La Fenice o.lv. Jean Tubéry & Vox Luminis o.l.v. Lionel Meunier
    Henry Purcell: King Arthur
Opname 31 augustus 2015 tijdens Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht in TivoliVredenburg / recorded the 31th of August 2015, during Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht.

J'aime.
I regret that I cannot put one million like. It is a summit of baroccous music, joyous, triumphant, full of majesty.
    I love without measure.
Bravissimo to Purcell, Jean Tubéry, the orchestra and the choir.

Absolutely spectacular. For those of us who have found a lifelong joy & inspiration in Purcell's genius, this is a near-incomparable performance of his early opera. Not only do we hear the unique sound of (some) authentic instruments, the thoroughly modern singers somehow manage to convey a similar "authentic" sound in their voices, perfectly integrated. Interesting, too (per Mr. Elgersma's note) that he, countertenor, is listed as "alto;" just as Purcell seems to have called himself. Evan the videography, unknown as it was to Purcell & his audience, seems perfectly expressive & "authentic," giving deserved focus on these superb players. Thanks to all.

It is now very interesting to hold this "recording" against the more recent one with Paul Paul McCreesh and Gabrieli, also stunningn and now CD of the Year (2020) of the BBC Music Magazin.
Each of the two has particular merits !

You are right, astonishingly enoug, civilization goes on, by means of Henry Purcell, Antonio Caldara and Claudio Monteverdi, and some others. It helps to requalify some of the ongoing. Monetverdi's son died of plague, but he continued to compose.

@@stefanspeyer8126 We hope our current plague proves to be less severe. And, 'some others:' Giovanni Palestrina, Orlando di Lasso... Humbling to think one may have sung a few measures of these artists in boyhood choirs. All these fine new performances sustain & ennoble our species.

My favorite performance of Henry Purcell's King Arthur. Please, Maestros Jean Tubéry & Lionel Meunier, put this on a Blu-Ray with lossless surround sound! -- I have heard many good performances of this piece, including recordings by Christie, Gardiner and Harnoncourt, and your performance captivates me like no other. Sophie Junker is fantastic and this piece is made for her - this would make Purcell very happy indeed. I can't stop watching it... It has been hours... I thing I need help ;)))

I'm English, but the French do it best! I love the enthusiasm as well as the professionalism of M. Tubery and his group. Purcell comes to life with them; not a trace of stodge here. Wish they'd make more recordings of this composer.

In many ways Purcell's music was made for French performance techniques. He drew influence from various sources, English folk music, English church music, and most pertinent to this discussion, the French style of the age.

    HENRY PURCELL
    { LONDRES 1659~1695 LONDRES }
    « VOX LUMINIS / LA FENICE ~ HENRY PURCELL ~ KING ARTHUR {Z.628} {1691} «

Their English accent, even when speaking, is very convincing. Actually, I have a doubt, where are they from?

I'd expect Tomas Kral to be Polish or Czech, Zsuzsi Tóth Hungarian and Robert Buckland British... and, on this evidence, Helen Cassano too.

Excellent playing, good interpretation and a good understanding of Purcell's idiom. This is not often the case with French groups, though I note that few of the musicians are French!

Don't think much of the version of The Cold Song here. Not a patch on Andreas Scholl and Klaus Nomi.
