- Cataclysm and Acu are both very good starter extremes demons to go for, but provide some differences in gameplay, deco, and atmosphere.
Cataclysm is a 1.9 old impossible level that over time became easier and easier. It is hell themed, and inspired levels like Bloodbath. The gameplay isn’t very fun or special, but is pretty well decorated for it’s time.
Acu is a 2.1 modern extreme demon that has amazing gameplay and decoration. It is very fun to play, and is balanced exceptionally well. It is by far one of my favorite extreme demons, and I’m glad to have beaten it.

I used to play all the way back in middle school when cataclysm was considered the hardest if not THE hardest level in the game. The fact that it's considered a starter extreme demon, even after the level being so different in certain parts now makes me feel so old. I started getting back into GD recently cuz I got a bunch of videos recommended to me. My best on it right now is 49% but I've had practice diff runs where I go from 50-100 so I feel confident about fulfilling sort of a childhood dream of mine. To be honest, it definitely is a lot easier than I remember it being, but that also might have to do with the fact that I was a mobile player back then and now I play on PC on a really good setup. Really puts into perspective to me about how the skill ceiling of even the most average player like just gets higher and higher.
yeah it’s actually insane. another huge example is bloodlust. Like when that came out I thought it was near impossible and now it’s at top 100

i'm trying to do cataclysm as my first extreme demon. i have 33k attempts in and just got to the last ship recently. i hope i'll be done with this level till the end of the year. also, great video, you've earned a sub :))

I love seeing other perspectives on stuff like this. While Acu is an amazing level and I fully respect and appreciate the work that was put behind it, it was one of the worst experiences I have ever had in Geometry Dash while Cataclysm on the other hand didn't have a single bad moment in my own personal experience. Couldnt agree more with you, I started trying to go for cata as my first extreme but it was so painful to play I temporarily stopped playing it so i could go for acu, which im doing now and have 88 on. During my time playing acu it has become my favourite extreme if not my favourite level and is so fun to play

My opinion (as a person who's beaten Acu as his first but still hasn't touched Cataclysm past the wave):
I would recommend Acu as a first extreme demon to EVERYONE. It's a level that truly develops your general skills in Geometry Dash, like flow gameplay with timings here and there, keeping your nerves at the end, tough beginning yet it's all pretty balanced (with the drop being obviously easier but not by much). It's also very satisfying to pull off, the theme of the level is incredible for pretty much everyone (I personally love hell theme, but few people do it seems), the song is very nice again for pretty much everyone, just overall very fun.
Cataclysm, on the other hand, not so much. It has a lot of flaws for today's standards (and I understand it's a very old level, so this makes sense, but you too need to understand that objectively only the present matters at the moment). The gameplay is pretty bad, not so clear at times, not as consistent, unnecessary memory parts, little music sync, short and beginning-heavy. The decoration is truly atrocious. It's not really fun playing, so it's even less fun if you're not good enough to finish it easily. What I would recommend is, if you really wanna beat Cataclysm, play it once you've beaten a decent number of extremes and you're good enough not to struggle. Because playing a bad level and struggling sucks.
i feel that, I beat my first insane like a month a ago which was sharp minor and now have been working on cataclysm as my first extreme. I have 18k attempts and have gotten 0-40 and 50-100x2. It was very frustrating at the start feeling like I was making no progress and now the levels feeling a lot more fun
I just started acu yesterday as my first extreme and practicing through it I can confirm that it is very fun. I freaking hate cataclysm though, it’s only difficult from random chokepoints

Id say you’ll be fine, as long as your making good progress. But Phobos is a pretty weird level so not really much I can say there lol

i’m jumping from deadlocked to cataclysm and i can already do 65% to 100% and 18%-40% within 4 days
the reason i chose cataclysm over acu is beacause it reminds me of bloodbath and i was obsessed with it when i was younger but i can say cataclysm was not really enjoyable but i knew it was gonna make my ship and wave skills better
beat acu on mobile in 13k and barely got 10% on cata. mobile is very balanced
so acu would be a better beginner extreme for mobile?

No acu is way harder on mobile ,cataclysm after 40% is free for me on 60hz mobile

I was originally going to do Acu as my first extreme demon,but I thought of beating Cataclysm first since I'm more personally attached to the level(what I mean is that it,along with Bloodbath,got me into Extreme Demons in the first place). And then I realized that my hardest wasn't even an Extreme demon(it was Dash btw),and I thought beating an Extreme demon as a first demon would be funny lol.
Btw, my progress in Cataclysm was like a laughable run of 75-80% lol
i decided to jump from windy landscape to epsilon cause i wanted a list demon, but man do i kinda wish i started with acu, would of been so much less stressful

I would recommend 1929, Windy Landscape, Sharp Minor, 64, Pyromaniac, Night terrors, Future Funk II or Crazy II
any of these would be a good first imo

One has a stupidly hard wave section.

