You know your ego's in check when you spend half of your 10 minutes talking about how great another actor is.
New Message Loved that
I couldn’t agree with you more. And Mark Rylance is simply brilliant, especially on stage👍
My respect for Ethan Hawke skyrocketed after this interview. What an intellectual. Super kind and well spoken. Humble enough to share some great lessons.
Patrick Monteith Same!
I love when an actor really cares about his work. His excitement and pride for the movie makes me excited as well!
moonwalkingthroughlife, couldn't agree more.
moonwalkingthroughlife I had no idea he was like this.v
He actually treats acting like an art
I know actors are charming, but Ethan is relatable, like he could be a friend you can chat and have beer with
moonwalkingthroughlife I like the movie Alive . It's based on true story
I have a newfound respect for Ethan now. He isn't just a Hollywood gasbag, there is intelligence and real thought there.
menotu000 newfound? 😉
A word of discontent.
@JR Thomas he said in an interview that he doesn´t want to be part of those "mega productions".
He loves doing Indie and low budget movies
JR Thomas I hope he doesn’t sell out like that
you should check him out on theoffcamerashow
What a stellar guest to have. I really appreciate his humility and understanding of people and life.
Before Sunrise changed my life when I first saw it. Ethan has always picked such interesting films.
Wyatt King Me too. I love to watch him: his role as Chet Baker in "Born to be Blue" is awe-inspiring.
Well he wrote the Before trilogy lol
Changed my life aswell
Wow. Ethan owned it. Such a interesting guy. I never knew..
I honestly didn't realize how interesting Ethan Hawke is and how well he tells stories. Great interview.
And in just a few seconds he sums up what current cinema is lacking.
Well... his new movie seems to offer it.
'Current cinema' is wayyy too broad. Massive Studio Box Office chasers maybe
There are are a lot of incredible films being made today. Spoken like someone who has only ever seen Marvel movies.
@@thyop89 Yes, and they are done on a shoestring, are hardly promoted and usually just disappear. We had one lucky Oscar season where a bunch of interesting movies came through and currently we are spoiled with Barbie (which as a movie is not yet a franchise) and Oppenheimer. But if you look at the past two years, you will have to admit that there were more impactful well-budgeted and successful non-franchise movies (or at least adaptions at the beginning of that journey) than we had five years ago.
Of you were born 89 you are also too young to know what cinema was before it was taken down by the franchise-only diet. In that case you should do some research before blabbering nonsense, as never in your life you were able to experience what going to the cinema was like.
I have such admiration for Ethan Hawke. He has found a way to keep a young man's energy and aura. I mean, he's 47, but he comes accross as a vibrant twenty something.
He's also such a real person, something that is very rare in the entertainment business. When he speaks, you pay attention, because you know wisdom and truth are about to come. Much respect.
I hope he and Richard Linklater make a new 'Before...' movie btw. Such a beautiful trilogy.
i so agree with you, considering they made the 3 movies before about 9 years apart each, the last one came out in 2013, we are in 2018, so it takes about 2 to 3 years to make a movie... meaning they can start writing it right now ! ;-)
Before....Sunrise, Sunset, and Midnight.
But.....what other daily solar event could they do? Oooh....how about Before Eclipse? It can take place in one day....the day last year when we had the total solar eclipse across the US. Whatever they call it...I'd love a new Before movie. Excellent series of films!
also, they could start a new series in the series: like before breakfast, before lunch, before dinner, before tea... ;-)
They could just do an 'After...' film/trilogy, instead.
But honestly, sometimes you just need to leave well-enough alone.
Well I just hope Ethan Hawke & Linklater reunite again on anything, magic happens when they work together.
Ethan Hawke is my favorite actor..he is so talented and amazing person but yet very underrated
A lot of people say he’s a real dick apparently.
I think it’s because he does a lot of independent movies and stays away from blockbusters.
Rdeez
A lot of people haven't replied as such, so far. Just you. Solo. Individual. Primary. Singular.
But... but... That vampire movie... That one with Selena Gomez was like the worst movie of that year lol. I met her! She said it was shit and she was the star lol.
Sorry I disagree... I think he's not very good. He's not trash but nothing special either...
true
Hawk is always a good conversationalist, really interesting to listen to.
