@@jewwyjones9760 It wasn't so much safety as it was believe it or not erosion concerns. There was a large amount of damage every year from the large amounts of gravel that got washed off the unpaved sections impacting streams, reservoirs and vegetation in the valley below. So because of that they pretty much said "We're paving it, you can either have a tarmac uphill rally or not hold the event anymore."
RIP Pikes Peak, i know why it was made all tarmac but it took away from the event imo. You couldn't build some hyperfocused tarmac monster and just eat the hill. Look at some of the vehicles used now, the ID-R wouldnt make it up the old hill, same with the pug 208 and the bentley continental, these things are running an inch of ground clearance.
I used to agree with you. I agree in the way that I always loved seeing the Suzuki Escudo and other off-road monsters race up the hill, but changed my mind after I went to the event for the first time and saw the ID-R break the record. The Porsche class is also awesome. The Hoonicorn and Hoonipig running up the mountain have been amazing to watch also. In the end, paving it opened the hillclimb up to more competitors which in turn increased the competition. It also made it easier and safer for spectators to get around in the dark and when the bad weather inevitably rolls through. I think in the end, it was a net positive, but agree that paving the remaining portion of the road did initially take away from the experience. I still go every year though! The fan fest on the Friday before the race in downtown COS is great also. The Main Street is closed and a lot of the race cars line up and you can go meet the team and get up close to the cars. Met Romain Dumas, Rhys Millen, Travis Pastrana, and Ken Block over the last 6 years. Highly recommend if you haven’t been! 🙌🏼🏎️💨

I really dig these vintage Pikes Peak runs
I was there that year, even got to chat with Marcus a bit. That was a properly manic machine lol!
Marcus putting in work!!!
Absolutamente genial 👏👏👏👏
One of my all-time fav monster
Paving this road is just disrespectful
Unfortunately they said pave it or we're cancelling the event. So at least they didn't take the easy route & cut ties.
@@jdmmike7225was it a safety issue? Who demanded it get paved?

My fiesta didn't have this power. Is there a button or something you have to push???
You dont even need a button, all you need is remove everything and build a 800hp rally car inside your fiesta's body 😉
