I am getting back into backpacking after a long absence. I made a lot of my gear in the past, but my needs have changed, along with the materials available. I really appreciate your projects and videos. It is clear that you have given great thought to your designs and processes. This tent is an outstanding design!
My opinion is that your MYOG videos are the best and I don't mean that like "yeah, they're good" I mean that they are the best MYOG videos currently available, so I'm very happy to see a new one. I've watched your quilt video multiple times. Maybe I'm not using the right search terms but there's very few people making videos about making their own gear. A lot of the gear plans/patterns I've found online look fairly dated. There's a channel called redoleary4 who has a few videos of making stuff sacks and hammocks, nice simple projects for beginner sewers like me. It's these kinds of videos that made me buy a sewing machine. So far I've only done simple gear projects like stuff sacks and some simple clothes for my kid but I'm hoping that I'll end up making tricky stuff like you do.
Wow thanks for the kind words bud. Yeah I completely agree with what you're saying, information and plans for projects are sparse and what you do find is usually not very modern or high quality. I wish There was someone creating and selling modern outdoor gear plans.
Extremely well done. I made a floorless version that is nearly identical otherwise. This is one of the BEST designs for a 2-person, and I would recommend your plans to anyone else interested in making a similar tent.
Great looking tent. I am 174cm and in both my 2.1m long dome tents, the bottom of my sleeping bag is pretty much always wet by the morning, with most of my tramping being in Fiordland and Southern alps of NZ, I really like the length your tent has and the better materials. Cheers
That is great! I love your design and how you made it all one piece. The use of shock cord for the tub tie outs to utilize the same stake as the pitched roof was genius.

This video and project tent you have done and created is AWESOME man! I've been looking around for something similar in the weight dept, and not compromising with the ease of use and fabric choices and ykk zips, I'm a taller dude as well right about 6'1 and around 190lbs. I love that ya sized it with your trekking poles. That's something that has steered me away from Zpacks, 6moons and a lot of other tent makers. I want something light, but durable and waterproof, but don't also wanna have to readjust my trekking poles after hiking 15 miles and having to shorten/lengthen them to set my tent up. Really EXCELLENT tent man, Thanks for sharing it with us! Looking forward to some upcoming projects of yours =)

I would totally buy a tent like this, wish there was something like this available. There are may options out there but always missing something essential. I really like the choice of tent floor fabric to avoid having to carry and setup extra ground sheet.

Its definitely hard finding info on anything other than tarps, even with the net tent. I'm glad you're selling the pattern because I'm buying it. Interestingly for a tarp set up I went with their 1.6 oz HyperD pu4000 because it was better as far as weight and waterproofing for the bucket of my net tent, and used the .67 noseeum mesh. The tarps were 1.1 oz Realtree camo and the 1.1oz silnylon. Weight can increase depending on coating and denier. This is one thing I hate about the weight listings they use in the description. So the Realtree was really 1.7 for half yard and 1.24 for the other. My total pack weight was 1.5lb and 1.3lb. I made two just in case of a rip. When I was reading about silnyon and silpoly I read many forums that had far more bad experiences with the silpoly even though it's better as far as not stretching when wet or weight. Thanks for the videos.

I was impressed by the zpax double design, but annoyed the guys i know who own this UL, all have had small tears, and had to use the warranty. So I've been mulling around maybe creating my own ...and bingo! A++ in design, and the layout of your REASONING.

This tent design is almost perfect in my opinion! What do you think about a asymmetrical roof? I think it would give you a bit more headspace where you need it. And one tip: Instead of buying expensive seam seal silicone, just dilute neutral silicone with terpentine substitute until it has a syrup like consistency and apply with a brush :)
Really inspired by this video! Been planning to do some sort of tarp shelter, but I love my tents, and live in a very wet area, so a bathtub floor and netting are pretty big features for me. Been spending a lot of time on SketchUp, and my supplies from RBTR have now arrived... I'm building something very similar to this, but solo-sized - the only difference I plan on is a minor cat cut on the ridge seam - hoping that will help with improving pitch and rippling. I'm hiking the JMT in August/September, and plan to have it built and tested out well before that. Thank you for the inspiration!! You've done some fantastic stuff.
Thanks man! The cat cut on the ridge line is a good idea. I'd recommend a real small one in order to reduce the amount of headroom it will eat up (or extra weight it will add if you compensate for the reduced headroom by making the tent taller). Good luck with the shelter... would be great if you found a way to share it! and enjoy the JMT.. such an amazing trail.