Ethan Hawke is known for his reading. He has great books all over the place, keeps an ebook too, but talks about when you put your total concentration into that author, the energy of a superb book stays with you, incorporates its ideas and philosophy into you forever. You may not remember a movie ten minutes after seeing. But a book you have crawled into that writer’s mind. Just me and the author. Reading is thrilling. Folks who read sound brilliant and empathetic because they ARE.
Hello there. Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far ?
Great actor , wonderful person.
The Sunrise trilogy changed my life.... ...moving and intelligent
How?
I never Ethan Hawk was such an interesting person!! I enjoyed his movie, but listening to him speak about his work is just so moving!! Can't wait for the new movie!
Hello there. Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far ?
Before Sunrise seemed like just a light, romantic, 90's drama at the time. Today it's aged like a masterpiece.
god this was so deep and i didnt know i need this interview until i watched it
Hello there. Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far ?
did anyone else think that his humble surprise at being applauded was adorable?
Hello there. Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far ?
@@ethanhawke8369Hi bro you’re awesome actor 😎. First Reformed was too good.
Horrible cut at 05:09 . I really wanted to hear the whole interview, there's little more interesting than someone dedicated talking about his passion.
He is on promo tour and part of the deal is that they talk about the movie. This is something I like about podcast formats - if it gets interesting, they can add a few minutes and plug the movie later.
This is why it's killing me CBS won't stick to the one-guest-per-episode thing they were doing a few weeks ago. It worked like a dream.
it's not the RUclips editor. I'm pretty sure that beyond cutting out the walking-intro, they just leave the interview as show on TV.
Yes..! and they could easily upload the full version to youtube, but didn't do it. I wonder why? laziness or maybe something Ethan talked about, which can't be broadcasted?
Wow, why would they do that? Wasted.
Wow that was moving.
yeah.. I just got goosebumps all over. Ethan Hawke.. wow.. That is a thinking person.. Love it
Im going to see it again
Sry my girlfriend is Romanian and that somehow makes me adjust my vocabulary to her level of understanding. I will watch it again and now I have to dive deep into Ethan Hawke´s Thespian legacy
I like Ethan Hawke..he's a good actor and is very articulate and insightful...we need more actors like him that are intelligent and articulate instead of the ones that are air headed and dense
Indeed, it was. That guy is a class act and genuine.
His work in Before trilogy is just beautiful.
Intelligence mixed with enthusiasm is entertaining.
I was 11 when Dead Poets Society was released. It remains one of the most inspiring and emotionally moving films of my life, even now at 40 years old. Thoreau runs through my veins because of that film.
I had the good fortune to meet Robin during my third tour in Afghanistan. He was so kind. I wonder how much of Ethan's kindness is thanks to Robin's smiling face.
I love that Ethan appears to have not a negative thing to say about anyone. I love how humble and complimentary he is. I've loved his work my whole life, and it's nice to see he's a pretty amazing dude.
This video is a hugely welcome respite from the unending stream of vitriol and division that has become the standard. Just be excellent to each other.
read Roger Ebert's review of it lol
Ethan has always been one of my favorites. Here he looks like Mark Mcgrath but without all that scary face lifts and injections.
I love I love I love Ethan Hawke! He is a brilliant actor and story teller. He always seems so enamored with knowledge of books, movies & people, the masters of their craft and is always so very eager to share it with us. I could listen to him for hours! And I have...and pray I get to meet up again with Jesse Wallace at least once more!
Intelligent, passionate and beautiful man.
Wow that was awesome. I love him so much. To many good movies. Incredible actor. My favorite line of his career: "you, me and 5 bucks."
He's spot on. How many times have we walked out of a theatre and felt nothing, just thinking about what to get to eat instead? I love movies and I try to watch as many as possible, but it's only one or perhaps two movies every year that really leaves a mark. The last one was Call Me By Your Name and I hope that we'll see more of those movies in the future instead of the bland (yet popular) movies that we've seen a hundred times before.
Hello there. Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far ?
That clip was more interesting than most other clips featured in any latenight show.
just rewatched dead poet's today. maybe i should be watching this clip standing on my desk.
47 and2 Let out w barbaric Yawp while you're up there 😀👍
8:27 So true.
