Couple notes on this, because I simplified things for the purpose of the video and to not get even more confusing.
Bottom line is - BUY THE BLACK BOX THAT SAYS 4K HDR. Anything else isn’t “true 4K”, it’s just a 4K master downscale and compressed to fit on a Blu-ray Disc.
    - A 100% uncompressed movie would be a monster file. Terabytes. But the 4K discs are much less compressed than Blu-ray.
    - There are some differences between Blu-ray and 4K discs at a much deeper technical level. Beyond what most people need to know or care to know. So I didn’t dive deep there for the purpose of a simple explanation.
    - 4K is H265 compression and Blu-ray is H264. It’s a different type of compression. Taking a 4K master goes from 8 million pixels to 2 million pixels. Basically compressing the pixels down/downscaling. To me, those are sort of interchangeable terms.
    - 1080p Blu-ray players cannot read the larger disc types so that is why they can’t play 4K discs. And yes there are deeper technical differences as well.
    - As far as I can tell, you can put a 4K file (if it’s small enough) on a Blu-ray disc. You’d still need a 4K player to play that back in 4K because a regular Blu-ray player won’t support it.
Hope that helps! I tried to keep it simple enough for anyone to understand, but if you want to take a deep dive there are much smarter people than myself who can really get into the nitty gritty details of the discs.

Keeping it simple and providing inaccurate or incorrect descriptions are not the same thing, you can keep things at a novice level without confusing it more by using wrong language. You are conflating resolution and compression for one, hdr meta data isn't a significant increase in file size compared to other aspects of the fish for two, and others. Your comment doesn't really excuse lack of accuracy in the video for the sake of simplicity, especially when the point of the video is to educate.

About this "Buy the black box that says 4k HDR":
It doesn't just say "4k HDR" on the box. Sometimes there's an HDR sticker at the front, sometimes it mentions HDR only at the back, HDR can be HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Visions or a combination of those three. Besides, even though most of the boxes are black, not all of them are. I've got one myself that's completely white with only the name of the movie in blue at the front.
If you want to be 100% sure you're buying a real 4k disc, just remember what the 4k UltraHD logo looks like and try to find it somewhere on the box. If it's somewhere at the front, back or spine of the box, it's a real 4k release. If you can't find the logo anywhere, it's just a regular Blu-ray.

Antimonkat HDR does increase data size. And I’m talking about downscaling - that to me is compression. You’re compressing the pixels included from 8 million to 2 million. You’re downscaling. How’s that different? Maybe it’s just me using what I think are interchangeable terms

  • @TimTringleJr

Correction: 4K UHD encodes are still compressed. You state more than once that on 4K it’s uncompressed which is just not true. Uncompressed video is WAY larger then the 80 or 90 GB UHD encodes, H265 is just more efficient and compresses the same quality at a much smaller file size. Which is why 4K becomes possible at only twice the space as a maxed BD disc.

I guess the bonus is that there are no official 1080p's of True Lies and The Abyss so the 4k's with the added HDR will be the way to go anyhow. Fingers crossed he dosent apply any DNR. I love your enthusiasm Jeff, you remind me of me back when I started collecting LaserDiscs and learning about movie restoration and video mastering.
I have to agree with some of the previous comments though, the explanation is a bit inaccurate...
    1. You can't hpothetically put 4k Ultra video on a BluRay disc and play it back on a standard Bluray player, the 4K video isn't compatible with BluRay players due to incompatible: compression codec, video resolution, colour spectrum, etc.
    2. While Arrow may have a 4K master of Robocop they can only decide to release it on 4k Ultra BluRay if the rights agreement they negotiated with MGM permits it, they may only have the rights to release it on Blu-Ray.
    The simplest explanation is:
A movie that's been mastered in 4K on Bluray is simply a 4K master that's been downresed to 1080p for BluRay.
The studios have been using 'Mastered in 4K' on BluRay packaging as a marketing gimic, possibly trying to mislead consumers into believing they're getting a true 4K video presentation.
Assuming the same film source and the same mastering equipment are used, there would be very little difference between:
    - a movie that's been downresed to 1080p from a 4k scan
    Vs.
    - a movie that's been scanned natively at 1080p
The main reason a Mastered in 4k BluRay looks better than a previous Mastered in 1080p BluRay is that the 4k master was created 5-10+ years after the 1080p master, using vastly improved mastering technology/techniques and they've probably maximized the movie's bitrate favoring image quality over supplemental features.
    It's not a fair comparison.

Correction to your correction. Standard Blu-ray is 2K, not 1K. 4K is 4 times the resolution of 2K because twice as many pixels vertically and twice as many horizontally equals 4 times as many.

