    That Oakland team of the late 80's / early 90's sure was intimidating. Rickey leading off, these two lumbering hulks, plus other guys like Hendu, Lansford and Steinbach. Opposing pitchers must have had serious anxiety facing that lineup! The swag, forearm bash celebrations etc. just added to their dominant image. Amazing they didn't win more.

    • @dsfddsgh
      @dsfddsgh 7 лет назад +6

      Part of the reason they didn't win more then one WS was that they didn't have players that played with heart. They needed players like a Lou Piinella or Paul O' Neill who weren't flashy but were winners. The A's almost had to many superstars for their own good.

    Because of the chase by McGwire and Sosa's in 98, ppl seem to forget that alot of other guys had awesome seasons in 98 as well. Canseco hit 46 with toronto. Bonds had close to 40 and almost did 30/30 again, griffey had what 56, Bagwell, albert belle had what 48 or so... and others all had great years too. 1998 was a fun season to watch overall, not just the chase. 1998 was everything that 1994 was shaping to be before the strike.

I had almost forgotten about Griffey’s (without PEDs) crazy season that year. He was an absolute beauty with what is probably the best swing in baseball all-time. No other player in the history of the game compares to mid-90s KG jr. ⚾️💪🏼

      Sorry, but great hitters combine power with average, or with high average alone. McGwire's .263 BA and Canseco's .266 hardly make them great hitters. Great "power" hitters? I will give you that, for that is pretty much all they did. Well, Canseco could hit doubles a bit. McGwire, on the other hand hit less than half as many doubles as HR. 1 dimensional is what McGwire was.

    • @jeffw1267
      @jeffw1267 5 лет назад +3

      +kyokogodai Maybe so, but McGwire averaged over two bases per hit for his entire career. Even Ted Williams couldn't do that. Babe Ruth just made it (though he hit 76 points higher than McGwire). Ted Williams - 1.84 bases per hit. Babe Ruth - 2.02 bases per hit. Mark McGwire - 2.24 bases per hit. McGwire didn't hit a lot of doubles because he was hitting home runs instead.

But the game sure did prosper at the time because of it.

    These guys were like gods to me when I was a child. It’s insane though if you watch the first couple mins when they were born on Oakland McGwire was like a normal sized dude. Than one season dude just becomes a tank. At one point they both got to damn big, but man I wish these guys in their prime were in mlb the show

      Christopher Martinez THE worst thing about it was when McGwire broke Roger’s record. The Maris family came out to the game to be there in a brave show of class; big Mc went over for hugs with them; their tears flowed; and, in going along with the charade, most egregiously, he disgraced EVERYBODY.

    “Why does Will Clark play first base? Because he can’t run. If he could run, he’d be in the outfield. The best athletes are in the outfield." - Jose Canseco 7/1990. Baseball needs more personalities who are allowed to speak their mind.

      Remember when Canseco was running towards the wall to TRY and catch a deep fly, the ball bounced off his head and over the wall for a HR. He was awful defensively but no one had his bat speed back then. Although Gary Sheffield's bat speed was off the chain also.

    No matter what people say about Jose Canseco taking steroids and ratting everyone out, he was still a great baseball player. Ok, yes steroids does give you extra power but, it doesn't make you see the ball any better. I don't think he needed steroids cause he was already a big guy. Just him lifting weights would've been enough but, he ruined his career and reputation and many other players reputations.

    2:50 People don't talk that other aspect of Canseco's game very much...dude was a GREAT baserunner, just as good as his famous power. He could've gone stealing 30-40 bases a season every year if he so desired.

  • @zenrr1
    @zenrr1 6 лет назад

    What's interest about both of them is that their swings are all upper body strength. Their lower bodies are relatively still. This allowed them to catch up to fast balls easier because their swings were brief and uncomplicated requiring less precise timing; they could react quicker. But it also means you need more upper body strength in order to drive the ball hard. A smaller hitter needs their lower body to generate power.

    When baseball was exciting, juice or not. I love how the pichers have that look of non belief when they see their ball crushed or how the announcers don't even know what do say but "oh my" or oh "goodness" never seen balls get up out of there faster than when the 2 guys were playing.
