  • Tungnath is one of the highest Shiva temples in the world, situated at an altitude of approximately 3,680 meters (12,073 feet) in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India. It is part of the Panch Kedar group of temples, which are of significant importance in Hindu mythology and are dedicated to Lord Shiva. Tungnath also serves as a popular trekking destination, attracting both spiritual pilgrims and adventure enthusiasts alike.
    Tungnath Temple: History and Mythology
The temple has a rich history and mythological background. According to legend, after the Kurukshetra war in the Mahabharata, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva's forgiveness for the sins they committed during the battle. However, Lord Shiva, wanting to avoid them, transformed into a bull (Nandi) and submerged into the ground at various locations. These locations form the five sacred Panch Kedar temples, with Tungnath representing the place where Shiva's arms were revealed.
Tungnath is believed to be over 1,000 years old and is an example of North Indian temple architecture, characterized by its modest and simplistic stone construction. The sanctum is dedicated to Lord Shiva, depicted as a lingam, and is visited by thousands of devotees, especially during the pilgrimage season.
    Trekking to Tungnath
The trek to Tungnath is relatively short but offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath, and Chaukhamba. The trek starts from Chopta, a picturesque village at an elevation of about 2,680 meters (8,790 feet).
Trek Length: Approximately 4 km from Chopta to Tungnath Temple.
Duration: It typically takes 2 to 3 hours to complete, depending on the trekker’s pace and fitness level.
Trek Difficulty: Moderate. The trail is well-paved but involves a steep ascent. It’s a suitable trek for beginners, though the high altitude can make it challenging.
Best Time to Visit: The trek can be done between April and November, with the best times being during the summer (April to June) and post-monsoon (September to November). During the winter months, heavy snow often makes the route inaccessible.
    Scenery Along the Trek
The trail is blessed with stunning landscapes, from dense forests of rhododendrons, oaks, and deodars to expansive alpine meadows. As you ascend, the vegetation thins out, revealing panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and vast, clear skies.
    Chandrashila Peak
For those seeking a more challenging hike, many trekkers extend their journey to Chandrashila Peak, located about 1.5 km above the temple. At an elevation of 4,000 meters (13,123 feet), Chandrashila offers a 360-degree view of some of the most majestic Himalayan ranges, making it one of the most rewarding spots in the region. The trek from Tungnath to Chandrashila takes about an additional 1 to 1.5 hours and is steeper than the initial climb.
    Spiritual Significance
Tungnath, being one of the Panch Kedar temples, holds immense religious significance. It is part of a spiritual journey that Shiva devotees often undertake, visiting the temples in the order of Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar. The temple is only open during specific months of the year, usually from late April to November, after which the priests move the deity to Mukkumath, a village near Chopta, for the winter months.
    Wildlife and Nature
Chopta and Tungnath are part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. If you’re lucky, you might spot animals like the musk deer or various bird species, including the colorful Himalayan monal, the state bird of Uttarakhand.
