screen like the libra 2, i have both the libra 2 and PW5, the former has better contrast and crisper texts. Kobo with nicklemune/Koreader installed will leave kindle to dust. The thing i hate about the libra is its asymmetrical design and weight. I find the PW5 easier to hold and I love that i can just email my ebooks to it. But you can also integrate dropbox to the libra 2.
I purchased the kindle paperwhite 11th gen and kobo Libra 2 and the kobo is soooo much clearer.
Probably because it’s directly on the rink screen rather than a small thin layer of glass over top of the kindle paperwhite.
I chose the kobo Libra 2 over the reading experience being way better.
Use to be a heavy kindle user for 4 years. Then went to kobo for 4 years and after 8 years in total with ereaders- I have let go of kindle.
Hope one day though that kobo comes out with a flush screen version without the buttons :) that would be nice for me.
Ok i”m confused which shoul i buy between clara 2e or pw 11th, but i”m make up my mind to buy clara 2e with consideration:
1. I already have kobo libra H2O and in got bigger screen 7 inch which is fine, but it”s not handheld device
2. If i”m buy the kindle 6.8 inch i think is not making ant different than kobo libra h20.
So thanks for the video ✅
No one cares about the recycled stuff. We just want a good affordable product
I tried the Kobo Clara 2E and wanted to free myself of Amazon, but I am in total shock at how buggy and utterly broken the software is:
After starting in sideload mode, the device always showed some strange pre-installed book series that weren't from me and couldn't be deleted, because they were empty. But there are two pages of unknown authors and book series on the device. Even after several factory resets they're appearing as soon as the WiFi is connected and must be a remnant from some previous owner even though it's a brand new device or there is a bug in the Rakuten cloud with the device ID for unregistered devices. Other people on Reddit seem to have similar problems. I then went through the actual setup with a Rakuten account and then signed out again and deleted the fake account. This worked for two hours and afterwards these strange (empty) book series reappeared.
An automatic firmware update did not update the latest firmware for some reason and was only installed through calibre.
The next problem is that the thing crashed repeatedly and just freezed on the three dots screen. And after a while it automatically did a factory reset, which is probably a fail safe which wipes all settings and books. It's unbelievable. Why does this happen?
It has problems with a simple USB connection half the time and USB 3.0 ports seem to work only on each fourth try or so. Also just unplugging the device without safely ejecting it (which nobody does ever) apparently corrupts the database.
The final nail in the coffin was that I spend 2 hours with Calibre and the KoboTouchExtended plugin to get covers to sync, but it's just not working no matter what I sync and do. They look fine in the calibre library and after a sync even in the devices tab, but not on the device itself. I cannot really grasp that this is so complicated to update a book cover in the current year. I am really baffled at the alpha state of the software and I guess I have to live with the shitty new UI after a forced update of my old Kindle Paperwhite after all.
It's such a shame, I'm not even going to bother trying out KoReader and will just return the device.
The hardware seems to be fine, but the screen of my unit has some bright spots on the lower corners.
Literally never had these problems
@@ReddRubble It might have to do with the sideload mode without a Kobo accout and doing a bit more with the device than just buying books from their store.
@@hanswurst9866 I only ever sideload books. Maybe something went wrong when you updated the Kobo via Calibre?
I haven't had issues with plugins either, it it annoying you need plugins to get it all to work, but Im happy to compromise on that to take on Amazon. I hope it was a dodgy unit ii had. Kobo probably needs better quality control of others have having issues like you've described
According to a Reddit post, using Calibre with the KoboTouchExtended driver and enabling (yes enabling) "book previews" leads to being able to delete these ghost authors.
Also, converting everything to the kepub format with Calibre supposedly solves the crashing database, but Koreader is apparently always unstable due to the Linux kernel for these NXP motherboards.
"Made out of 80% recycled plastics"
seriously no one cares about this. The only thing that matters is if the product is good, durable and long lasting. Products that adversities themselves as environment friendly is a massive red flag. If you really want to help the environment the best thing you can do is keep your stuff for a longer time. Use your phone for 3-4 years, build a pc that can last you 5-12 years, look for stuff that can last you for years to come. The more often you throw stuff, the more damage you do.
Absolutely TONS of people care about this lol
My Kobo Glo HD is almost 10 years old and I can't find any sign of wear on it, the battery still lasts for weeks.
The only reason I'm buying the Clara right now is because my lil brother got hooked to my Glo and I ended up giving it to him.
while i actually agree with the majority of your comment in how people should approach electronics to reduce wastes AND save money. if the product loses none of it's quality and is made out of recycled goods, that emphasis plastic wastes in the ocean in particular is only a net positive to most (if even just a little) or no net change at all.
it would be absurd for them not to market this and equally as absurd not to mention it as a reviewer particularly for this line of products where i suspect eco consciousness and people that read alot is likely higher than lets say a coffee maker or a mop handle..
a biased video in favour of kobo
We are not biased. Also, we have no ties to either company, so just literally no reason for us to be biased, and you have no idea what you're talking about. Thank you
Taiwan is also a China, actually
No it's not.
Time Warner is its own country with its own currency, laws, judicial system, passport, flag, and is a democratic country with lgbtq rights
@@goodereader it's called the Republic of China, ya goof. Also love how the main difference you could mention about Taiwan is LGBTQ rights - LOL. Wanker.
