It's a teachable moment.
I just sent a smoked top to a guy in California and it arrived UPS with a Giant split. He was a flying roof club situation. His sister never locked it down. Now, UPS decided to not put fragile stickers on the box with my top. I paid for insurance and they are trying to screw me now. I paid insurance they broke it and i eat it. Bull crap. Time to break heads
Dude I haven't done that with my C5 roof, but I've done it with other things: something distracts you from your usual process and causes you to miss a crucial step in your typical auto-pilot process. Worst feeling. Good luck man!

Dang... Same thing happened to me in my c7 that I had 2 years ago... I too was lucky no one got hurt... Expensive lesson.... $2K for carbon fiber top, hardware transfer and paint... Ugh... Unfortunately I had never heard of the flying roof club prior.... Not to say that would of made any difference. I had taken my top of so many times and all it takes is one mistake.. I think gm should put pressure sensors indicating the top is in place and a warning light and chime that goes off if the roof isn't latched... It's a real hazard and some safety measure should be put in place... There are warning lights if the door is ajar or the hatch isn't shut and neither one of these things pose nearly as much of a danger....

Wow,that's some scary stuff bro. There have been times i have almost forgotten to latch my top(convertible) 2004 vette,but i have remembered,i know it would not be as "shattering" as your experience but i do not want to find out what could happen. Happy New Years my friend...keep the videos coming!

Man i bought a 14 c7 stingray in April enjoyed every bit of it when I first got it. One summer day I got off work and took it off to enjoy the sun. Got home and it was really hot so put the top back on and forgot to latch it back on. Went back out to get dinner and got on the road next thing you know my top is up in the air. Luckily no one was behind me but embarrassing to pick it back up when everyone was watching. Lol major scratches on the carbon fiber top but lesson learned me

Wow! I'm sick. This just happened to me. Scratched up pretty bad. Glad no one was behind me. Lesson learned. They are very expensive.
🙋🏾♀️ new member here.....I could not believe it. All I can do is watch from rear view where it landed and was very grateful no car got hit. It can be replaced not life so no worries!

Drove a Corvette for 15 years, had the roof off many times. Never, ever forgot to bolt the roof down.
You're not the first and you won't be the last. Hang in there! I actually made a red strap with white letters that said "Secure Before Launch" and I would tie it to the steering wheel or tuck it under loose top as a reminder. Always looked cool at shows.

My grandma gave me her 1970 convertible Cadillac DeVille, and on the way home, the front lip of the top started flapping and then the entire top blew off the car. lol

Chris I got a problem with my daytime driving lamp, the socket with bulb is burning and melting through the housing, this the second time I replace the whole housing
I like the idea of latch sensors. I know Harlan Charles (Corvette product manager) personally, I will bring your idea to him.

I've had a C5 for years and never, ever came close to doing this. Haha.
Not gonna lie, I have almost forgot to latch mine but I always check now before I go anywhere lol

Hey, it's real life. I wouldn't be doing myself any favors by hiding it.
The warning sensor would need to detect when the roof is in place but not latched, otherwise that would be annoying if it just went off anytime it was unlatched including when it was actually off.
Yes that I why I pointed out it would need 2 sensors, front and rear. JEEP seems to have this figured out with the removable doors.
My Corvette Life ok thought that is what you meant when you pointed out the rear sensor, but I wasn't sure. Great idea. What did your wife say when it flew off LOL?

Did this just this past Sunday. No where near this amount of damage. Acrylic didnt break and only cracked a corner. Was able to put it right back in the car. Going to replace the acrylic.
Hey, maybe I can get parts from you...? For some reason my rear latch all of a sudden isn't working... I have to look at it, but, when I put my top in, the front latches and the rear does nothing...so let me know ...;-) Oh, I'm not driving mine with the top in, since that rear latch isn't working...;-) I have a 2013 Grand Sport

I did this with my fiberglass roof. Great excuse to get the glass roof. Turning lemons into lemonade because I am a moron.
I drove a 2017 Stingray convertible for a week. It does have a censer that lets you know if the top is not properly secure.

I saw a video about your situation, with an ounce of prevention. When you are starting to put your top on, move the sun visors down. Whenever you start to drive, the visors will be in your line of vision. So then you latch the top, raise the visors and drive away a happy camper.
I need your Corvette club. I have been looking EVERYWHERE for an acrylic roof, and cannot find one for much less than $1000. I have the color-matched roof on my 2004, but it has seen its fair share of drops and scratches, and I would rather have the acrylic for when I am driving with the top on.
Check Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp. They are out there.
LMAO! Almost lost mine, but mine is convertible so I grabbed it before the wind tore it off. I agree, there should be an electronic sensor put in. Hey, at least no other car was damaged or person got hurt.

Yea. About 50 people have reached out to me in the past 2 days since I uploaded this saying it has happened to them to.
Not as bad but yesterday I locked my keys in my convertible C4. $80 & 1/2 later a locksmith got the car open. The guy was afraid of the car lol

Well for me I'm in my own little corner of the flying roof club,only my glass in my targa went flying off,the frame was latched in.
And guess what chevy doesnt make new tops and I cant find one or anyone to fix mine.
Check Corvette Forum. I know there is a place that makes the “glass”.
You should see what happens when you don't latch down a convertible roof!

No, I said I’m surprised they don’t have a warning light, because it has happened so much. I wasn’t blaming it on not having a warning light. I took responsibility. Literally about 50 people have told me it has happened to them also within my circles on forums and my local group.

C3 Corvette didn't have a Targa top.T-tops 2 pieces. Have watched a few of your vidos and been quite critical. Be more acurate and guys like will no longer your vidoes a ything buy "amusement" at best.

Do you know what else speaking of General motors they should be ashamed of themselves there’s no reason why they could not have installed a spring action lock which means the roof will not go all the way on without you releasing handle put in place and let the Honda go that way it wouldn’t sit on there as though it was installed all the way