A good movie is when the movie is over, tv/screen is off and you still staring speechless .. :)
What a great guest - who knew - well, now I do.
"Can't we just keep politics out of the sermon?" I don't think that's possible since the two are so closely related.
Ethan's work here is very subtle, like a lot of his roles in cult movies (Gattaca, Daybreakers, Predestination, Valerian). I'll check this film out once it hits digital.
19thHour Lord of war
19thHour
Thank you for the recommendation. I've never seen Predestination.
Boyhood, Before Sunrise Trilogy

Training Day..
A24 is on a roll right now
He`s become the new Captain.
Gattaca
such a good film...
His thoughtfulness has been a source of inspiration for years. I don't know this man personally, but I want to.
Predestination is one of my favourite movies of all time. If any of you havent seen it check it out. Ethan Hawke is incredible in it
I don't know if you know, but that movie is based on a short story by Robert Heinlein, called "All You Zombies". Its very weird, and very Robert Heinlein.
Thanks for the tip!
Jay Rock Jinx he was his own Grampa
ablurt_55 masterpiece. That one rang a bell
I've been meaning to watch Predestination, it looks damn good.. one of these days.. :)
I'm really excited for his new film!! I heard it's gonna leave you shook for days.
Really?
It's dark, but powerful
That was a great story and I love the cute expression of pride in himself at having been able to pull off his performance at The Globe ^-^ Good job, Ethan! :D
I knew I liked this guy but this interview was a perfect example of how some Hollywood actors still have humility and intellect
It is decided: Ethan Hawke is my favorite actor!
"Now I am alone" isn't the first line of "To be or not to be." It is the first line of "O, what a rogue and peasant slave am I!" earlier in the play.
Michael Byrne I was wondering this myself. Wasn't sure if I was crazy or not.
Knowledge is of no value unless you put it into practice.
Sheila Dey Bitch shut the Fuck up.
Been a while since I saw a person in front of camera talking deep without appearing pompous.
Gotta love Ethan Hawke and can't wait for the movie
I can listen to him all day... so deep, inspiring, and talented.
Hello there. Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far ?
I hope he gets an oscar soon he was amazing in Boyhood and he's such a fantastic actor and writer
...yes Ethan! He is unequivocally, the most, underrated *INSPIRATIONAL/REAL* actor. This man, reminds us that there's still passion in the arts and no matter what, things can always be learned to shape your craft. I mean honestly, he's so talented and has brought a huge piece of joy to my life with his work. Amazing interview. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Hello there. Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far ?
I see that he, himself, is now a master as well. He is full of wisdom.
7:53 is where I got hooked to finally change my major to film and chase what I’m really passionate about, thank you Ethan and Stephen for having this conversation
Ethan Hawke is amazing. What a career he's having. He may not pick the roles that bring him the most fame of dollars, but the roles he plays resonate long after you've seen them. His 'Before' trilogy is one of my favorites.
Hawke is amazing. That was wonderful.
Hello there. Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far ?
Legend! 💪🏼🔥
What a great and motivating anecdote! I love Ethan! 🙏🏻
He was great in "Training day"☺
Hello there. Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far ?
I could listen to this man talk forever
Hello there. Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far ?
What an amazing interview.!!! Very Moving.. You are a Master Ethan, as far as when I first found you as one of my favorite 10, Training Day, A long time ago, along with another Master, Denzel.. Keep doing your work, it means more than you know to people everywhere, especially America, you cause a vibration of "Hope", "Kindness with purposeful understanding which teaches compassion along with knowledge.... Please Keep your energy and zealous commitment.. You are famous to me and human, never feel humiliated.. Ever!!! The best interview ever!!!
Such a joy to listen to an intelligent and edifying person!!! I'm watching that movie for sure!
“A good movie articulates a question”
So true, that’s what art is about
This is one of the best moments this show has ever seen. Mr. Hawke is so passionate, really moving.
Ethan Hawke is a thoughtful, articulate individual..... like very few in the celebrity business. He is a true artist.
Yes, I has very strong vibrations from this one! Thank you, Mr. Schrader and Mr. Hawk and everyone who was helping to make this film reality! This is timeless piece!
Oh my gosh, what an excellent interview talking about Mark Rylance; and the end, when Ethan made the point about “a good movie happens at the end when you’re walking out the theater...” such a good point.
