- Here are a couple of great trumpet licks from a Twilight Zone episode called - "A Passage for Trumpet" starring Jack Klugman and John Anderson. (Season 1, ep. 32) The trumpet soloist is the great Uan Rasey - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uan_Rasey
The composer was Lyn Murray. Here's a wonderful interview with Jack Klugman about working with Rod Serling with this episode and others - good stuff! • Jack Klugman discusses...

OMG... this is the very essence of that film noir episode... just the right amount of echo for a great atmospheric nostalgic touch. Thanx... from one trumpeter to another !
Thx! One of my fav episodes!
You definitely got your chops from the twilight zone.
Very clean playing 👍🎺
😄 Thanks man! (Person, being…?) 🥴
I love the first one you play from passage from a trumpet because it's supposed to be Gabriel in there talking to Jack Klugman and man I got to tell you what I hear that song it makes me cry for some reason that ballad from a trumpet
+Ron Nash Thanks man! That’s actually a quote from the episode - Joey tells Gabe - “I could make them cry...”
Fantastic playing!
+marcrgarcia Thank you!
Cooooool Dad, so cool. Loved every note.
+rlr50 Thx bro! Your kind words are much appreciated!
Nice song!
Indeed! Thx!
Nice. Joey Crown would be proud.
+stewie dark / invisible id Thanks man! 😎
Just discovered this RUclips post. One of those musical passages, like "Jack's" Dave Grusin piano in "The Fabulous Baker Boys", that if it went on for another 30 seconds, I'd be crying in my beer for reasons I couldn't explain. Sometimes we cry just because the furniture in our hearts is being rearranged, just a bit.
heebiejeepie Thanks Heebie - I will take that as a compliment! Thanks for discovering me - my mission is to invoke the soul and emotion! Only music has the potential to do that! Stay tuned - I will be posting several new videos that you are sure to like! Thanks again for your comment!
That's how my life has gone ; finding good stuff while I chase other good stuff. When the first solo drifted into Joey's world, even as a kid, it put me in the proper frame of mind for a "second chance" story., and I heard the trumpet projecting the kind of power some think only a saxophone can.
The trumpet has that kind of power - best wishes on your journey...BTW - love Dave Grusin - and "The Fabulous Baker Boys" soundtrack! Have that soundtrack and many of his other CDs! Stay positive and focused! The world is at your feet!
Beautiful....A wonderful tribute.
+algernon1119 Thank you!
Beautiful!
+Gary Raines Thank you!
Thanks so much great clips I am working on these myself right now for alto saxophone! Cheers!
+New Illyrian Thanks! Enjoy!
Nice job on the Trumpet
+Raymond Alvin Thanks!
Is there ANY way you could post your transcription of the above song/licks? I'm a bass player and I have more in common with Joey Crown than I care to post. I was searching for the sheet music when I came across your video.
My ear is not what I wish it was and it's in a MUCH higher register but I need "A Passage for Trumpet" in my life right about now.
I just subscribed to your channel hoping to direct message you. I'M FROM PITTSBURGH!!! My father is in the Marcels!

In my top favorites of TW
What specific trumpet did they both play ?
Hello Rick - quite by chance that I came across your link. I have been searching for ages for some sort of info on the music specific to this, one of all-time favourite episodes of the TZ; I know that Lyn Murray played or composed the so-called incidental music in the episode. I loved the solos that Klugman's character played. But I LOVED the piece that plays in the jukebox when Joey muses over someone who once did him a good turn. Do you know that piece?
+Favourites2027 Hey thx for stopping by! You know after I read your comment I went back and watched the episode again. First of all, you have much better hearing than me because that music is playing so softly! 😄 That tune def sounds familiar but it’s got me stumped. But you did prompt me to do some reading on Lyn Murray who I had never heard of (well I sure heard his music, especially being a fan of Alfred H. Presents for whom he also wrote incidental music for) Thanks for that. By your spelling of favourite, I’m guessing you’re from across the pond - just a guess! 😊 Thanks again for your input - I learn something new everyday! I’ll stay on the hunt for that tune!
@@rickdaller3693 Thanks for the reply Rick; well, not across the pond, but from Canada (though I went to school England). I have that particular episode on DVD - played the particular scene a few times - and it's beautiful. Nothing quite like the melancholy sound of a trumpet beautifully played (Armstrong, for example). I even tried Soundhorn, but no luck - though that was a few years ago. If you like melancholy jazz, give a listen to the theme from the Singing Detective or to the opening theme for Chinatown: ruclips.net/video/Z70axRwP74Q/видео.html
Does anyone know what these passages were from?
Very nice. I love that episode of the Twilight Zone. Gab could play too.
I can't remember in what movie it was, but I remember the line, "There are 2 great trumpet players. Gabriel, he's Number 1. Close to him is Louie Armstrong."
+jazzmaan707 Thank you! Where would us buglers be without Gabe and Louie! 😊
I think that was from “The Five Pennies,” the Red Nichols story, starring Danny Kaye, with Louis himself in the movie.
+Jon-Erik Kellso Thanks!
Amazing! You make me want to play. Is that some sort of chorus on your horn?
+Iliek Adaam After recording the video I ran the video (actually audio) through "Audacity" to add some reverb since my practice room is pretty well soundproofed.
It sounds amazing. I thought Gabriel was playing ! haha.
Thanks man! I'll try and live up to that ! :-)
Wonderfully sad!
+Martin Bebow Thank you! I think...😄
and that's why I love the trumpet because it can make you laugh and can make you cry..
@@ronnash4078 It was trumpet playing on the Twilight Zone episode with Jack Klugman that really got to me. I love to find some albums with just that kind of trumpet solo playing.
Very Miles esque licks.
well his work with Hermeto Pascoal . Like Little Church , or Selim .
