Chip Foose and Jesse James were not on American Hot Rods, they are EX employees of Boyd Coddington shop and were already having their own shops and tv shows when American Hot Rods started
I used to watch this show with the ole mighty Boyd Coddington! I used to think to myself ..... this should be shown at business school ... and students should be told this isnt how you run your business and treat your employees ! 😮😮😮
It's not worth the money to bust your butt every day only to be dumped on and treated like crap. Never considering the personal lives of your employees is a common failure of the business owner. In the end, what did the dedication and abuse get them? The guy died and their jobs were lost. Look after your own life first!
100%....the "owners" don't realize that the people are the business, without them you have nothing. I've worked with teamsters in NYC and Mormons in SLC, all over North America. I always thanked people for working for me (as long as they weren't F'ing me) and treated them with respect, and in turn, got respect back. I was the site manager of a construction site and had a crew of 8 working directly for me. When it turned out the paychecks were going to be late on a friday and not ready until monday, many of the guys were freaking out because some had child support to pay, some had rent etc. So I covered those guy's pay out of my own pocket. Word got back to the office and the president called me up "why'd you do that"? Me: why should they suffer for the office failing? The very least you can do is make sure they got paid when they were supposed to. "yeah, you're right, how much did you put out"? Me: about 5K. Word got out throughout the company (they had 4 diff sites going at the time) EVERYONE wanted to work for me lol. "damn, he takes care of his guys".
@muskokamike127 wow lucky you had the money to do that. a lot of our managers get less take home pay after deductions. We the workers do standby and overtime. The managers don't they are taken off the standby. And they're consolidated pay so no overtime.
@@chrishart8548 yeah I had MANY a managerial job that was like that.....waiting for a truck to show up on a saturday night while my workers were making time and a half and I was making zero. This one though, I made sure I was hourly, and I was putting in over 100 hrs a week.
American hot rod and American chooper . Had the same issues sort of asshole owners and knuckle head supervisors. But a lot of talent from the actual workers
Dwayne was the behind most of the drama with the other employees and went running to Boyd hoping to score more brownie points by narc'ing on the other guys for any small infringment. I don't recall him doing anything on that show of value except give the network their drama clips for the, "On the next episode of American Hot Rod..." (cue yelling). Watch the clip of when Brad Quits, that says everything to Dwayne and his attitude to everyone.
By the time the show introduced Boyd Coddington to the general public, he was no longer capable of doing the builds that had made him famous. It was the staff that carried the show. That show was all conflict, all the time. It was a perfect example of a toxic and antagonistic work environment. Like 'American Chopper', it was a show that became unwatchable rather quickly if you were more into the cars than the needless drama.
Dwayne treated a lot of the guys poorly on that show. PS: I thought this video was about the staff, you touched on a couple of people, some that weren't on the actual show, the rest of this was about Boyd.
The chassis builder with the huge mustache was the best...he did his job, didn't take crap from anyone and didn't mingle with the other guys. Stayed to himself and was MATURE.
Al. Yeah I liked Al a lot, and Roy, but I think everyone liked Roy. Roy was actually an old school guy that showed you how to do stuff. He tried teaching a lot of people but I liked him teaching Tomas the most, I think because Tomas spoke limited English and Roy was deaf, so rather than talk they just kinda motioned out stuff.
I loved all the cars they built but I hated the drama. Dwyane was an A grade bully and a a- hole. The only thing Boyd did was put his name on the completed car, nothing else. It was the crew that kept that place together.
Between Boyd's ego, Dwayne being an ass, the unrealistic builddeadlines, the drama etc, it all leads to unhappy employees. I still think there was something going on between Charley and Boyd's wife, since she was so upset when Charley left Boyd.
If you’ve watched Wheeler Dealers when they filmed in California there is an episode where Mike Brewer goes to a shop and Mike Curtis helps him. I just don’t remember what episode.
Foose Signed all his creative rights to Boyd. Anything he designed became Boyed intellectual copyright. So he decided to leave AND take his designs with him. I think Foose was sued but ended up winning. Which is why Boyd didn't like him anymore, he felt the designs were his because Foose was his employee.
That isn't what happened at all. When you work for a company anything you make on the their time they own, even new ideas. Foose also didn't decide to leave he was laid off after Boyd went bankrupt. Foose then made his own shop and hired most of the unemployed staff he worked with Boyd which lead to Boyd hating him on the show.
What always piss me off is when the owner of the shop is credited as the builder, not the employees. This is the main one. The employees deserves the credit!
A boss that thinks it's funny to promise the impossible EVERY job gets old quick. Employees realize they're just getting usedto the detriment of their own happiness.
The shops that did these shows used them to prop up their small businesses. Both American Chopper/Hotrod made more money from the tv shows then their business dealings. Paul Sr had to fire almost the entire staff between the last season and Sr vs Jr while Boyd's wife had to shut down the shop within 6 months of his passing.
Unless the show was shot this way intentionally. Leaving out the lead up to the friction. It felt very heavy and saddening to see people treated poorly. People work to live. Not live to work .. The guy who wanted to drop his child to school be a touch late in the morning. But work excessive hours, weekends and more got talked down to. Shows the true character of a person. Sad on so many levels.