Also, did anyone else think that Ethan looked like Matthew Modine in the clip LSSC played of his new film? I thought so, a bit.
Man, I love interviews like these. The storytelling just grips you. Gives you chills. It was the same feeling I got when Stephen interviewed Ann Dowd a couple months ago.
One of thee best tv interviews I seen, hands down !!
Wow! I’ve been discovering Ethan Hawk today.. for some reason I had always resisted him but now after each interview I admire him more and more. He’s intelligent, funny, knowledgeable guy who seems like a great person as well.
You might not believe me, but it was his intelligence, his empathetic ability to express himself, and his fervor in explaining his characters, that found room in my heart, immediately after beauty, went into the background compared to talent.
We miss you Robin! 😭💝💙💓💔
"A lot of times, the people with the most money have the biggest megaphones, but that doesn't mean that they have the most interesting things to say"
I love that. I'm going to keep that.
He was great in Predestination; one of the best time travel related movies I've seen
First reformed was FANTASTIC. So good.
+100 despite starting with elvis and shakespeare, what he had to say at the end about spirit was thorough.
whats wrong with starting with Elvis and Shakespeare?
Ethan is such a wonderful human being and actor. He’s so genuine, passionate, and well spoken - I always love watching his interviews.
A genuinely good actor and cool guy... Before Trilogy anyone? Real stuff
Ethan Hawke is good people.
Hazel Schofield русский?)
nope, I'm Canadian :)
I love it that Ethan Hawke is as deep as the characters & the movies he played in, esp The Befores.
Hello there. Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far ?
4:35 - 4:39
Ethan was so excited. It was like he was a little kid. Adorable!
Honestly “Good Kill” may be one of the most underrated and eye opening movies of his career and he really doesn’t even say much but the movie will have you really questioning things afterward. It’s one of those movies that somehow nobody saw or ever talks about but is too real in its subject matter and his performance is subtle but stellar if you guys are E hawks fans it is a must see I can’t believe nobody has made one comment about it
He's right on!!! I have learned skills from watching movies! Questions answered, all kinds of things I wasn't able to find anywhere else but, from watching movies! Kudos!
Gattaca is my favourite movie of all times! Nice to see him back in acting
Hello there. Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Where are you from?
Ethan Hawke is the man! 😎
What an amazing storyteller and such moving emotions!
He's absolutely right. A film doesn't need to give answers and people need to understand that
Hello there. Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far?
Aside from his subtle talent and that awesome way he kind of sneaks through "Hollywood", I think Ethan Hawke falls on that list of celebrities that you'd want to invite to a bbq.
It's also true about music, painting, poetry, literature, sculpture, and architecture. Very wonderful way to put it.
Man, the end of that interview is so wonderful!
Ethan always makes cool movies that make you think!
Stephen tried a sloppy joke about enjoying others misery and Ethan just picked it up and hit a home run. 🙌🏻
Highly respect that Hawke shreds the glits/glamour aspect of acting, and focuses on the craft. On being good. It must be difficult to keep that student mentality in such a ego-swelling occupation. He seems almost tormented by his desire to get better. Something I relate to and respect deeply. The fruits of his labor will pay off in new ways as he continues to grow. I have a feeling that Ethan Hawke will redefine his acting career really soon and will catapult himself to a new level. That kind of dedication doesn’t go unanswered.
My favourite interview on Colbert in a while! ❤️
Hello there. Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far ?
I absolutely love Ethan Hawke , I think he’s a brilliant actor and he is so insightful . Yet, he’s so humble. This was an awesome interview!!!! 👍👍 can’t wait to see the movie !

Guys a lesser known movie from ethan hawke is called Before Sunrise. Check it out its amazing and its a 3 part movies known as the before trilogy.
"Oh, Captain, my Captain!" I love that scene. RIP, Robin.
one of the best movies of the last 10 years. I watched it for a second time today and felt my initial love for the movie was reaffirmed.
Great guy, actor, thinker. Just went through the Before trilogy and the more interviews with him I watch the more I like him.
I like this Ethan rather his last guesting. He looked sober but had natural high for his craft. Aye aye Captain!
Thank you for sharing this!
Hello there. Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far ?

Wow amazing
