What If I Can’t Afford A Lawyer?
The Sixth Amendment to the Constitution gives criminal defendants the right to counsel for all offenses where jail time is a possible consequence. If the court determines you truly cannot afford an attorney, the court will appoint the local public defender or other counsel to represent you for free. The right to counsel exists at all “critical stages” of the proceedings. “Critical stages” include (but are not limited to) lineups, preliminary hearings, pretrial motions, jury selection and of course trial.

How would you respond to this: most defendants don't retain counsel and most stay public. Therefore, public defender's could have closer relationships with prosecutor than private attorneys since they are in court more than them. These relationshipa could be of benefit when it comes time to plea negotiations.
