- I do love some easy roadside rockhounding, and it doesn't get much easier than this!
These UV lights I have really are opening up a whole new world of collecting to me, this is a neat location, but it's unlikely that I would be returning to this location if I didn't have the midwave light to see how colorful this material is.
The midwave 310nm UV light shown here is from Stimac Engineering - www.perkyboxes...

Photos look amazing! Crazy what the UV does exposing mystery colors. Fun outing and I enjoy the banter lol
Thank you very much!
Jared, I laughed so hard at the look Sarah gave you when you said the bird was the word. My wife and I have been married 32 years and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten that same look from my wife. It’s as if they are saying I can’t believe I married such an idiot, but would love. I enjoyed the video as I do all of them.
They're just surprised you said it, because everybody knows the bird is the word.
@@DonariaRegia LOL that’s a great point.
I wish i could get that look, lucky look to have...
I think that look is more of a "I can't believe I got so lucky! Some women never get to experience such greatness". :D
@@CurrentlyRockhounding I’m going to use that on my wife the next time I get the look.
I lived up on Bissel Mt from 2015-2018 caretaking property . I miss that part of the state. Thanks for the video!
It's a lovely area.
Props to Sarah not laughing at your Bird is the word reference :)
Ha!
Those natural faces are so clear. I like seeing the growth chevron-esk patterns the uv really helped with that.
I know this area, had no idea this was there, just have drove right by that cut with no clue that was there. Thanks for the new spot on my list. You have been to a lot of other areas I go to. I love Steven's County, lived here a large portion of my life and have no plans on leaving.
Absolutely beautiful colors. " Bird id the word"... 🐦 lol!!!
:D
Now I’m ready to get out there looking for some great rocks!
I'm getting hints of spring.
Road cuts are EPIC especially when fresh! When I was a greenhorn rockhound a good roadcut got me addicted to the hobby! It was filled with huge chunks of chalco pyrite with tourmaline it was such a blast!!
Wow..nice big piece and yes u should carry it back Sir!!!❤😂🎉
Wow? I would go nuts at night up there with a uv light! Thats an awesome road cut and thats a nice sized vein of calcite! It literally is like a little calcite waterfall! And all those crystals just laying on the ground, everywhere! I like calcite because, much like quartz, it takes on so many different looks, but its all calcite! And under uv, calcite really glows! So pretty with all the different colors! That was an awesome spot! Thank you and Sara for this great video! ❤
That looks like a fun spot. Incredible colors under the UV too 😯
It is very interesting to see everything in your part of the world.😃
Awesome spot! Love seeing the UV reactions👍👍
hey i think i hitchhiked through there when i was running away from my canadian hobo ex! people were really nice and helpful. i wish i had gotten to explore the geology. such pretty mountains.
In support!
Thank you so much! :)
Fantastic specimens and another great video guys. 💥
Very nice specimens!! Love those colors! Thank You for sharing!
Love your adventurers Homies!
Bird is not always the word🤣😛
Thank you!
Another fun roadside trip and you got a bucket and a bit to take home. The UV is always a treat. See y'a next time.😊
Really beautiful. Thank you.
I'm gonna need to go back there again. 👊
It's worth stopping at for sure.
Thanks really cool
Nice calcite!
Thank you.
Thank you.
Ooooh I know EXACTLY where this is! Evans is the best place to get swimmers itch 😂
You got me on the "take it home and clean it with acid" comment. Lol I was incredulous, Jared you know better. Lol😂
:D
That was pretty cool! Liked the colors that come out with the uv light. Some of those crystals are pretty in regular light also. Thanks for sharing these.😊
Such beautiful photos! The colors are amazing. Thanks.
Dang man so cool
10:30 I was just recommended one of your older videos from eight months ago, subject about using Drywall texture gun.
Nice.
Hmmm... I think the universe is saying, Hey Dustin CALCITE! This reminds me I need to check out what I found last week with the UV light. I got a tip from an extremely reliable source yesterday on red dogtooth calcite crystals! It's a road cut location. I'm kind of on the fence if I want to video it. It's exciting but I can't really share the exact location because if I did I'm sure it wouldn't be there long. Anyway... 1000% recommend the St. Genevieve natural history museum. I got kind of a spur of the moment tour yesterday from the museum director and see things that weren't on display. I actually got to pet a dinosaur yesterday! I'm not even kidding! We got to hold a specimen of fossil dinosaur SKIN! Ok done bragging lol. Hope you and the family are well Jared.
I do love some dogtooth calcite formations.
I hope you make a video there, I would love to see your finds!
@@CurrentlyRockhounding thank you so much for the validation 😆 if it’s half as cool as I was told it should be really impressive. Whatever if people get upset that I won’t share the exact location whatever watch another video lol
A giant crowbar ? Dynamite 😂.
When I was a kid, the local museum had a booth specifically for fluorescent minerals. You would step in, close the curtains, and a uv light would illuminate the display cabinet.
Do you have, or are you planning to make a UV display for your collection?
I would love to put together a UV display case in the house, but the big display lights are expensive still.
I live like 15min away from this spot and never knew it was there.
You should pop in and check it out.
Sarah did not get the reference to "Surfin' Bird"
Really interesting. I am wondering if that calcite would display what is known as thermoluminessence. This is a material's property of emitting light when heated. For some crystals this occurs at high temperatures, say 400c.
I have heard that some calcite from near mexico has this property due to manganese impurities, but luminesses in visible light at room temp. To see it, you chill the crystal well below the threshold temp and then radiate with high energy x-rays or electron beam to charge it up. Aftward, it will begin to glow as it warms up. I would love to try it on the calcite from that road cut. May have to swing by it sometime.
I would love to see that happen but I don't think I know anyone that can heat things like that.
Any medical physicist can do it with a medical linac. I don't know how long an exposure it would require... but I have used ours for doing some artwork that took about 30 minutes of electron beam. That should be more than enough.
My someday wish list!🧐
That’s some wild purples
BTW which border were you close to?
We have a kettle valley RR / cycling trail in the kootenays near the US border
The US side of the border. There is a link to the location listing on the website in the description box of the video.
do you happen to have to cords for this? my kiddo would die for a UV light hound!
It's listed on my website
does sarah get the bird joke?
Vikings used it to navigate the fog.
Do you have a website that I might be able to purchase a bunch of this calcite from you?
I do not sell rocks, but also you cannot sell rocks collected from locations that are public without a mineral claim on them.
What about short or long wave Uv?
They produce a very mild reaction.
Where is the road cut?
Please see the description box of the video.