  • @MrOffthecliff
    @MrOffthecliff 4 года назад +7

Wow... this is SHOCKINGLY inaccurate. The difference between true 4K discs and 4k mastered Blu-rays have NOTHING to with being compressed or not. Blu-rays are typically compressed with essentially h.264 compression while 4K Blu-rays are compressed with h.265, which is just a newer, more efficient method of compression. The difference is actually ALL about the resolution. 4K masters are typically 3840x2160 (that’s 3840 pixels wide by 2160 pixels high) and for a 4k Blu-ray that full resolution can be retained. For standard Blu-ray... that 3840x2160 4K master has to have it’s resolution (not its data rate) reduced because the maximum picture resolution for HD is 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high. For every 4 pixels in the 4k master, those have to be combined into 1 pixel for the HD (Blu-ray) master. So for every 4 pixels of detail in 4K you only get 1 pixel in HD. This is further complicated by the fact that most modern-ish movies were finished at a resolution just above HD (in 2K) and then those masters are UPCONVERTED to 4K ( so every pixel is split into 4 using upconversion algorithms). But the bitrate or compression have ZERO to do with this. In fact, you could very easily fit a true 4K film on a 50GB standard Blu-ray (and even a 25GB one). Most iTunes and VUDU 4K file sizes are well under 25GB for a standard film.

I have seen files on my Android Box that have Bluray in the name so I always thought they were the best quality but you said the Ultra High Definition 4K is better with the 50+ GBs of data. I have seen these large files on the Box (not too often) and now I know they are the true 4K streams! Thanks again, I am learning!

I like your channel because you're not trying to BS anyone. There are a lot of people out there with wild imaginations that would tell you they can clearly see a drastic difference between the Dr. Stangelove 4k and the Criterion blu ray. The fact is its a subtle quality difference if the the blu ray was well done. To top that, the laws of nature can't be broken, if a viewer doesn't have a large enough TV, the human eye can't process the microscopic differences.

Well every disc is compressed. The only thing that isn’t compressed is actual film from a camera. The 4k disc is the least compressed way to watch a film. Blu-ray is way more compressed than 4K but 4k still need to compress the image from the true film/ camera to store it on the disc.

Studios have been doing 4K and 8K film restorations for awhile (Ridley Scott Mastered Blade Runner Final Cut in 4K and 8K shots for VFX for example). Studio masters get distributed for a different master for a home format. They are not "compressing" 4K to 2K (or 1080P), instead they are rescaled (sampling pixels down). "Compression" is a different term referring to how the movie's bitrate is shrunken to save file space. You're also in error that a blu-ray holds up to 25GB: it is a format that was introduced to have multiple layers. It's also an older format, so movies are compressed in: h.264. A 4K movie requires more space because it not only has 4x the resolution, but HDR, and 7.1 core audio for Atmos or DTS:X. So in order to fit this extra info, a new codec was used: h.265. Standard BD can also be made with 4 layer 100GB capability. The difference between the two is software formats. UHD resolution, HDR, and Atmos or DTS:X are newer formats that are incompatible with older blu-ray formats. Blu-ray is an older format made for 1080P consumer standards: because of the differences in software format, blu-ray is an older standard that's incompatible with these new video and audio format. Also, the studio master is larger than the compression used for home distribution....a cinema 2K intermediate is much larger than 100GB, for example, because it's uncompressed layers of video and VFX, in a higher color depth. You claim that studios were upscaling DVDs, but again, studios have different masters than the home distribution. I know, for example, the marketing for the Star Trek set said that STIIWOK had a restoration, and the others a remaster. The uninformed internet was saying, "see these other movies are up-converted DVDs". The reality was that the other movies were taken from earlier 1080i telecines made for HDTV.

Blu Ray looks like I’m watching on a high end tv. 4K version looks like I’m watching through my window. Also some 4K releases are what is commonly know as “fake 4K” while others are truer 4K transfers. Fake 4K typically use a 2k intermediary creating more compression than would otherwise be seen on a proper 4K transfer.

James Lee, resolution wise, yes I agree that 1080p looks very close. It’s HDR that pushes 4K UHD ahead imo. HDR implementation will determine how much better a particular movie looks on UHD vs Bluray. Some are hardly better at all and others are significantly better.

Depending on the factors surrounding the source material, there are actually 2k upconverts on 4k Blu-ray that look better than native 4k releases. There is no guarantee that a native 4k title will look better than a 2k file upconverted to 4k. It just depends. However, they can both look much better than regular Blu-ray unless the studio has majorly botched the transfer and/or mastering. Thankfully, there are just a few titles that are very disappointing on 4k Blu-ray.

Most modern films are usually mastered at 2K due to time constraints with CG and post-production, but there are some good recent films that are at a native 4K picture like Joker or Power Rangers. For old films just assume they're 4K but for newer ones I'd do a google search.

Just wanted to add. The compression algorithm matters as well. A UHD bluray will use h.265, where a regular bluray will use h. 264. A DVD will use mpeg2. H.265 has less compression than h264. H264 will have less than dvd. A UHD disk upscaled or not "should" look better than a bluray because of less compression.