I started playing Cataclysm about 2 weeks ago as a small jump from Supersonic and I really regret starting it. Because 40-48 is so weird and bad (Misaligned straight fly along with multiple portals half way and the second half not being aligned with the first and the really hard blind timing at 47% which has killed me so many time when I was getting far) , there's tonnes of bugs (at least for 180hz) usually where the portals are spammed together, and the difficulty of the level is so unbalanced with 10-15 and 40-48 being way harder than the rest of the level. But because I learnt the end first and worked my way backwards I didn't realise soon enough that I was going hate doing runs from 0 but I'd spent over 10000 attempts on it at the time and had runs of 35 and 43-100 so I didn't wanted to drop it when I'd spent so much time and effort into it, I would highly recommend playing Acu instead as your first extreme as from the few practise runs I've done it's been so much more enjoyable along with it being more similar to other newer and harder extreme demons where your rapidly changing between different game modes making it a really good stepping stone to getting better and used to extremes as Cataclysm doesn't have this type of game play in it at all and it can be really frustrating to play.

I beat cataclysm recently and I'm now going for Acu. In my personal experience, Acu is harder as I am better at classic gameplay, having started playing the game back in 2014. The modern flow and timings of Acu are much more tough to me than the wave and ship gameplay of cataclysm, and the wave orb in the drop has me stuck rn. Being said, Acu has been fun, and I enjoyed cataclysm too, only dying once past 70%.
I just beat acu and I took me 8459 attempts. I died at 77% 17 times and it was a grueling experience, but I still love the level

Back when I was younger, I was like “I’m gonna be cataclysm for my first extreme demon” but when I actually got to that point of the game, I hated the first wave and acu looked easier to me. Either way, both beginnings SUCK.
from a mobile pov, a ton of cata's difficulty comes from the wave and ship parts. the first wave in particular is a struggle. i have not gotten past that first wave. but acu on the other hand, took me about 13k attempts (as a first extreme) so from my experiences, acu is far easier than cata

@@TheRandomGuysmini here is an update because I somehow got recommended back to this video, I installed something called whisky which allows me to run the windows version of gd, which allowed me to use Vsync. I literally beat acu within 1 hr once I turned it on. Now I am working on Dark Odyssey as my next extreme

I bear both, maybe because acu was my first extreme i think this but cata took me no time at all, acu took a few weeks, and cata took 2 days. I think its way easier than acu

Cataclysm es basura con gameplay horrible y desbalanceado.
Acu, en cambio, es mucho más disfrutable, fácil y consistente (Aunque a partir del 70% esta un poco feo xd). Este fue mi primer y único Extreme Demon.

In my opinion, over 144hz Cataclysm is easier, but on 60hz, Acu is way easier. Since cataclysm is skill based, has wave and ship parts that can't be easily done on 60hz, but higher frame rate is making the player forget the difficulty of gamemodes since they actually see what they do.
Is there a significant difference between 120 and 144hz? I feel like I'm almost at the level needed to beat Cataclysm but the second part of the first wave is reallyyy holding me back, so I'm curious if playing on 120hz is an impediment here.

I’ve heard bad things about red world, but maybe just try it out in practice mode to see if you want to beat it.

I am curently working on cataclysm. I died at 74%. I'm scared I wont be avle to reach this point again for long because of the verry hard dual straight fly that I fluked the 1st time but that I still srruggle on during practice.

The easiest exetreme is the lost existence IMO, but it isnt easy to grind for a long time as it is pretty boring.

@Electrx7 the deadlocked part's ship is really easy but tho ufo isn't as easy. Also there is a 0.5x speed or normal speed wave (I forgot) that's really annoying.

Yes, but not by a lot for me. They both focus on sync and I’m pretty good at synced flow gameplay so I see them around the same difficulty

Just beat cataclysm as my first extreme in 7400 attempts, jump from magma bound of all things, did not enjoy it AT ALL. Died at 90% as well ;(

just gonna throw in my opinion because i'm a victor of acu:
Believe it or not, I felt that Acu was absolutely miserable. The beginning HARD carries the level and everything else was so consistent 24-100 felt like a medium demon. It took me 30 thousand attempts to beat this level, and only for the last 400 was the predrop consistent.
For cata, it has the same issue: the beginning is the only hard part. I'd say cata feels more balanced than Acu for me because the hard part is way shorter and it's more forgiving