Ha, picture next to Lower Rae Lake; was there last week! Used my Winter 12 Membrane SilPoly tarp (.93oz /yd, 20oz overall), thinking about getting your plans to build a DCF tent. Nice work!
Beautiful! Very well thought out details and materials. I love the basic Zpacks design with it's simplicity and symmetrical A-frame shape with the option of opening the tent up completely from both sides for maximum ventilation. I also prefer the 2 half moon doors, which the Six Moons Designs Haven does not have. But I would like to see it available in a less expensive build than Zpacks offers. I'm also a big fan of the Sierra Designs single wall tents because of the door/awning design. The doors can be adjusted VERY easily and instantly while still lying in my bag! This is great if you go to sleep with the doors wide open and it starts raining or gets windy or cold in the middle of the night-a quick reach up and zip zip and back to sleep. I see the ultimate design being a marriage of the Zpacks basic design with half moon Sierra Designs style doors/awnings. We all have our fantasies. Good for you - you made your fantasy reality! I'm not as ambitious as you are.
This tent is incredible! Im a hammock camper and i've been putting off buying a tent for ages because I cant find one that I love in terms of weight, price, simplicity, etc. I think I may consider trying to re-create something like this.

The plans to this would be awesome. I am a single mom of three small kids and I want a tent like this to take them backpacking with. My oldest is 6 so it would have to be a two or three person tent and it needs to be light as that I will have to carry most of the weight. 👍❤

Great job. I am considering a DIY tent and that's the same basic design I had in mind. You used a heavier floor fabric than I was planning, but still came in at 2 pounds. I might follow your lead if I get the guts to do this. Thanks for the inspiration.
I hiked 800+ miles on the AT this year and I'm going to do the whole thing starting next March. I'm absolutely going to make my own version of your tent which in my opinion is the best tent I've seen. Your must haves are exactly the same as mine, although I'm just 2" taller than you. Please approach gear manufacturers and tell them this design and the materials address every concern UL hikers have and there would be a line to buy this. I can't justify paying $600 for a Duplex where the cuben material is not going to last a thru-hike. Just too many instances of it failing at stitch points and holes in the tent wall and mesh. Tarptent models that are good are too heavy...etc. You've ticked all the boxes and I especially love the bathtub floor choice. No groundcloth! Yippee. Well done!

I agree, that's just about the perfect design. You did a fantastic job! The bright green thread on the the black makes for a nice contrast, it's a nice touch..On the head and foot tie outs, can you use a stick to lift them, making more head/foot room? Might be easier if there were two lifters like on the ray-way tarps, but probably not necessary you already have pretty good head room... damn, I gotta get myself a sewing machine now..
Simply awesome! I use the Duplex myself quit frankly from the design standpoint... I too used the Lightning 2FL and loved it but the lack of ventilation really frustrated me... too bad because it is a kick ass tent! Your next DIY project... the perfect sleeping pad and pillow! Keep up the great videos!
The perfect pad: hammock. Haha. Seriously though, I actually really like my sea to summit mats when I do go to the ground. I have an insulated one and an uninsulated one. I just use a cuben fiber suffsack with a fleece liner, flipped inside out and stuffed with clothes/down jacket. Works great.
Use the same for a pillow but still... there's gotta be a better solution... picked up the feathered friends down pillow... gonna give that a try... wish I could make my pillow at home weight less... need to invent a shrinking machine!
I've been looking for a quality tent with this same design. Definitely limited in the market. Would love to see this go to a full blown product. I strongly suggest turning this into a brand.
I can't really add anything new, all I can do is echo everyone else's comments. Terrific job! I want one! I've watched this video several times, hoping to catch one more idea. I really want to make this tent! You really should put a patent on it and produce it. I think you have a big market just from your fans here! I still don't see how you attached the doors to the roof, but after a few more times through and I should finally get it. Sure, I'd love to see those plans too, but wouldn't expect you to give them up! I wonder if you used the floor material in the pole-pockets, would that have brought the weight under the 32 oz mark? hmmm....maybe the next one.... Great job Man!

