Not everyone knows about the 5.5 mod. It makes the game much better, even better than 3. The mod developers still work on it to this day, there was a new release less than a month ago.
I guess I get to be unpopular but I honestly had no problem with this game. It had the task of bringing the series back from the relatively unpopular Heroes 4 and IMO it did a fine job of it. The various factions all felt different (which was a problem Heroes, including the vaunted 3, always had) and each was good in its own way. Honestly I think you're vastly overstating how much you needed to min-max to play this well. Sure you can pick the "overpowered" heroes and do well but even if you didn't you could certainly win and clear maps fast.
Whoa, just got to this: Who would ever say there was less strategy involved in this then in previous HoMM? I can't do anything but flatly disagree there. All of the tricks you used in previous HoMM still work in 5, you're just not using them here. Splitting your stacks into smaller stacks to get more actions, kiting opponents (works far more effectively here than it ever did in previous versions, especially for the faster factions like elves)... I mean what the heck? I guess this makes me sound like a Heroes 5 fanboy (not at all my favorite is still 2) but I just can't stand hearing such unwarranted critiques without saying anything...
Murkglow Because everything is initiative based instead of turn based most of the tricks I use for the previous heroes games do not work as well in H5. Kiting is possible but a lot more tedious and you have to have a REALLY fast troop vs a slow troop. Shielding a troop from being attacked is a lot harder, and almost impossible if that troop is 4 squares. The square based grid means a troop can be hit from 9 directions instead of 6. VS a hero no troop is safe because they can attack without spells ( and for quite a bit of damage I might add ). And finally it takes a very long time to get the higher level troops, which means you're going to be using the lower level troops and therefore taking a lot of losses, as they have low hit points. And lastly, the spell selection is far more limited and you get fewer of them in your mage guild. Where's cure, blind, dispel ( yes I know cleansing, but it's level 2 and no longer works all the time ), shield etc?
Chris67132 Sure, some tricks from previous games work less well than they did and I can agree that 4square monsters are harder to protect then they were in older games but the tricks still work. Instead of splitting into 2 stacks to protect your archers in a corner you now use 3 (or more to have decoy stacks or less if one is a 4 square guy/you're defending against 4 square guys), most 4square fatties really don't need to be protected that much (many are fast, have evasive abilities, or just kill things fast enough), you can't avoid heroes but that works just as well in your favor (and is the main way one kites early), ect... It's different in a number of ways but it's not that different and it certainly allows for ample amounts of tactical combat. As for spells, yeah they got trimmed down alot (or moved, Blind still exists it's just a level 4 spell) but then alot of them rarely if ever got used by many people. At the same time alot of "spell like" abilities got added both in the skill tree (which is one of my main gripes with the game, all the unique hidden skills that you don't know about without looking them up) as well as in racial abilities. There are probably less options overall sure but again, I don't know if it lost that much quality gameplay because of those trimmings.
It's a copy of H3, therefore a good game, if you play it blindly, not looking on the ugly interface or the untalented acting(campaign). Also I liked H4, it was different with the heroes actually fighting and being able to die.
Heroes 3 is a completely dumbed down game(compared to this one at least). Heores V is FAR harder to master. The guy on the video and others dont like Heroes V, because its to much for their brain. They are used to Heroes 3, where everything is made simple, and mostly everyone has everything the others have(especialy magic because of limited options), and its mostly about faction power, rather than skill. In Heroes V you dont get away with that mentality. You have to be good at many different things, and if you mess up in one of them, that may cost you the game. So unlike Heroes 3 where a LARGE portion of the games, are decided when you choose a faction(choose Necropolis to win), in this one things are decided, after you have made many poor or good decisions.
One of my favorite HoMM 5 maps is Duel Of The Titans, it's large, has 6 slots, and all towns start with a higher town level giving you access to the 7th tier monster quite soon.
People take this series way too seriously. Probably they grieve more the "death" of this franchise than their own mother's. I just don't know why peple have this strange H3 fetish when that game also had many problems.
The answer is simple. The Heroes 3 is a completely dumbed down game, filled with broken exploits designed so that dumb/lazy people can win the game easy. And people like this guy, dont like challenging games, which actualy makes them think. They prefer the dumbed down easy Heroes 3. Notice how he kept crying throughout all his playthrough, on how the Heroes 3 "cheats", were not available on this one. And ofcorse he needed them to be available, because even after all the save/loads he made, and even in this easy map, with a weakned AI(Ai killed eachother), he was getting his ass kicked.
I actually liked heroes V, the only problem im having with it, as well as the other heroes games past #5, is that as chris here said, the menus are so slooow and tedious.
Nice play. I kinda agree that this game isn't that balanced, but I still play it today too. Would like to see some more videos with other expert gameplay, since there aren't other such videos in youtube. :)
I prefer Homm3. But the campaign in Homm5 is a lot better. In Homm3, the campaign totally exists, but it's probably the easiest most basic part of that game, where as in Homm5 they went with a real story and interesting quests. Whether you like the story or not is subjective of course, but I thought it was pretty good.
Ever since Heroes Of Might And Magic 3, they started adding or subtracting useless or important things that really changed the whole dynamic and point of the game for me. When 3D0 and New World Computing were on it, they were ON IT.
Best of the series in my opinion.. I spend so many hours on this game, and still can't, but ONLY play maps, no campaigns.. love the HUGE maps.. the only reason I haven't been able to get into 6 and 7 is cuz they don't come with many cool huge maps, if they did I'd spend hours on those too.. before 5, all the heroes were the same, so 5 just ads to it, better graphics, same type of gameplay and creatures, so of course 5 is better even if 3 was a classic, 5 just improved on it. 6 and on are basically different games, but one can get used to it.
I think this was the last game I ever bought where I bought the actual hard copy, what a way for the era of the hard copy game to go out with a whimper.
Have you ever considered heroes like Deirdre, and trying to work towards Howl of Terror? Since you build your hero up for the long game and all. Howl of Terror is devastatingly effective if you can get the skills needed for it. And since one of those is summoning magic you wouldn't be giving up the fire traps either, save for at the start. I know Naadir can also work towards it, but I consider his specialty to be a bit weak outside of the very early stages.
Chris67132 I've always relied heavily on master of pain/master of curses (which I pick up on necromancy heroes anyway) and banshee howl. I actually have never relied on fire trap before, though this vid is telling me I sorely underestimated it. And even if you don't manage to get it, you're still taking mostly useful skills. And having Deirdre as your main means your banshee howl is still giving -2 morale and luck which is generally quite impactful.

