This was an excellent video. Very thorough and explained in a chronological order. Really helped my understanding of the different focus modes, how to change them and when to do so for the optimum performance. Thank you
As the focus modes are so comprehensive, it definitely is useful to watch this video over and over again. From my own experience, many of the modes are fancy and nice to have. But you don't have to use them. Rather select one that you like and that works for your type of photography and stick with it. Just my thinking. Thanks Michael for putting this video up.
I just want say your voice is very comforting . I have a learning disability and is very important that one who teaches is completely focus on the subject..I am grateful I been learning very slowly but with persistence...Thank you so much....Rosa
Hi Michael, I am that mom, friend that always volunteers to take family, friends and church family life style photos and I love it. After years of only owning kit Canons and kit Nikons I was blessed with the opportunity to buy my very first full frame and I purchased the Sony 7aii. I love it and well I have always loved Sony products, but never imagined I would own a full-frame mirrorless camera. I appreciate your video and hope to learn how to use this camera in manual mode instead of auto mode. Thank you for you videos!!!!! This one particularly has been very helpful.
Simply the best, Michael you've done it again! I love the way you explain, not to long, very easy to follow, excellent illustration. Being a long time shooter on canon and added A7Rii just few days back, it was absolutely easy for me to get to full speed on this new camera after watching this video. Thanks again!
Excellent summary, VERY helpful. I've had the a7R II for a month and read two books (Matsumoto and Busch) that were good starts, but you summarized and demonstrated the essentials of this complex topic in a meaningful and accessible way. I agree with Flashback, "A really great tutorial. Sony should pay you for this:-)".
+Ondrej Bobek e.g. you can shoot the wedding all day long with smaller AF point or field of points and taking pictures of the people with eye detection without changing the area to large. You just need to use native FE lenses from Sony or Zeiss Batis lenses. It works with AF-S, AF-A, AF-C and DMF and even without activating the face/smile detection. I have tested it on my A7rII with FW3.0 and Batis 85mm lens.
Nice video. thanks for the walk through. I just switched to using back button focusing and taking the focus away from the shutter button. I'm using the AF/MF switch setting to do AF and the AEL switch setting to do Eye AF.
Great video! Just one question - How accurate is AF-C on static subject? Will it result in a blurry image because camera is expecting the subject to move?
thanks a lot for your details review. I have a question is that focus system the same in a7ii because it's much cheaper and really good camera it's more than enough 24 megapixle for me . kind regards
Thank you for the tutorial. However, the title also says A7Sii. And for people watching with the A7Sii it can be misleading, as both cameras have some differences in focusing. The A7Rii has some superior focusing capabilities which do not apply to the A7Sii. Also a huge point not mentioned is that whilst the A7Sii was aimed more at video shooters, the A7Rii actually has better continuous focusing in video mode. Which is a strong reason to consider using the A7Rii for video. Thanks, all the best
Hi Michael great video. Have you found a sweet spot while shooting on the 24-70 f4? I'm just trying to find the best way to get consistent and sharp handheld video as I will be traveling without a gamble. thanks for the helpful tutorials
Wow once I clicked on the like button, it changed from 4.9k likes to 5k! 🎉. Yes I just bought a store demo of this camera with 4200 clicks and very good condition! (Can't afford it when it was released 😢) and yes this tutorial is very handy! Thank you!🎉
Great videos you make Michael. I'm just wondering which autofocus mode you found to be the most reliable for moving subjects; the center lock on AF, the lock on AF expandable spot, or continuous focus?
The Best A7rii Review ever. Noone, up to now have explained this in detail. I Will be A7rii + 85mm 1.4 GM owner in 25 Days. Can't wait to have it and start shooting.
Quarker the camera is fantastic. I got it in July and i have 2 lens with it. The Sony 85mm 1.4 GM and the Zeiss Distagon 35mm 1.4. Both of the lenses are perfect match with this camera.
Nice, that 35mm is a beast. I hate that Sony/Zeiss lenses are so expensive, compared to Canon. I just got the A7Rii a couple of days ago too, learning how to use it.
still mode focusing very well explained ,thanks but also pls explain movie mode focusing which has limitations in compare to still mode ,specially auto focus one , i am using sony a99mii bought recently but focusing mechanism not clear ...
First of all, excellent video! Very informative. Second, how did you get the focus options to appear on the lower part of the screen scrolling left to right? On my camera they show up on the left hand side up and down. I prefer your layout. Please let me know how to change this setting, thanks :)
best tutorial on youtube straight forward and I believe Ive watched this 20 times,,,,Thank you for sharing this video!!!!
After watching so many tutorials on focusing, you presented info that made a difference.
One of the best tutorial videos I've seen for the A7rii
Great!
This is missing on the internet, very well organized video. Thanks Michael!