I like the single skin with netting design. Some great tips. I’m utilising a bike as the support. The material choice is very helpful.

Did exactly the same thing. Built it for my 6'3" frame. Same design except 1.1oz Silnylon. Love it.

Great job. I am considering a DIY tent and that's the same basic design I had in mind. You used a heavier floor fabric than I was planning, but still came in at 2 pounds. I might follow your lead if I get the guts to do this. Thanks for the inspiration.
Nice job on a great looking tent! I like the shock cord idea on the corners of the tub floor and may have to add that to mine. Keep up the good work.

I hiked 800+ miles on the AT this year and I'm going to do the whole thing starting next March. I'm absolutely going to make my own version of your tent which in my opinion is the best tent I've seen. Your must haves are exactly the same as mine, although I'm just 2" taller than you. Nice, I was planning something exactly like this tent but couldn't figure out how to connect the bug netting to the wall. This will come in handy. Sewing my quilt based off your other video now!

Please approach gear manufacturers and tell them this design and the materials address every concern UL hikers have and there would be a line to buy this. I can't justify paying $600 for a Duplex where the cuben material is not going to last a thru-hike. Just too many instances of it failing at stitch points and holes in the tent wall and mesh. Tarptent models that are good are too heavy...etc.
You've ticked all the boxes and I especially love the bathtub floor choice. No groundcloth! Yippee. Well done!

I agree, that's just about the perfect design. You did a fantastic job! The bright green thread on the the black makes for a nice contrast, it's a nice touch..On the head and foot tie outs, can you use a stick to lift them, making more head/foot room? Might be easier if there were two lifters like on the ray-way tarps, but probably not necessary you already have pretty good head room... damn, I gotta get myself a sewing machine now..
Simply awesome! I use the Duplex myself quit frankly from the design standpoint... I too used the Lightning 2FL and loved it but the lack of ventilation really frustrated me... too bad because it is a kick ass tent! Your next DIY project... the perfect sleeping pad and pillow! Keep up the great videos!
The perfect pad: hammock. Haha. Seriously though, I actually really like my sea to summit mats when I do go to the ground. I have an insulated one and an uninsulated one. I just use a cuben fiber suffsack with a fleece liner, flipped inside out and stuffed with clothes/down jacket. Works great.
Use the same for a pillow but still... there's gotta be a better solution... picked up the feathered friends down pillow... gonna give that a try... wish I could make my pillow at home weight less... need to invent a shrinking machine!

I've been looking for a quality tent with this same design. Definitely limited in the market. Would love to see this go to a full blown product. I strongly suggest turning this into a brand.

I can't really add anything new, all I can do is echo everyone else's comments. Terrific job! I want one! I've watched this video several times, hoping to catch one more idea. I really want to make this tent! You really should put a patent on it and produce it. I think you have a big market just from your fans here! I still don't see how you attached the doors to the roof, but after a few more times through and I should finally get it. Sure, I'd love to see those plans too, but wouldn't expect you to give them up! I wonder if you used the floor material in the pole-pockets, would that have brought the weight under the 32 oz mark? hmmm....maybe the next one.... Great job Man!

Fantastic, yes you answered everything I need fulfilled. I’m ready to pay you to make one. Can you make any roof venting up in the trekking pole/vestibule center top area? Inner nest zipper further up a d out for a bigger inner door? Great job. Better than a lot of products out there. Light strong and easy set up. Damn good.
