- Formula 1 is the first racing game in Sony's Formula One series. Unlike later games in the series, this game's cover has no specific driver on it (except for the North American version which features an image of Michael Schumacher driving for the Benetton team during the latter portion of the 1991 Formula One season).
Published by Psygnosis, Formula 1 is based on the 1995 Formula One season, although it was released in 1996. It is distinct from its sequels because it was made after the end of the season, meaning that it features driver substitutes. The game also allows two-players to compete against each other either head-to-head or with other computer cars via the 'Link-Cable'. Both players may then compete over a 17-race Championship season, or in a single race of the players choice.
Still our favourite F1 Game of all time! The sound of Murray Walkers voice never fails to excite, miss that commentary soooo much.
BEST commentaries on a sportvideogame ever
This was the first ever Playstation game I played. I bought a PS1 second hand off someone back in the day and this game came with it, I remember being so impressed there was actually commentary on the game 😂 I then went on to get some of the best games ever in Broken Sword, Worms, Destruction Derby and Tekken 2 lol
I remember that period it was a great time to be a gamer.

your memory is not that far off, those games look much better on a crt, when you watch them on a lcd it all falls apart. what you see in this video is not what you where looking at 20 years ago, is a different image.
3d in the 90' was rough but not as bad as we think nowdays.

I remember playing this in my aunts's house with her boyfriend (now husband). He had two tv's to play it on for us to play 2 player. Good memories.

As others have said, this was the game that introduced me to the PS. I got a console, this game, and NFL Gameday '96.
What a classic, Murray too, I had great fun with this as a teenager when F1 was at its peak.
This game brings me great memories, thanks for uploading that for us. This game was released two years after Ayrton Senna's death. The soundtrack is awesome

The old CRT TVs would have been a lot more forgiving to the visual jaggies, in comparison to the high-definition device you're no doubt watching this video on.
This was the closest we got to an Indy 500 game on a non-Sega platform...
Great nostalgia trip. The amount of contact you could have without consequence is hilarious, especially because Murray would point out all of it on commentary, but that just made it all the more fun for me as a clumsy 10-year-old 😂
David Howell there was a mode with damage but yeah it was hilarious to just barge your way through with Murray screaming

Oh wow guys! Did you see the Foster's sponsor on the advertising boards? if that EVER appeared in modern gaming it'd be registered 18, still that's how laid back it was back then, at least they did more accuracy with this one, Formula One and Formula 1 97 will always be my favourites :)

Such a ruthlessly hard game if you played it with all the realism settings on but oh my god, did this showcase the Playstation's capability back in 1996.
I rewrote the record books on this game and with two world championships no one could beat me I had all the tracks perfectly memorized it was sick I was so good I could sit at the start and wait for the cars to start their second lap and still win. The second version F1 championship was even better

I can't believe my eyes I was 15 y/o when I used to play it new and thought how realistic it was.
it was the sound that brought realism into the 32bit era , if you see or better hear the sound is almost as in a modern game

Great game, shame the aspect ratio is wrong in the video- the game is a 4:3 game, not widescreen. Just look at the Psygnosis logo, that owl's head should be round!

He didn't move to Sauber until 1998. Although the game is 1996, the cars are 1995, hence Jean and Gerhard hadn't moved to Benetton yet. The game even gives the option of Mansell at McLaren.

I loved the handling in this game it didn't seem overly touchy but you still need to finese it. I hate racing games where the car is all over the place

go,go go.F1 games are now going downhill so to speak,this game was one of my first to play on console.I have now been playing games on a sony console ps1,2,3,4 for 23 years and will contininue on to ps5.the let down of f1 of today is no commentary in game,it made the game so alive but now just engine noises,whoopee
One of first where you could link two ps1's get two tvs and play all night against a mate. Back in 90's its how we rolled lol.
Yeah those were the good old days, split screen 2-4 players and back to back 2 player with two TVs and the system link cable.
