I actually worked in a Chrysler / Jaguar dealership as a mechanic in Manchester New Hampshire for a couple of years and this only pertains to transmissions that are staying stuck down in first gear , and sometimes the symptoms with this is that you will get up to a certain speed and it feels like your wheels are going to jump out from underneath your vehicle...not slipping transmissions or any other symptoms of a bad transmission, only if they are staying down in first gear.Actually what is wrong with the transmission is that when a transmission starts leaking people just stop at the neighborhood Shell station or BP or whatever you have and buy transmission fluid and dump in their transmissions. They never take into the consideration the fact that there are special additives that are inside each one of these transmission fluids formulated for each one of these cars. In most cases I found , your transmission is not out, but that you need to do is a service on it including changing the pan filter and transmission fluids. One guys diagnosis on a previous comment was right . The governor shaft is sticking, but the reason why is the wrong transmission fluid inside of the transmission. I know transmission fluid is expensive , but you may have to flush this transmission fluid a second time to get it right. I Hope this has helped someone keep from replacing their transmission if it is sticking down in first gear only by simply doing a trans service on their transmission.
Bob Gregory, thanks for your post. I just picked up an 04 Lincoln LS V8(same platform as Jaguar S series I think) W/5R55s and 102K on the clock. Took seller at his word and forgot to mention the tranny won't shift out of 1st. I was worried I was going to have to replace the valve body and shift silonoids.
2005 chevy impala, mine won't shift out of first gear anymore but I can do reverse and neutral and park. It's odd. My gears were able to shift shortly before this.
Willie Fourie No I didn’t bother to fix it I got rid of it within a year which means I just needed a transmission but I didn’t wanna pay $5000 for a new transmission

Governor pressure switch and governor pressure solenoid. Located on passenger side of transmission with trans pan off. Easy fix. Takes about half an hour or less of actual work. Takes longer for pan to seal and addition of trans fluid.

You can't add transmission fluid to a dodge transmission but you already know that being a dodge mechanic
