    Watch the scene in 4K if your device supports it as the picture will be noticeably sharper due to the higher bitrate (The blacks still get crushed a bit due to RUclips's compression).
    For those that want to view the scene with 5.1 audio (as RUclips no longer supports native 5.1 playback), download yt-dlp ( github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp ), download this video and then you can play back the file locally with 5.1 audio.

      It's not that Jessica is ruthless, she just knows that the guards would be powerless to stop the Reverend Mother, who was gonna do what she came there to do. Preventing the guards from attempting to stop the Reverend Mother would've probably saved their lives. Jessica was absolutely terrified before Paul even stepped into the room, and was in anguish from knowing what her son was going through, and that there was an enormous chance that he was going to die at any moment. She even had the Dr give him a quick checkup before going in, just to make sure he was strong enough to potentially survive what he was about to go through. How is that ruthless? You might feel like it burns but nothing is happening but the fear creeping in your head making your mind run with fantasies like wildfire. I guess it’s like when you eat a really hot sauce and your mind in fear thinks it’s burning your mouth so you down cold water but this time you feel the burning and resist, except this is affecting his hand but it’s the same idea that just cause it feels one way, nothing is happening. However , when the time comes for them to see you are stronger based off mental toughness and perseverance, they judge again. When you make it through in a different way they did or overcome , it is strange to them. They will question it. If you’re reading this, keep going down your own path . Don’t break , past generations are often broken but disguise it. Leaders lead, they don’t , we don’t, follow.

      I haven't read the book all the way through but from what I understand this is some kind of cultural ritual where they test you with pain (placing your hand in the box causes extreme pain to your hand gradually building to an intense level) to see if you'll freak out and take your hand out of the box even with full knowledge that if you do so, you'll be stabbed in the neck with poison and die. It's a test to filter out the weak minded.

    spoilers
    What few people pick up on in the books is the foreshadowing.
    The reverend mother says that an animal caught in a trap will naw off its own leg to escape.
    But in the books, she goes on to say, "but a human, will wait, enduring the pain in order to kill the trapper and protect the tribe from a deadly threat.
    Later Paul will kill the reverend mother, because he views her as a deadly threat to all of humanity. She taught him. But did she teach him that knowing she could die? Was she even then molding her answer to the "the place they dare not to look"?

      @skittles536 11 месяцев назад

      I’m not sure if this is the explanation you wanted but I’ve only seen the movie so I’m gonna guess it’s just like Jedi mind tricks where you can just make someone do something using some kind of unexplained magic. It’s probably explained more in the book, which I might read sometime since the movie was really good.

      The most important thing the book explains about it is that it is not magic. TLDR: it's psychological manipulation.
      Largely the point of the Dune books is to explore how far the human mind and body can evolve. The mentats are an exploration of the limits of human logic, the Fremen in part are pushing faith to its utmost, the Bene Gesserit explore the limits of the physical body and the conscious mind. Hence "The Voice" is simply the human voice pushed to the furthest extent conceivable. Just like the Mentats, Guild Navigators, and Bene Gesserit push themselves in various fields.
      Bene Gesserit training focuses on total, perfect muscle control. This is the basis for their Weirding Way, the most supreme and lethal of all combat techniques. They also focus on total mastery over their minds in terms of pain tolerance, physical endurance, exertion, reasoning and analysis ability, historical and cultural knowledge, etc etc.
      All together this gives a Bene Gesserit the observational abilities to psychologically read and profile any subject. This lets them know what words, tone, timing, body language, vocal imitation, etc etc will be most effective for a given goal with the subject. They then combine this knowledge with total control over their facial expressions, vocal chords, and body to not simply _command_ or order people, but to _manipulate_ them. Often the subject thinks it was their own idea to do something as the Bene Gesserit never explicitly told them exactly what she wanted from them. This is likely minorly used on people like the Emperor. But note, it is a secret ability, and not used frivolously. If it were to be understood it would be less effective, and could be fought against.
      A good example that shows how the movie simplifies (because it needs to for brevity) is that in the book Jessica doesn't shout so hard at her Harkonnen captors that they submit, no instead she _seduces_ them, plants the idea that they should loosen her restraints for their own benefit, and then she manipulates them into fighting and killing each other over her. THAT is The Voice.

      It's a form of speech that is taught to Bene Gesserit that mentally shackles people's minds using subtle subsonic shifts in vocals. It that takes decades for most to master. Hard to explain and it's been a long time since i read the book.