Chris, if you haven't yet played Heroes 6, give it a chance. I've been playing the HoMM series since the first game and I honestly feel as though Heroes 6 is the second best game in the entire series, right after Heroes 3. Sure, that's just my opinion, but give it a chance. I love your videos btw, keep it up :)
I have, yeah. It was terrible, honestly. I loved the first two, but the third was just a disaster of a game. Aside from the amazing art and sound direction, the game was a mess. Then the expansion set came out and I remember it being even more unplayable.
Seems you're an experienced heroes III player but this is no heroes V expert playthrough. Losing 11 hounds in the begining ( those units are really good even if they are off faction) and going with that's just my luck is not the way to go. Also you seem to be talking about overpowered heroes but all heroes have advantages and disadvantages depending on the size of the map and faction of opponents - all factions have at least a good hero for the early game and most have a hero which has the edge late game. The skills system in this game is awesome, possibly the best in the whole series. The main problem with the game are the map graphics. It just doesn't radiate the happy fantasy feeling heroes III does. But they had to go 3d because this is the standard now.
They didn't have to go with 3d. Pre-rendered 2d would have been much better, and could have looked much better. Successful games had come out at the same time as 2d pre-rendered. It's just a lack of imagination on the part of the developers. "We have to go 3d because everyone else is doing it." Losing 11 hellhounds in the beginning was the autobattle, actually not sure why I didn't replay. I guess I didn't care because I can't upgrade them. Saying the skill system is the best in the series isn't saying too much, as the skill system in the heroes series has always sucked. The system in H5 has a lot of filler and useless skills though, one reason why I bash it.
A question, Chris, have you heard of a series called Age of Wonders? It might not be Heroes, but, the first game was a heroes clone and the series since evolved to become something quite unique. You say that the genre is dead, and you might be right, but there are still good games out there that at least have similarities :)

