well, thats def true, but i doubt they get enough pressure to dig in all the way to the surface underneath the snow anyway, so wouldnt they try to grip the snow itself as well as possible? (plz dont take me as a hater, im just trying to figure out exactly y they do it)
narrow tires cut through the snow, unlike wide tires which float on top.
they are also probably studded

well, ok, they probly have better side traction, but dont they accelerate/brake much worse?
