Thanks for the video! There's so much I didn't know or have forgotten since I got the Canon HF10 in 2008! The greatest surprise is that it's possible to change lens! Got a spare telephoto lens and it works!!
An older 1080p camera can be an awesome tool. The CCD sensors and optical zoom are on a different quailty level to phones.... A pencil eraser is the best thing to clean battery terminals with....

I have a Sony HDR-CX440 since 2019. It is really great! I use it to record daily videos of my family, children, etc... Then I save everything as a souvenir. It is a personal collection.
Thanks for the behind the scenes. I really dig your style, very pratical and focus on the essentials (content over asthetics). You mentioned external mics and the capabilities of each camera, so I was wondering about your sound editing process. I'm gonna guess you use Audacity or something like that. If so, can you one day show us how to you extract the more of your sound during editing? Or do you just stick with the raw sound? Thanks in advance
Glad you like it! Sometimes I feel like these are boring filler, but I find it interesting to see how other people film and produce stuff. I do 99% of my editing in Shotcut on Linux, including the audio. I go through and tweak the gain up or down as needed, sync up audio from different cameras or voiceovers, make sure any background music isn't too loud and maybe matches cuts if I'm feeling artsy. I do have a desktop mic that I've tried using for voiceovers, and I have a review on that sitting in my backlog of videos (Spoiler: I like the camcorder better for recording audio!).
I picked up two HFM30's that I think are nice, though don't doubt you and you're observations at all. I totally can confirm the Canon's file transfer is wonky with the HFM30's as well. I have to use the power supply when doing and I even forget the odd memory management routine to delete the file after copying which can only be done when plugged into the power supply. Mine also, or at least one for certain, has some sort of auto focus hiccup issue where decides to not focus and turn into a focus motor noise maker with bad imaging.
I've been using the S8+ that I bought like the LG G4 like I bought the Galaxy J3 Luna Pro, so I could use the Walmart and Meijer apps on their WiFi since at one time I observed differences between the Walmart mobile websites and the regular webpage. I also found the bar code reader super handy and the isle search for each store a bonus. What motivated me to the G4 was to use as a camera which I still think is great, though I haven't made the setting changes so can shoot Short videos on the fly, where-as the beat up S8+ does seamlessly and has great video quality as well IMO. The S8+ was more to upgrade and to have a more mobile smart phone that connects with the cell service towers using textnow or freedompop where the G4 was more a base station system with portability and I don't want to pay more than I spent on to maybe have unlocked with an unlocking service since LG and ATnT are not able to unlock due to being unsupported. Due to not able to support VoLTE, I wasn't able to use the Freedompop at least yet. Maybe some software hack or upgrade may enable. Textnow service works great on the S8+. Anyways, blah blah blah blah blah blah back to work.
I've used a few different phones as cameras, I even made a mount to turn an Otterbox-equipped phone into an "action camera"... Then someone gave me some 2nd-generation GoPros. Anyway, just out here running a channel about obsolete junk, filmed with obsolete junk :-)
did you ever get your hands on some old vcr camcorders? If yes you could do a video on the mini crt inside the viewfinders. They are mindbogglingly easy to work with
Given the difference in manufacture dates, the Canon in 2008, Sony in 2014, it's no surprise there are several quality and tech differences. There'd be differences if they were the same brand. Btw, the Canon file naming structure is typical for blu-ray.
@@saveitforparts Yeah, do a white balance first before recording. If you tell the camera what it should think "white" looks like you should get a more-or-less even colour pallet across the cameras. A simple sheet of printer paper held on a stand where you will be presenting from should do it. De NI2O
If you charge the sony fully you can use a 2 milliamp power bank to run the camera all day using the usb cable provided plugged into the power bank with the camera if you leave the battery in the camera fully charged. There is also a secret mode that allows you to change the recording mode to mp4 recording that can allow you to record for 24 hours. my sony camera is identical but a slightly different model number HDR CX405. Google this model number sony HDR CX405 to find how to change to mp4 setting . Both your model and mine are the same it just has a slightly different camera sensor in it. Also you could put a bit of cotton wool over the microphone on the sony to get rid of wind noise.
Yeah, I definitely prefer the Sony even though the specs are theoretically very similar. I'm hoping I can find another affordable used one before I destroy it completely!
Just ordered a Canon HF10 off Ebay. I'm hyped for it. I LOVE camcorders and I stand by them.
Should I get it because it looks really good for used $60
You know what’s really cool…
This channel. You’re doing cool stuff man.

I have a Vixia HG20, very similar, maybe a bit newer or slight upgrade, but the same spinner hard drive. I like it.
Spectacular video.Thanks.its cool if you use 2nd hand .You can upgrade many many more to come.

I've had some of those on occasion, not sure I have any at the moment though.

The colour temperature is also different between the 2 cameras. Have you tried messing with that in post?
I haven't played with that yet, I could probably change the settings on the cameras a bit more as well.

Well done!
I love canon camcorders. I have 6 Canon vixia hv 40's. They have lots of bells and whistles. Great color on videos.

(patpat) everything has to die sometime, friend.
I have to say, canon's image quality is.. dirty compared to the sony. Could be the encoding chip.

Where did you get these from?
I think I found both of these at local surplus auctions. I tend to get all my stuff used (hence the channel name).
If you want another Sony camera look for the CX 405. They make them new and it'll only cost $200
Can't you run that Sony off a USB power brick?
I haven't actually tried filming with it while it's plugged into USB, that's a good idea.
I literally sleep with my handycam because I got it from my mom and I'm very thankful because I love photography