They made the shift to 3D because it is cheaper to produce than 2D and it means that they could just use the same models for the campaign's cutscenes, instead of making 3D models for an otherwise 2D game.
H3 made sprites out of the character models, which is how it was able to run even on mediocre computers at the time. Even THAT is harder to do than just animating it in a 3D space but they did it that way to keep the game smooth during battles and the filesize low. There weren't many models, just sprites. Also, making environments out of sprites like they did is extremely time-consuming and it's much easier to make a tree and copy-paste it.
Chris67132 I don't think 3D is the issue.. It's more the camera perspective and UI interaction, silly cutscenes and art direction. You definitely can produce something similar to Heroes 2 or 3 with real-time 3D graphics giving you the benefit of both.
DiscomfortingGazeMan with nowadays technology creating sprites procedurally and fast isn't an issue anymore... Whether characters or environments can be automated and are rendered most of the time. Handpainted 3D assets take about as long to create as hand painted sprites, same for a procedural workflow
***** Animating in 2D takes a lot longer than creating a model and rigging it to move however you need it to. You can do 2D stuff with less experience but that doesn't make it less costly or less time-consuming.
You have a strange way of starting a let's play, by talking about how you don't like the game. I consider H5 the best in the series. With 8 fill factions and 21 unit varieties per faction, it has more content than any other Heroes game. It strikes a balance between the earlier games with seriously exploitable mechanics, and the newer games where all of the overpowered strats are nerfed into a flat plain of equality
y u no like heroes5? It didnt ruin anything and I'd rather play that than play heroes 3 again, I think a bit of a problem on it is that it really looks a lot worse than heroes 3 with shitty 3d, but it good cause it new.
Why are the hero inventory and creature stats, hero statistics, etc look so fucking ugly. It's 2 number higher than heroes 3 and H3 was much more beautiful. H5 gameplay is pretty much a mix of H3 and H4 but the design is like H2 or a cardgame. The inventory slots are just squares not even showing to what part they belong... Still it's much better than H7, the 'God of all bugs'.
Enemies usually get one retaliation after they have moved. The turns depend on the enemy speed. I think spell time may be just a set amount of time which is independent of individual enemy speed.
@@Chris67132 well, here is the reason of my question- because there is spell in game "puppet master" which obviously allows to controll enemy moves for 3 turns - on exact level and it slows enemy a bit either. im often using this one and i never controlled enemy for 3 turns. i simply controll him for 1 move. and tnx a lot for retaliation mechanic explanation !

Well I have some other H5 vids that might have that scenario. Really I doubt if it would be a whole lot different than any other map vs the AI. Play smarter and take on the AI only when you're at an advantage.

