Nah both of them are his successor. Mello is the risk taker and danger side of L while Near is the cold emotionless side of L. Combine them together you get L

Of course, Matt died for him. No doubt that he feels pained and sad about that.
But Mello would have never sacrificed his life just to catch Kira.
And do you remember his reaction when Lidner told him about their plan?
He broke down... He knew all of them would probably die (if he was right and their Death Note was just a fake one).
But I doubt he would've reacted that hard because of the possible death of some people he don't even really know.
He was with the mafia for 5 years ;)
The only one of these people who could have meant something to him was Near.
I don't say that there has to be some sexual attraction between Near and Mello.
Even if the "fear" Mello showed 5 years ago, when he was supposed to work together with Near, was like all young men would probably react if they were supposed to get close to their crush *smirk.
But I do not doubt that Mello loved Near and vice versa.

His expression when he was supposed to work with Near was pure disgust nothing else.
Also he broke down because he realised he will have to die.
He probably thought of that plan for a long time but didnt put it in practice because it wasnt necesary as he says "if i dont do it..." hes trying to convince himself of going with the plan despite his fear.
You also assume hes thinking rationally because no sane person would go that far to catch a murderer that has nothing to do with him and get nothing in return but he isbt rational.
Mello has a huge inferiority complex which manifests the most when it comes to Near.
He didnt allow himself to be killed just for Near, in a way he was but mostly i think it also has to do with his mental issuses "if i do this im going to be better than him because its thanks to me that he lives" you know?