If you watch streamed 4k content on a projector and large screen you see the fragile, low bitrate compression really fall apart. Most content only has up to 4k of image detail anyway, until you get into 65mm epics of yesteryear and filmed IMAX documentary releases.

This seems rather long-winded and partly incorrect. A "4K Remaster" means the studio reassembled the project using modern, higher quality processes (ie: 4k scans of original film) and that the disc you hold in your hand was created using that higher quality source material. However, to fit this new 4K master onto a standard blu-ray disc means it has to be down-scaled and highly compressed to fit the rigid specifications of the blu-ray disc format, which doesn't allow 4K. No amount of "remaster bragging" on the packaging is going to mean your bog-standard blu-ray disc contains a 4K film. Blu-ray is 1080p. That 1080p blu-ray will look as good as it can within the confines of that format. That's all the 4K remastered source offers -- a better source to create copies from. Even a modern VHS release could say "from a 4K remastered source" and it'd be true. But a VHS tape and player don't support 4K, so, like the blu-ray copy, the 4K master would have to be shrunken down and go through a number of other awful steps before existing as a relic of the 20th century. The 4K source would assure that the VHS copy looked as good as possible, but ultimately it's just VHS in 480i with 3:2 pulldown... not a magic 4K UltraHD VHS.
In short, "from a 4K master" means "we have a really great master copy of this movie, and we've crammed it onto this consumer disc according to the disc and player's specifications. Important note: Only discs that display the 4K UltraHD logo contain a 4K copy of the film. Sorry for the confusion. Look for the logo to know what you're getting. Blu-ray is 1080p, 4K UltraHD is 2160p. The stuff we write back here is meant to sell you on our product, even if it is misleading. Again, sorry."

Thank you! I was just going to say the same thing. Bluray is 1080p. It doesn't matter what resolution the source material is, if you buy it on bluray it can only be 1080p. Even if your bluray player upscales, or you play it on a 4K bluray player, you are jusy getting a 1080p picture (upscaled). For true 4k you have to use a 4k UHD disk on a 4K UHD player (on a 4K TV)

Wish studios were honest with their packaging, in terms of movies that are truly mastered in 4K DI and released on 4K Blu Ray, vs mastered in 2K DI and still released in 4K Blu Ray. Aside from the resolution, HDR really makes a huge difference with most titles, with the bonus if it is truly mastered in 4K.
For movies mastered in 2K, in my opinion, there is no reason why it can't be released on standard Blu Ray with HDR?? I think the storage on a standard 50GB Blu Ray would suffice for added HDR encoding for those native 2K releases. Just a thought.

I elected to preorder the Criterion release of Parasite even though it is not 4K. Hopefully I can grab a 4K copy cheap eventually.

I figured it meant we made a 4K transfer ready for ultra HD and then transcoded res to 1920 x 1080p, not compressed

People are daft - basically top picture quality will be in black box stating 4K, everything else in the blue box the quality won't be as good!!!

The question for Criterion is: How much compression do their movies undergo since they typically have so much extra content on the same disc?

There used to be a website devoted to true 4K and fake 4k releases called realorfake4k.com. When it was online, it could be determined that many 4K HDR releases were in fact just 2K to 4K upscales. The website went offline in fall of 2018, but there are snapshots available on the Way Back Machine.

between the video and the discussion below, I learned something. Not sure that the best answer is but I will not be buying a straight 4K-Blu-ray player if I even buy another one. I am really starting to feel like I might as well just stream. The ONLY place I can rent movies is Red Box and has anyone noticed how slowly they are getting new releases nowadays? I went in last week and looked, and they still had the movie I had rented on March 7th listed on the first page of recent releases. On top of this, was looking at disc players recently and good ones cost way too much and Samsung has just dumped the market. The ONLY thing I could find out there that was affordable were the LG's. I really have my doubts about the whole section of this industry. There seem to be no perfect answers.

For me personally, 4K UHD discs are not worth it. I have a home cinema with a 4K projector(Optoma UHD51) and a 4K bluray player(Panasonic DP-UB450K). I have tested both the 4K UHD and blu-ray version on several movies. My blu-ray player does a great job upscaling my normal blu-ray discs to 4K. That means I can't see a difference in quality. HDR is of course another subejct, but my projector is not good enough to handle that and that seems for most projectors actually..

I will say though Blu Ray and 4K UHD Blu Ray can coexist. Some films don’t lend themselves to the 4K UHD format and 1080 is just fine. But, for me 65/70mm films are prime for 4K UHD Blu Ray. We have Lawrence, 2001, now Patton or Sound Of Music need to come out.

If transferred and mastered correctly, ALL films will benefit from UHD Blu-ray disc releases. You are limiting yourself unnecessarily. Jaws is on UHD Blu-ray and it looks great. 35mm. A League of Their Own was released on UHD Blu-ray and it looks amazing. 35mm.