yeah this game really made me hate heroes games and i loved them back in the day... also if you ever get the chance you should try the frist 2 disciples games (the first one is kindda indie looking and you might not like it graphiks style but the second one has a more gothic medieval look) combat is static (melee in front support in the back) but it had an original set of rules for the time it came out (1999 -2000 and something ) love your vids and your comment is not annoying like other people out there :D
Chris67132 The problem was not that it was 3D, HoMM 6 had 3D as well but its 3d was way better. The reason was the pan of the camera and the ratio of items on the map. Before the expansion you couldn't zoom out as far as you did the maps felt to small and the size of the the trees and objects on the map seemed to be to be big which made it the Warcraft 3 feeling that I as well really hated it was also kind of blizzard cartoonish style which I don't really mind except that not on HoMM. If you check out videos of the upcoming new HoMM 7 you will notice that while it is 3d and you can pan the camera around and what not ... you don't have to do it. that is how they should have done the graphics. The 3d they is very similar to the HoMM 3 feeling while still looking way better.
DeadLikeMeJ I do remember when I fist bought the original H5 that the camera was even more restricted. Thanks for pointing that out, I'd forgotten. Also the small feel of the maps. Too bad you can't play the larger map sizes because the AI takes too long :-( I'll remain open to the idea of buying H7 if the reaction of the veteran Heroes players is positive enough. We'll see.
Chris67132 I just wish people like you would help them, they just finished with the beta but there is still time to comment. I hope there is a way a person like you could send feedback. Most of the things you point out needed a change - such as damage to be seen not only in combat and so on ... but in general after the expansion I believe they made HoMM 5 not so bad ... it is unfortunet that before the expansion it was a really shitty game ... Its not often when you see an expansion actually fixes the game to the point that it makes it good the way it made heroes 5 from crap to pretty much fun and decent. HoMM 6 tried to take a different path - they tried and it failed. With HoMM 7 they are going back to what they know but at the same time I have quite a lot of worries. Would love if you could make a video response on what you think from what we can see for far from the videos they made. They still didnt go back to hax which is kind of disappointing and the whole skill trees seem to work in a worring way ... I am looking at it and it just seems like. Can you do another HoMM 5 game ? with another faction (not academy) also please place enemies this time so there wont be all duplicates and we will get to see the new factions. Naadir/Necro is not abusive enough, Academy 3 magic schools rush with 'my mana is neverending' hero was king in HoMM5 with the golems resurected by casting fireball on them as second best but somewhat harder to do in multiplayer. HoMM5 was fun but the terrible map design and releasing an early alpha as finished game killed it. Russian programmers always drunk hey - if memory serves - those cretins even took some 2 weeks collective vacation during the game development :D
Try to play heroes 6 you will want to vomit after 5 min, they realy kill heroes with that game, what they realy need to do is 3d map looking like 2d, and exact game play like heroes 3, new ai and new stuff.

Tried 5 and it was garbage. HoMM3 all the way. I can still play that to this day. Idk if i should bother with 6 or 7. HoMM 4 had good ideas, you could make the same towns play totally different depending on hero and path you took. Too bad they didnt flesh it out. 5 shouldve expanded on that.

Hello.Who can explain me why I can't beat a hard on disputed island small map as necropolis,main hero kaspar. Ok.So im a friggin necro,im 4 levels ahead,2 mines (6k gold per day) yet the opponent a.i. has larger army,smaller level,of course less gold per day and still beats me after 2-3 months.How is that possible ? Also after he defeated me he suddenly had an equal stronger army ... i basically buyed the hero back and recruited everything after the last week and still lost,the thing is there was no OTHER HERO to giv him army SO WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED ?! This is retarded.I used to play H3 in the past but today i got so pissed in H5 cuz I don't understand wtf is this shit,really ..................... Any suggestions ?! =\

This is the worst heroes game that i've played and i played all of them except the first and 7th game, the cartooney style is making me puke, the game runs so damn slow and the AI's turns take forever, the camera angles fucking suck and they make me seasick. The units are boring and they have 3 upgrades instead of 2... and you are forced to build your town in a linear predecided path. Heroes 6 is alot better but still really bad compared to heroes 3.
Well everyone has different taste I guess, but I generally really liked this game.. Heroes 3 might be better, but this game is really good in my opinion as well. I like playing it.

I've always relied heavily on master of pain/master of curses (which I pick up on necromancy heroes anyway) and banshee howl. I actually have never relied on fire trap before, though this vid is telling me I sorely underestimated it.
And even if you don't manage to get it, you're still taking mostly useful skills. And having Deirdre as your main means your banshee howl is still giving -2 morale and luck which is generally quite impactful.

Chris, if you haven't yet played Heroes 6, give it a chance. I've been playing the HoMM series since the first game and I honestly feel as though Heroes 6 is the second best game in the entire series, right after Heroes 3. Sure, that's just my opinion, but give it a chance. I love your videos btw, keep it up :)