thanks for the great video :)
Thnqq sir ❤️
Thanks
Very good video …..
You dont need set the focus area to largest possible for working with Eye AF (07:27). It works with any focus point setting.
+Ondrej Bobek You are 100% correct. I came here basically to say that setting does NOT have to be set to wide for AF-Eye to work.
I stand corrected. Thanks
Tnx! Perfect review!
Great video! Does it apply to A7s ?
Nice video. thanks for the walk through. I just switched to using back button focusing and taking the focus away from the shutter button. I'm using the AF/MF switch setting to do AF and the AEL switch setting to do Eye AF.
+Logan Boyd Thats a good one!
+Logan Boyd Did the same thing. The Center button is too far and awkward.
Great video Michael thanks. Do you have anything on the 'phase detect' Should this be on or off?
Fantastic instruction, thank you! I've just become an A7SII user :)
Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!! I switched from Canon to the Sony A7Rii and it is so frustrating!
Great video! Just one question - How accurate is AF-C on static subject? Will it result in a blurry image because camera is expecting the subject to move?
great video

This is great!
very very detailed and good explained. Could u walk us through the entire menu. Maybe in different video parts?
This is great. Thank you.
Can you do a photo shooting comparisons between the 2 of them as well ?
Thank you for the tutorial. However, the title also says A7Sii. And for people watching with the A7Sii it can be misleading, as both cameras have some differences in focusing. Hi Michael great video. Have you found a sweet spot while shooting on the 24-70 f4? I'm just trying to find the best way to get consistent and sharp handheld video as I will be traveling without a gamble. thanks for the helpful tutorials
Is there a distinct downside to shooting still subjects in continuous focus?
Wow once I clicked on the like button, it changed from 4.9k likes to 5k! 🎉.

Great videos you make Michael.
I'm just wondering which autofocus mode you found to be the most reliable for moving subjects; the center lock on AF, the lock on AF expandable spot, or continuous focus?
Is it the same focus system on A7ii? I guess not?
You should have also covered back button focussing and the best way to change flexible AF point while shooting.
The Best A7rii Review ever. Noone, up to now have explained this in detail. I Will be A7rii + 85mm 1.4 GM owner in 25 Days. Can't wait to have it and start shooting.
Leonardo B So, how's the camera?

What are your focus mode recommendations for shooting groups of 4-7 and groups of 10+? Thanks!
Great video! How would the eye detection work in video mode, I assume you wouldn't need to hold down the centre button?!
You would use face detection
+MichaelTheMentor Yeah I knew that one was feasible but wondered if eye detection also applied. Cheers for the quick reply Michael.
which lens you´re using on this video? thanks!
First of all, excellent video! Very informative. Second, how did you get the focus options to appear on the lower part of the screen scrolling left to right? On my camera they show up on the left hand side up and down. I prefer your layout.
Please let me know how to change this setting, thanks :)
+Tony Thepsouvanh Try pushing C2 (custom 2) button and then use your wheel to see the modes at the bottom.