I have, yeah. It was terrible, honestly. I loved the first two, but the third was just a disaster of a game. Aside from the amazing art and sound direction, the game was a mess. Then the expansion set came out and I remember it being even more unplayable.
Seems you're an experienced heroes III player but this is no heroes V expert playthrough.
Losing 11 hounds in the begining ( those units are really good even if they are off faction) and going with that's just my luck is not the way to go. Also you seem to be talking about overpowered heroes but all heroes have advantages and disadvantages depending on the size of the map and faction of opponents - all factions have at least a good hero for the early game and most have a hero which has the edge late game. The skills system in this game is awesome, possibly the best in the whole series.
The main problem with the game are the map graphics. It just doesn't radiate the happy fantasy feeling heroes III does. But they had to go 3d because this is the standard now.
They didn't have to go with 3d. Pre-rendered 2d would have been much better, and could have looked much better. Successful games had come out at the same time as 2d pre-rendered. It's just a lack of imagination on the part of the developers. "We have to go 3d because everyone else is doing it."
Losing 11 hellhounds in the beginning was the autobattle, actually not sure why I didn't replay. I guess I didn't care because I can't upgrade them.
Saying the skill system is the best in the series isn't saying too much, as the skill system in the heroes series has always sucked. The system in H5 has a lot of filler and useless skills though, one reason why I bash it.

A question, Chris, have you heard of a series called Age of Wonders? It might not be Heroes, but, the first game was a heroes clone and the series since evolved to become something quite unique. You say that the genre is dead, and you might be right, but there are still good games out there that at least have similarities :)

They made the shift to 3D because it is cheaper to produce than 2D and it means that they could just use the same models for the campaign's cutscenes, instead of making 3D models for an otherwise 2D game.
Not sure if that is the case, since H3 used 3d rendered graphics and you can use the same models for the cutscenes.
H3 made sprites out of the character models, which is how it was able to run even on mediocre computers at the time. Even THAT is harder to do than just animating it in a 3D space but they did it that way to keep the game smooth during battles and the filesize low.
There weren't many models, just sprites. Also, making environments out of sprites like they did is extremely time-consuming and it's much easier to make a tree and copy-paste it.
Chris67132 I don't think 3D is the issue.. It's more the camera perspective and UI interaction, silly cutscenes and art direction. You definitely can produce something similar to Heroes 2 or 3 with real-time 3D graphics giving you the benefit of both.
DiscomfortingGazeMan with nowadays technology creating sprites procedurally and fast isn't an issue anymore... Whether characters or environments can be automated and are rendered most of the time. Handpainted 3D assets take about as long to create as hand painted sprites, same for a procedural workflow

Animating in 2D takes a lot longer than creating a model and rigging it to move however you need it to. You can do 2D stuff with less experience but that doesn't make it less costly or less time-consuming.

I consider H5 the best in the series. With 8 fill factions and 21 unit varieties per faction, it has more content than any other Heroes game. It strikes a balance between the earlier games with seriously exploitable mechanics, and the newer games where all of the overpowered strats are nerfed into a flat plain of equality

Why are the hero inventory and creature stats, hero statistics, etc look so fucking ugly. It's 2 number higher than heroes 3 and H3 was much more beautiful. H5 gameplay is pretty much a mix of H3 and H4 but the design is like H2 or a cardgame. The inventory slots are just squares not even showing to what part they belong... Still it's much better than H7, the 'God of all bugs'.
could anyone here explain when enemies retaliate in this game and whats real definition of "turn" - when it comes to spell time ???
Enemies usually get one retaliation after they have moved. The turns depend on the enemy speed. I think spell time may be just a set amount of time which is independent of individual enemy speed.
@@Chris67132 well, here is the reason of my question- because there is spell in game "puppet master" which obviously allows to controll enemy moves for 3 turns - on exact level and it slows enemy a bit either. im often using this one and i never controlled enemy for 3 turns. i simply controll him for 1 move. and tnx a lot for retaliation mechanic explanation !

Well I have some other H5 vids that might have that scenario. Really I doubt if it would be a whole lot different than any other map vs the AI. Play smarter and take on the AI only when you're at an advantage.

yeah this game really made me hate heroes games and i loved them back in the day... also if you ever get the chance you should try the frist 2 disciples games (the first one is kindda indie looking and you might not like it graphiks style but the second one has a more gothic medieval look) combat is static (melee in front support in the back) but it had an original set of rules for the time it came out (1999 -2000 and something ) love your vids and your comment is not annoying like other people out there :D

Chris67132 The problem was not that it was 3D, HoMM 6 had 3D as well but its 3d was way better. The reason was the pan of the camera and the ratio of items on the map. Before the expansion you couldn't zoom out as far as you did the maps felt to small and the size of the the trees and objects on the map seemed to be to be big which made it the Warcraft 3 feeling that I as well really hated it was also kind of blizzard cartoonish style which I don't really mind except that not on HoMM.
If you check out videos of the upcoming new HoMM 7 you will notice that while it is 3d and you can pan the camera around and what not ... you don't have to do it. that is how they should have done the graphics. The 3d they is very similar to the HoMM 3 feeling while still looking way better.
DeadLikeMeJ I do remember when I fist bought the original H5 that the camera was even more restricted. Thanks for pointing that out, I'd forgotten. Also the small feel of the maps. Too bad you can't play the larger map sizes because the AI takes too long :-(
I'll remain open to the idea of buying H7 if the reaction of the veteran Heroes players is positive enough. We'll see.

Most of the things you point out needed a change - such as damage to be seen not only in combat and so on ... but in general after the expansion I believe they made HoMM 5 not so bad ... it is unfortunet that before the expansion it was a really shitty game ...
Its not often when you see an expansion actually fixes the game to the point that it makes it good the way it made heroes 5 from crap to pretty much fun and decent.
HoMM 6 tried to take a different path - they tried and it failed. With HoMM 7 they are going back to what they know but at the same time I have quite a lot of worries.
Would love if you could make a video response on what you think from what we can see for far from the videos they made.
They still didnt go back to hax which is kind of disappointing and the whole skill trees seem to work in a worring way ... I am looking at it and it just seems like.
Can you do another HoMM 5 game ? with another faction (not academy) also please place enemies this time so there wont be all duplicates and we will get to see the new factions.

Naadir/Necro is not abusive enough, Academy 3 magic schools rush with 'my mana is neverending' hero was king in HoMM5 with the golems resurected by casting fireball on them as second best but somewhat harder to do in multiplayer. HoMM5 was fun but the terrible map design and releasing an early alpha as finished game killed it. Russian programmers always drunk hey - if memory serves - those cretins even took some 2 weeks collective vacation during the game development :D
I loved H3, but I like H5 quite a lot as well. H6 isnt that bad either, but little boring.

Chris67132 I actually liked heroes 6. I liked it a lot more than heroes 4 or 5 because they somehow reminded me of old heroes 3 with a new twist. It was fun to play with my wife. Just that there were so few maps sadly and most iif not all of them were reused maps from capaign.

Tried 5 and it was garbage. HoMM3 all the way. I can still play that to this day. Idk if i should bother with 6 or 7. HoMM 4 had good ideas, you could make the same towns play totally different depending on hero and path you took. Too bad they didnt flesh it out. 5 shouldve expanded on that.
For me 5 is best in the series.
In other words.. you thought that because your good at Heroes 3(dumbed down game), that you would be good at Heroes 5, but then when you tried it, you got your ass kicked. Then you went back to Heroes 3 wimpering.

Ok.So im a friggin necro,im 4 levels ahead,2 mines (6k gold per day) yet the opponent a.i. has larger army,smaller level,of course less gold per day and still beats me after 2-3 months.How is that possible ? Also after he defeated me he suddenly had an equal stronger army ... i basically buyed the hero back and recruited everything after the last week and still lost,the thing is there was no OTHER HERO to giv him army SO WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED ?! This is retarded.I used to play H3 in the past but today i got so pissed in H5 cuz I don't understand wtf is this shit,really .....................

Hehe!. So you thought that because you are pro at Heroes 3, that you would also be pro at Heroes 5?. Heroes 3 is a completely dumbed down game. Heroes5 on the other hand, is a very challenging game. And this is the real reason why so many Heroes 3 players cry about Heroes5, and bash it.

This is the worst heroes game that i've played and i played all of them except the first and 7th game, the cartooney style is making me puke, the game runs so damn slow and the AI's turns take forever, the camera angles fucking suck and they make me seasick. The units are boring and they have 3 upgrades instead of 2... and you are forced to build your town in a linear predecided path. Heroes 6 is alot better but still really bad compared to heroes 3.
Well everyone has different taste I guess, but I generally really liked this game.. Heroes 3 might be better, but this game is really good in my opinion as well. I like playing it.
